- dxgg, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Awful opening paragraph. Who has time to get to the farmer’s market? Er...the same time it takes to go to the grocery store?
- buckchoris, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4I'm a herbivore.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3I really doubt it's cheaper to hire a gardener than to just buy the ***** at a supermarket.
- buckchoris, on 07/24/2008, -2/+4I poop in my garden regularly it makes for good fertilizer for plants .
- alexs5, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I don't think the article's arguing that- I think it's more about taste and keeping things organic.
- gn0stik, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Uhhh, human poop is not good for gardens. Any kind of carnivore/omnivore poop is bad, really. It might make the plants grow, but the food you grow will make you sick.
- beauley, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Most of us have at one time or other visited grandma's house to partake in her newly harvested tomatoes, or even freshly picked onions in the quaint back yard garden patch. You knew they were fresh because the garden soil had to be washed off those that were dug up.

Grow a Garden, Harvest Truly Fresh Vegetables - cleverhanz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Locavore is a horrible collection of letters, please do not treat it as a word. It doesn't even rise to the level of wanker Latin.
- gn0stik, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Ok, I'm going to spell this out for you, nice and slow. It has NOTHING to do with what you eat, but what KIND of animal you are. Just because you are a vegetarian, does NOT mean you are an herbivore. The bacteria in your stomach, and the length of your intestines, and lack of multiple stomachs for further processing, the Acids in your single stomach, etc, are the obvious differences. You see, TRUE herbivores are built to handle high amounts of fiber, and gain as much nutrition as possible from plants. Omnivores and Carnivores are not. Our digestive systems don't need to be, because of the amount of energy, and protein in MEAT. Therefore, the byproducts are FAR dirtier than they are in herbivores. All kinds of nasty bacteria, and acids.
There are ways to process your own ***** to make it suitable for garden fertilizer, but you said that you literally just poop in your garden.
So, stop ***** in your garden, and for god's sake don't invite anyone over for dinner. Or... do whatever, eat your crap food, but you will get sick. - dannystaple, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1You can buy a 99p chicken in some supermarkets, but I doubt it will taste as good as a hand reared one. Imagine a chicken without brittle bones, with good non-fatty meat.
I grow my own food, and while it really wont cut much into the supermarket bill, eating a tomato fresh from the vine, that was never chilled or stored for weeks, is really different. For a start - it may still be naturally warm. - rntrent, on 06/29/2009, -0/+0Plant Containers:
While it seems some what lazy to hire a gardener just so you can have local produce, I also think it sounds like a great idea. Local produce, and the vegetables grown in ones back yard tend to be a lot fresher. However, sometimes its hard to be able to grow your own because of busy schedules. So if you have the money, and want fresher food, I say why not.
