- donte, on 05/02/2008, -0/+42Boo frick'n hoo. You know, some of us are actually forced to pay for our own transportation. Sounds like some people forgot that they were elected to represent a district of citizens, not to throw a tantrum when they don't get all the perks they thought they were entitled.
- KingRat6, on 05/02/2008, -0/+39Arnold got rid of his Hummer when he started his environmental initiative. Considering he was the guy who convinced AM General to make the civilian specs in the first place, you have to admire the man for giving it up.
- elliott9, on 05/02/2008, -0/+38I don't know why they wouldn't be happy, just buy it with their own personal money like the rest of us!
- cheezintern, on 05/02/2008, -2/+35Silly idea, but shouldn't lawmakers be leading by example to begin with.
- SemiSarcastic, on 05/02/2008, -3/+29"This is outrageous! Soon we'll all have to use $50 bills to light our cigars instead of $100s!"
- deff, on 05/02/2008, -0/+26They need to give up on more things. They don't need vehicles that are paid for the by the tax-payers. Its grotesque what they get handed to them.
- SilverBlade2k, on 05/02/2008, -0/+24If they're gonna 'talk the talk'..they better 'walk the walk'..
- Kenzan, on 05/02/2008, -0/+21"But he's heard grumbling from colleagues.
"They want their Lexuses and their Cadillacs," he said"
This really burns me up.
They are public servants, They need to set an example to the rest of us in every way.
I think they need a slap in the butt to wake them up to the reality of exactly who works for who. - jwoelmer2, on 05/02/2008, -1/+19'bout time
- trizzlelv, on 05/02/2008, -0/+16Rep. Alcee L. Hastings (D-Fla.), who said he chose an Infiniti M45 because it is suited for the high speeds on Interstate 95, which runs through his district, said that safety is his top concern. "If you don't have some giddyup, you're in a lot of trouble," he said.
"I really would prefer to be driving a tank."
This tremendous article highlights the continued neglect and indifference to us, the taxpayers and voters, and the rest of the world. I hate politicians. Why do they even get a free ***** car? I don't get a free car for producing radio commercials all day. This is sickening. - mickaloha, on 05/02/2008, -0/+16He could still buy many other smaller cars that get good mileage that are still American made. Buy a Ford Escape. It is an American made hybrid. It appears he just wants to justify his big ass SUV that he doesn't really need.
- uhhNo, on 05/02/2008, -0/+16The price of a Ford Expedition (2008) is $46,499 to $57,299... wtf is he driving this thing for anyway... if it was his own money i wouldn't care, but it is the tax-payers money that is buying this beast...
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+16Give the man a bicycle
- peterandbeer, on 05/02/2008, -0/+15Finally they don't get the special treatment that theyve gotten for years
- alexf, on 05/02/2008, -0/+15If it was their own car, it would be one thing, but they are leasing these cars with taxpayer money. Kudos to the democrats on this one.
- Charun, on 05/02/2008, -0/+15One man's perk is another man's entitlement. Even more so with politicians.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -0/+12Arnold commutes from Santa Barbara to Sacramento everyday in his PRIVATE JET. DO YOU HEAR ME? HE COMMUTES TO SACRAMENTO EVERYDAY IN HIS ***** PRIVATE JET.
- sakurama, on 05/02/2008, -0/+11It's that attitude of, "it's someone elses job to worry about the enviroment" that got us here in the first place. Now let's tighten industrial emissions, reinstate minimum milage requirements on all cars and raise the gas tax to fund further development of alternatives. It's not until it really hurts (or we're paying what Europe is) that anyone will get off their fat asses (hey try walking!) and actually do something about it.
- InnerRayg, on 05/02/2008, -0/+11If this was about buying their own cars I would be against it, but as the cars are supplied by tax-payer money I'd prefer the cheapest and most economical variety available.
I wish I had the money for a car like that-gas is killing me. - proliance, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9What the hell are we paying them for? They need to buy their own damn cars and pay for their own gas. Then maybe they'll understand why we're upset about high gas prices.
- papastout, on 05/02/2008, -1/+10Taxpayer funded Tesla Roadsters for all of Congress!!!
- dchaffin, on 05/02/2008, -1/+10I'm not as worried about the environment as I am about politicians who apparently don't even know what's in bills they're passing.
- NoxAeternus, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9"I will start driving a green car once Pelosi starts ballooning back and forth from coast to coast to save jet fuel" Is there a need for them to be flying back and forth across the country? Can't the politicians "jetpool" or set up some elaborate video conferencing for congressional meetings?
- Zandarrr, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9Lead by example.
- amida, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9"Rep. Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley likes his taxpayer-funded Ford Expedition. He isn't worried that it's not the most fuel-efficient car. It's reliable, suits his mountainous district and is cheaper to lease than many other vehicles." Simi VALLEY. "Mountainous." I always knew Gallegly was an ass. (And yes, I've been to Simi Valley.)
- digitalarcanum, on 05/02/2008, -0/+8not to mention Toyota is doing more to bring jobs here to the US while american auto manufacturers are doing all they can do consolidate and send jobs overseas as it is. talk about bitchin' about nothing.. any sort of economic growth here in the US, whether it be money to an american manufacturer or a foreign manufacturer that came to the US is a good thing.
- Konformitee, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7My God, are you dense? How the hell is he supposed to get around town during those massive southern California snowstorms in a Ford Escape? It's probably only two wheel drive!
- theNazz, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7If these government employees cannot accept their own new rules, they know where the ***** door is.
- deff, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6No way in hell. They don't need a $100k car.
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6they sitll get it, they just dont get as much. Remember governments are there to serve the people, not the other way around.
- budgetguitar, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6The city next door (Thousand Oaks) is more mountainous than Simi Valley and all T.O. has are lazy rolling hills.
I'm beginning to see ol' Elton as being an asshat too. - AngeloM3, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6You would think since the taxpayers are paying for it... that the taxpayers voice would be heard on a topic like this........
Oh thats right... we're in the US, our word doesn't mean *****! - contezmc, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5I have a four-year University degree. I hold down two jobs and live in an area where the only grocery stores are several miles away AND uphill. It's still snowing here.
A vehicle is too expensive for me to afford. I ride a bike to get around.
It's funny that out of all the ***** that's taking place in this country politically, this is the biggest load.
***** you, members of Congress. All of you. - digitalarcanum, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5we should make lawmakers drive around in aveos and priuses.
- Iztikeit, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5I love a government that doesn't keep excess in check. Recessions are about the only things left to keep politicians in check when it comes to budgeting.
- uhhNo, on 05/02/2008, -1/+5The price of a Ford Expedition (2008) is $46,499 to $57,299... wtf is he driving this thing for anyway... if it was his own money i wouldn't care, but it is the tax-payers money that is buying this beast...
source: http://ford.ca/main/default.asp?Language=en§io ... - TidusX, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4I was thinking the same, there are several American made hybrids the only problem is then he would give you the excuse that it doesn't properly represent the typical American.
- InnerRayg, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4I think the point is that if law-makers want us to change, they have to be willing to do the same.
- JulyZerg, on 05/02/2008, -2/+6I laugh at the people with trucks where I live. There's no reason for one! Especially those ones where they've decided to get an extra set of tires.
Honestly. Some people need to give it up... - PopcornDave, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4Maybe Alcee should get a Yugo, a GPS and stick to the back roads if he's worried about being blown off the road.
- insanebrain, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4GOOD FOR YOU !
- goffy59, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4I hate this government. Why the ***** do you people stand by and let them take more then a big nice car. They shouldn't be getting *****. They should use the money we give them to buy their own ***** *****. Back when politicians had jobs, they had to vote for the right thing because it would effect them. Now we can't trust them because they might use their vote to better themselves. But what can you do in a corrupt government like this. This is the right step in the right direction. We need to take more pensions away.
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4california is credited with leading the way against global warming/climate change, guess its true afterall.
- itchie, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4Please cut the government fat ASAP!
Years of abuse and overspending is part of the reason why we are in financial trouble. - budgetguitar, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3Then you know there is no 'mountainous terrain' in Simi Valley to warrant having any special vehicle like a ford explorer. You can get around that town just fine in a prius Elton. It's all pretty much flat. C'mon Elton, you don't need to lie to keep your SUV.
- neil1492, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3I say that if they don't want to lease a fuel efficient car we shouldn't be paying for it.
- carlosglz, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Representative Gallegly, there is a high mpg suv made by an American company it's called a Foooord Escaaaape Hyyyybriiiid:
http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/escapehybrid/inde ... - AngeloM3, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3unLEADed by example
- heystoopid, on 05/02/2008, -3/+6All political waste of space pond scum like him should be forced to drive around cheapest and smallest sub compact that money can buy , then that be justice done !
- NWVG, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3I live in Simi Valley, and I can tell you that we are about as mountainous as any other modern city. I.E. There are freeways everywhere as well as paved so there's no need to go off-roading as Gallegly seems to state. While he is a crazy conservative a lot of the time he was quite responsive to us when we were fighting the raising fees that the music industry was trying to make Pandora pay.
