- Maynza, on 04/23/2009, -2/+36I thought this was going to be some site selling old gadgets for cheap :/
I don't really get what this is supposed to accomplish. Why not just tell people to recycle their old gadgets instead of just saying "keep it forever"? - kevinkace, on 04/23/2009, -0/+13Recycling == consumption. There is no way to recycle with a net of 0.
1. Reduce
2. Reuse
3. Recycle
In that order! - blueice2511, on 04/23/2009, -1/+14Why did they need to make a brand new website for this?
- K4Lic0, on 04/23/2009, -1/+10I also thought this was going to be a site where I could order last gen electronics for cheap. But it looks like this submission is just trying to get blog traffic. Buried.
- TriplePlay2425, on 04/23/2009, -0/+9Yeah, I don't see what the point is. I mean, I guess to spread the word that there's no need to go out and buy new stuff when we have current stuff, but I was expecting the site to have some substance or point to it rather than an idea that is summed up in one sentence, and having nothing more. It's nothing more than a paragraph, some testimonials, and a basic comment system.
Sorry, I don't see the point of this being worthy of front page material. - foofoobee, on 04/23/2009, -1/+10Isn't it my patriotic duty to be a mindless consumer?
- Dotcommer, on 04/23/2009, -0/+8Every time I make a call, I throw my phone away and get a new one. I don't want to use an old phone to make a call. It has to be a fresh, virgin phone for every call I make. Because my friends and family are worth it.
- solracarevir, on 04/23/2009, -0/+8I do the same, My cellphone is 2 years old, same for my laptop.
- browwiw, on 04/23/2009, -0/+8 I saw the article and was hoping it would be a guide on how to get deals on last year's models of gadgets. It's just a website for normally affluent white-people patting themselves on the back for doing what lower income folks have been doing forever.
You know why my NES still works like the day I bought it? Because I was a poor kid and had to make that ***** last! - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+6It's just self-congratulatory masturbation. "Hey, remember that thing I bought? Well I'm using it!"
- azureskies88, on 04/23/2009, -0/+6Ditto. I was excited until I realized it was just anti-consumerist *****. Had my wallet out and everything.
- shaunlow, on 04/23/2009, -1/+6i hate my new touch screen it always pocket dials then I get calls back from people asking why I called them
- rubberfactory, on 04/23/2009, -1/+6these comments suck.
this website sucks. - 0260, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4I got a 500MB hard drive hooked up. Megabytes. it's from 1994.
- K4Lic0, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4My touchscreen phone does the same thing. And it DOES have a way to lock the keypad, i'm sure 'shaunlow's phone does as well.
- ffoofighter2001, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3I don't typically throw technology out...I sell it on eBay or pass it on to family or friends.
- TrouserJazz, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3Last year's model? Lame. You should be getting at least five years out of your electronic goods with an upgrade here and a new battery there.
- CrunkPooch, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2http://faroutshirts.com/images/DieInAFire-Preview. ...
- TheSuperunknown, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I love to go with older but capable equipment. I see no reason to go for the latest and greatest when last year's high-end costs the same as this year's low-end.
Off the top of my head, some of the "old" stuff I use regularly (Not all necessarily high end but well within my demands):
Photo - Canon 30D, Canon XT, Sigma 24-60/2.8, and a parade of adapted manual lenses from the 60's on
Audio - iRiver H120, SanDisk Sansa e280, Etymotic ER6i's
Phone - Motorola Razr v3xx
PC - Pentium 4 Prescott-based desktop
Paintball - 2k2 Timmy - ModernTenshi, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I like the concept. I don't get people who just throw out old gadgets and tech items when they can easily be repurposed, either for yourself or for others.
I was using a couple old laptops as Linux boxes to learn on them and store items on, until one just broke down and I spilled soda in another. Should my parents decide to get a new computer at some point, I plan on taking the one they have now (which is an old machine of mine anyway) and making it into a dedicated media server, possibly even a DVR. I upgraded phones twice in 6 months, and rather than just store them or throw them out, I gave one to my sister and the other to my mom, with the intent of giving my current iPhone (1st gen) to my dad if I upgrade to the upcoming model that's rumored to be coming out.
Even if I didn't use them, I'd look to donate them to a local program that could use them for something, or find SOMEONE who could use it. - azureskies88, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I tend to do both. I'm not wasteful - I am typically a power user of any new technology I adopt. At the same time, I hold onto old technology and can always find a use for it, in its original form/use or otherwise. It's a smart idea - but I could never get behind all this anti-consumerist nonsense.
- Khast, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I can't even count the obsolete machines in my house which still get much use.
Everything from old video game consoles (NES~PS2)
to computers (486SX/20 ~ P4HT 2.8GHz) ...come to think of it, I have an 8088 Amstrad kicking around as well..but not in use.
Hell, I still have and use my old 8MB flash cards.
Yes, I have been dubbed the King of Obsolete machines by most of my friends. But hey, they work, and function as they were designed. - Duffle, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2"I have the Digital Rebel XTi, it's 8MP, I really don't need anything better"
Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com.
Shame he's wrong, it's 10MP. I have one. My 1D II is 8MP though. (He probably means the XT) - DiggzDE, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I just bought a new laptop and a new blackberry.
But I balance it by still using my old laptop and my old cellphone as well.
Or is that worse for the planet? - Frostek, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1To be fair, it does look they used some old cardboard to make it...
- anildash, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1That's awesome... it's exactly that kind of thinking that was the reason that I wanted to build the site! :)
- pikelet, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I just hold on to *everything*. This week I cleaned out all the old mobile phones in the house (the children's hospital is doing an appeal, they take old phones and exchange them for money with a scrap company) and packed them off to a good future. Phones hold almost no value, which was the reason I never got around to selling them. Other old things get sold to finance the new shiny thing, when I get around to wanting it. The general rule is to hold on to the just replaced device for a backup, and sell/donate anything older.
I'm thinking I miiiiiight treat myself to a new iPod...mine's not broken, just low in capacity, and my mum wants a new one (she has a shuffle, she has now mastered it and feels ready for one with a screen). So I might buy myself a new one, hide it away so she doesn't suspect anything, then wipe mine and put all her favourite music on it for her :) Another way to repurpose gadgets! - FredFredrickson, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Try telling that to all the rabid iPhone users who upgrade every year.
- Khast, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Funny, but I hear there are people who can actually use an abacus faster than a calculator.
- RoboDonut, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Hotter than cold, colder than tepid.
- Technopundit, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Glad I never updated my abacus. Still has the original beads!
- olivetwist, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1i buy old laptops ($100) and put a small version of linux (wattos) on them and use them as netbooks. my grandmother uses one for her email and browser. perfect use.
- knobbysideup, on 04/23/2009, -0/+0buried for being a site to masturbate over what you've already done. So what? I was hoping to find some cool old gadgets to buy/trade.
- homercles337, on 04/23/2009, -2/+2I didnt see anything about what to do with an old socket 939 setup (4400+ X2, 8800GT, etc). I built it ~3.5 years ago, upgraded when needed, and by this time next week i should be running my new X58 socket 1366 build. HTPC for the socket 939? The machine has over 1.75 TB of HD space (over 6 HDs). However, that just doesnt seem right given that my new machine will have 3 TB to start with. Wrong thread?
- JasonHaley, on 04/23/2009, -3/+3"It's also cool to put some thought into what we buy, and what we throw away."
????
Define "cool." - MattVarney, on 04/23/2009, -1/+1Even my own clam style phone from 5 or 6 years ago had a way to lock the keypad. I would think your phone would have the same.
- BayerMedia, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0I'm resurrecting my 1989 SAAB 900 SPG [again], (having done so with an engine and transmission overhaul in March of 2000, total cost was $9200); now with a badly needed paint job, miscellaneous minor mechanical work and interior renovation, but all with a twist: making it more fuel efficient. It now has more than 250K miles on it (don't know for sure because the ODO broke years ago).
On average, I have gotten about 21 MPG under average conditions over the years. A couple of years ago, I began experimenting with water injection, and in it's present form, I get about a 10 percent increase in fuel mileage, just by spraying water into the inlet air duct downstream of the throttle valve. You can see my blog about my experiences at http://H2OSaab.com . Another fuel saving tweak I have yet to do anything with is add an HHO system. I will be blogging that at http://HHOSaab.com.
I figured my last renovation cost me $85 per month over the past 9 years. Even if you amortized it over 3 years, it would be a principal payment of only about $240 or so. That's a heck of a lot better than a new car alternative. All in all, it has only left me on the side of the road twice since I've had it (once just recently when the fuel computer took a dump). The present renovation should cost me less than $3000, so if it even lasts another 5 years, I'll be doing even better. - antoniuk, on 04/23/2009, -4/+3And we wonder how much is this website using in resources to serve pages? Irony strikes again!
- GraceHead, on 04/23/2009, -2/+1Kevin Rose contributed a tidbit on the right column ...
"I have the Digital Rebel XTi, it's 8MP, I really don't need anything better"
~Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com. - zakangelle, on 04/23/2009, -3/+2Dugg for Costello reference.
- cheddaro, on 04/23/2009, -1/+0I just bought a 2008 model Sony car stereo. Plays USB drives, and has aux out. Which is all I care about.
Not because I'm environmentally conscious, but because it was $85 new, on Amazon. - negoki, on 04/23/2009, -1/+0this should be *****.com
- azureskies88, on 04/23/2009, -3/+1I have found that an anti-consumerist mentality is far more mindless than its consumerist counterpart.
- Yanwoo, on 04/23/2009, -6/+1I normally operate in the opposite mode...
- tyjami, on 04/23/2009, -5/+0My first gen iPod Touch is just as good as new.
