- skteoievtehr, on 07/23/2008, -18/+40Fina-*****-ly. This is something that should've happened years ago. The amount of disposable ***** that we use daily is ridiculous. It's sad that our culture is so shallow and greedy and obsessed with convenience that it can't use something like a bag or a fork more than ONCE, meanwhile there are people in other parts of the world who use the same bowl for every meal and may not always have food to put in it.
- vault, on 07/23/2008, -0/+19If this thing passes you're (believe it or not) going to have to pay 25 cents for a paper bag. The point is to get people to bring their own bags...
- sleze, on 07/24/2008, -2/+21What on earth does the LA plastic bag ban have to do with John McCain?? Why not just have a picture of the star wars kid?
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -2/+18whysee -
You have to bring your own bag! Paper bags are no better. - Gav0510, on 07/24/2008, -4/+19I dont want to rely on the rest of humanity when I know a lot of them are dicks anyway.
- freshyill, on 07/24/2008, -14/+28Yeah, and let them decide for themselves if they want to use asbestos and lead paint while we're at it.
Sorry, but we know these things are a hazard today. They're filling up landfills and killing animals in the ocean. Some things are too important to be left up to people. It's irresponsible to let the problems they cause continue to get worse while we wait for people to buy a couple of 99¢ reusable bags when we know about the effects now. They need to go away as soon as possible. - storyFX, on 07/23/2008, -5/+19who said paper? bring your own reusable bag that lasts for years.
http://www.reusablebags.com/store/shopping-sets-c- ... - spyd3rweb, on 07/24/2008, -7/+19I reuse both paper and plastic bags as trash/recycling bags, so now I have to go buy trash bags anyways? That sure solved a lot. Stupid half brained hippy/ecofascists.
- overtoke, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11Don't be stupid.
- WhoDoneIt, on 07/24/2008, -2/+11Trees are a renewable resource, don't forget that.
- headband, on 07/24/2008, -2/+11if I lived in LA I would bring my own plastic bags just to make them angry
- Aliwalla, on 07/24/2008, -2/+9This is a repost, so i'll repost my comment: South Africa did this in 2003.
- adith, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8Plastic bags are the least of LA's environmental troubles.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -4/+11Yeah, let's save on 1 plastic bag,
WHILE WE DUMP SOME TONES OF GASOLINE ON A CAR. - MacEnvy, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6You're full of *****. I've used the same 3 reusable bags for over a year and I've never had to wash them. What are you buying, orange juice without a carton?
- darny, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6I haven't heard 'paper or plastic' in about 25 years. I've just been given plastic.
But seriously...like fuzzlog said...I use the plastic bags I get from the grocery to line my household garbage cans (and to clean my cat's litterbox). I usually take canvas to the grocery store and get more plastic when I need it. Are we supposed to be buying glad can liners now instead of reusing the ones from the grocery now? I don't think outlawing is the answer. - Kanten, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Because it fetched a random pic from the site.
- freshyill, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6They're not great due to the energy and trees that go into making them, but at least they're fully biodegradable.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -3/+9I don't know why you got buried for such a decent comment, so +1 from me.
- MrIso, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5you took a 7 hour shower?
- GRANDPAMUNSTER, on 06/11/2009, -3/+8I bought reusable canvas bags a few years ago, they're great. They hold more stuff and they are stronger. You just have to remember to bring them with you. Sometimes change is a good thing.
- JasonCox, on 07/24/2008, -3/+8Screw you guys, I'm going (to take the cart) home.
- CressCrowbits, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Dugg for the monetary conversion.
- quaunaut, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6Yes, because I'd like to pay $35 for some bags.
Just go to a Trader Joes if you have one nearby, they sell their own permanent bags for about $2 each, if they don't come free with a full bag of groceries(this was how it was when I got mine, at least). - WhoDoneIt, on 07/24/2008, -3/+8Here in BC, Canada that is, I get asked EVERY time whether I would like plastic or paper when I'm shopping for few items. I say plastic. I can't tell you the amount of times I get a dirty look from the wannabe "David Suzuki" behind the counter.
I then tell her she is more than welcome to pick up my dogs ***** with a paper bag. Sorry, I require plastic. I have 3 dogs and I need that durability.
I am all for saving the planet. I bring hemp re-useable bags EVERY time I grocery shop. However I use plastic bags to pick up after my "children" - thyarcher, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5What if that store is called Sam's Club? They don't have bags either. You either bring your own bag or rubbermaid, or just throw it all in the back of your car to sort out later.
- fuzzlog, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6What will I use now to pick up my dog's poop? Hmm lemme guess, dog poop plastic baggies that I have to buy for that specific use.
- BNash577, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5I think the point he's trying to make is that some people do reuse these things. I know that plastic bags are very useful when it comes to picking up and throwing away cat dookie too.
- libertao, on 07/24/2008, -3/+7Here's why not:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_common ... - MrFurious2k, on 07/24/2008, -2/+6Yet another win for the nanny state.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4I'm glad I don't live in LA. I make only one major grocery shopping trip a month, spending about $250 and getting 25+ plastic bags worth of groceries. All of the plastic bags go into a container and are re-used as small garbage liners.
This law would force me to either carry 30 resusable bags around the store once a month, or more likely, force me to make more trips a month, using more gas. - KaiUno, on 07/24/2008, -5/+9Most of our supermarkets here in Belgium have stopped giving away plastic bags completely. The disposable kind anyway. Paper was never an option here. You can still buy a shopping bag at the checkout, but it'll cost you €1 or more. (That's like $521 and 31 cents.)
It takes a bit of preparation, is all. Once you've got a house stacked with these sturdy shopping bags, you'll start to remember to bring one to the store. It's gradual, but it works. - moogle516, on 07/24/2008, -2/+5Really ? I used to be a bagger and its much easier to bag in a plastic bag then a paper bag, more so when a douche asks for double paper bag.
- bolomkxxviii, on 07/24/2008, -4/+7Oh boy, this will certainly save the planet. The bags are made to degrade and in my area there are collection bins right in front of the stores so people can drop off used bags on their next trip. If you really want to save the environment, quit reproducing!
- peestandingup, on 07/24/2008, -5/+8Right, just like we let everyone decide which cars to drive & then the streets got riddled with SUVs driven by people who don't need them. Which effects us all negatively.
People are smart. The public is dumb. - Origin415, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Taking any other drivers out with them?
- arjie, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4ricksite: I think he means biodegradable reusable bags? My mom uses a couple of jute bags when she shops for groceries.
- dstz, on 07/24/2008, -2/+5And 1000 other things that are also worse than plastic bags, like living in a suburbia, having a lawn where it is not natural (water and pesticides,) etc... but anyway, it won't happen here so I'm okay with that decision!
'the animals in the oceans"
they've got tons of more pressing problems than plastic bags don't they (over-fishing, global warming, acidification of the oceans...) - ricksite, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Why did you get dugg down? Maybe people expect you to pick up dog poo with a reusable bag.
- MacEnvy, on 07/24/2008, -2/+5Don't worry Timmy, you get all of those tax dollars back when we here in NY have to send FEMA to rescue your sorry flooded asses every hurricane season.
And you don't pay a ***** dime for the air travel of the governor of CA. - eviltandem, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3So America should aspire to the level of Somalia?
You act as though there is a shortage of plastic, or landfills. We have plenty of both. What about bottled water? Not just the bottle, but all the waste incurred in packing and shipping something that is literally piped into every single building in the country. THAT is wasteful. Making me carry around my own fork on the off chance I might decide to eat something is kind of silly to my mind when you have things like bottled water going on.
Banning plastic bags, but keeping the 8 mi/gallon Hummers? Bottled water shipping? Burning coal to make electricity? There are so many, much worse, things we are doing to the environment. This is just a complete non-issue compared to some of the really harmful things we are doing.
That's what I hate about the green movement. They get the weirdest things in their head, but never actually attack issues that might actually make a difference. They don't want strip mining or burning coal, but they refuse to accept nuclear power. They don't want plastic bags, but they chug water that is the most wasteful thing possible... hippies.... - Rotzooi, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Seems kinerry is used to filling up on bulk *****.
- ekday, on 07/24/2008, -4/+7We've got a store being built that only allows reusable bags. They have no paper OR plastic bags at the checkout.
- fuscius, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Something's not right here. I'm all for cleaning up the earth, but this doesn't seem practical.
So I buy shopping bags (which aren't cheap by the way), but how many do I buy? I guess I would need a bunch if I ever plan on doing a lot of shopping, right?
What about the spontaneous shopping that stores thrive on? Most customers end up buying more than they intend to before walking into a store. It's good for the economy. Now that's hindered because I didn't bring enough bags for that extra stuff I would have bought. Can you imagine the sneers from fellow customers when you ask for bags because you're too good to buy reusable shopping bags?
Most people throw out plastic bags which is irresponsible. If LA wanted to act on this, they should have just banned throwing away plastic bags. Many cities already ban recyclables from being throw away. - Origin415, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3What the heck do you buy with your bags?
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -2/+4Just another reason that the Socialist Republic of Mexifornia sucks ass.
- Origin415, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2The problem is people don't. You are fully welcome to, but most people don't, and thats the problem.
- Saad85, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2you are more right than most people would think. my family is originally from pakistan, where (like china) there's a LOT of people and a large amount of them are poor. people there use plastic bags for everything because it's cheap, but due to the 1800's mentality of "throw it over there, it'll be gone by next week" there's plastic everywhere and it looks horrid. I know that north american cities are smart enough to keep most of that ***** out of sight (landfill) but until you actually see how many 2 billion is, you cannot understand.
the best solution is to use those large re-usable hemp, fabric, or plastic bags that last years instead of one trip. the paper bags, unlike what the plastic manufacturers think, do not have a free pass. they are there as an emergency backup if you forget to bring your own or didnt bring enough - Hosalabad, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2San Francisco already did it, why will it take L.A. two more years?
- marx2k, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2"This law would force me to either carry 30 resusable bags around the store once a month"
