- aerospacemonkey, on 12/02/2008, -2/+58Abolutely; I'm sick of work!
- replaysMike, on 12/02/2008, -0/+27Damn straight - "I can't come into work today. The EPA says so."
- xmaschimp, on 12/02/2008, -2/+26I wouldn't be surprised if my office -- as much if not more so than my work itself -- is getting me sick. Above and beyond all the funky stuff that old buildings are made of, being in a small office all day long is like being crammed in an airplane...
- xBobx, on 12/02/2008, -1/+13With flu season quickly rearing it's ugly head, it's good to focus on the numerous factors that effect your health; including Sick Building Syndrome. Starting with a healthy work environment is the first line of defense against other viruses and germs that can effect your health.
- murrdpirate, on 12/03/2008, -0/+11I'm an HVAC engineer and I feel like I gotta defend my industry a bit here. Notice the lack of actual evidence that workplace air quality is a threat. Most states and many countries follow the international building code...you can't get a permit without your drawings approved. Even before LEED, air quality has been probably the most important thing to code officials. Historically, code required a HUGE amount of outside air coming in (and corresponding amount of exhaust air going out), it has since come down but is still more than is actually inhaled. It is also filtered, which will at least remove some pollen and other larger contaminants.
Until you consider bacteria and viruses (which office buildings don't stop but hospitals do), the air quality should actually be better than being outside. The fact is that in most cases it is simply more expensive to install viral-grade filters rather than just tell sick employees to stay home. If employees are coming in sick anyway, wash your hands. You aren't going to filter the air between you and someone else in a nearby cubical anyway, and for that matter, you aren't going to filter the air between you and people you see outside. You're much much more likely to get sick from someone you are physically near rather than by someone you are on opposite side of a filter from.
So to sum up: safe but not sterile. - arielh85, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9I used to work in an office that made me sneeze 5 times an hour...always creeped me out a little bit thinking about the mold, chemicals in the workspace.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9I work from home... so no... but... I guess that still indoors too... so yes... but I don't mind as much.
- wefarrell, on 12/03/2008, -0/+9I used to work indoors all day and I hated it. That's why I'm a sea captain now so its no longer work that's killing me but my addiction to digg.
- Ajajadude, on 12/03/2008, -0/+9Yeah, well, I work at a drug store. It's next to impossible to not be in contact with sick people, especially this time of year.
- jennen2, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9How is this... worked for a government travel agency 3 years ago and got sick from chemicals that someone put down near my desk, everyone in the whole department sick but I'm the only one to go home under a doctors care. OSHA ... well we know how that turned out... I lost my job.
- nyeus, on 12/03/2008, -0/+7I had no idea you could get a maritime internet connection. They measure your bandwidth in knots instead of kilobytes?
Bad joke I'm sorry :( - hbyrne, on 12/03/2008, -0/+7This piece really was relevant today, as our office was sealed up tight, and a group of painters started spray painting the adjacent office, nearly suffocating several of us. The building manager came up later to assure us it wasn't really paint - just sealer!
- santiago1, on 12/03/2008, -0/+7 I don't know so much about work, as I actually enjoy it, but that ***** commute to get there and back is kicking my ass.....
- SACubeMonkey, on 12/03/2008, -0/+6I was on vacation all last week, came in on Monday, and had to stay home sick all today. Recirculated air sucks.
- hbyrne, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7The simple answer is, yes.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+6What does it mean if thinking of going to work makes you sick?
- emt1451, on 12/03/2008, -0/+6I work at a hospital, so, yes.
- BluesFan, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5Yes, that's why I call in sick!
- normalkid0615, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5GO HOME!! you need a break
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5stay out of software development. ;)
- vertimber, on 12/02/2008, -1/+6I didn't feel the need to read this one, YES, YES, YES.
- akchrs, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6My office has a window..... that opens!! I am God like to most of you.
- Codename, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5It should be more like, Is working making you sick of going to work?
- WriterSD, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5So true about an office being like an airplane. It's no surprise people can get sick so easily.
- houndeyex, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6If you were the boss, you'd have someone else breathing down your neck about productivity.
- jflaker, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4Most office building air handling units will move air from one part of the building and deposit that air possibly on the opposite side of the building. There is a phenomenon call sick building syndrome where colds and other sicknesses spread like wildfire.
What really ticks me off is someone coming in to work sick who COULD HAVE stayed home because they have sick days, and getting ME SICK and I DON'T have sick days.
If I were da boss........I'd be sending people home if there is a slight possibility of them being ill....No sense in one person coming in because they feel obligated and then knocking out half my staff later in the week! - MorganMghee, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5aside from all of the things we all encounter at a variety of workplaces, those carrying large quantities of products from china really concern me. i really want to see an air quality test from inside walmart!
- BadAndy1967, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4More like the people at work make me sick!
- genepooldesign, on 12/03/2008, -1/+5Oh come on! As if lazy-ass people need another excuse not to go to work. Pffft.
- RajAtWork, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4I would defiinitely say - I am allergic to work
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4I am sitting in my office where I have not left for the last 26 hours. So yes, I believe that being at work is probably making me sick.
- SemiSarcastic, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4I might make me sick, but I really need the money.
- C4Aries, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4HA! Suckers! Im Blue Collar baby! I work outside in a a rail yard! All I have to worry about is diesel fumes, tank cars leaking toxic chemicals, and derailments! Wait... aww... Can I work in an office?
- rheaume, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3More than you know...
- stuffradio, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3Same, I'm a freelancer and make all my money from home. I can set my own hours, and I don't think I could stand working at most places.
- naugrim, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3"Is going to work making you sick?" • Well I work at a hospital, so the short answer is = yes :p
Next question.... - normalkid0615, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3solution - extension cord - work outside.
- TrueSecrets, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3Pretty sure my school has mold, considering it was made in the 30's and they haven't done much of anything to the main building where I have several classes since then.
It's a rare day when this kid with asthma doesn't have to use his inhaler. - honeybrass, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3and I'm sure that made you feel so much better.
- DiggFellow, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3I read a study that said Indoor Air Quality was up to 100x's more polluted than the air outside- even in the cities that are high up on the "Most Polluted" list.
- LOGNATR, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Oh, I thought this was an article about Hardee's...
- honeybrass, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2I will build a completely enclosed temple, with ducted air-con, in your honor.
- erichh, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2
Also, what isn't mentioned in the article are the building occupants. They can add to the "toxic soup" by using synthetically scented products. As in hair products, perfumes, body lotions, laundry detergent, fabric softeners, dryer sheets. Think these aren't a problem? Just google the toxic effects of any of them and educate yourself. - fangs4evrything, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2"Indoor environments are often contaminated with pollutants sourced from allergens from outside air or indoor materials, chemicals such as radon, and moisture such as mold."
Mold is a moisture??? - EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2I work in cube land in a hospital, I'm so screwed.
- jtbndy, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2I sneeze at least 3x more during work that I do at home. I believe the article.
- Barr08, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2My cube has a whole wall that is open. The view of the indian dude that sits next to me is absolutely stellar...
- spiritflare1, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2work doesn't make me sick, but my boss does.
- inajeep, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Out of the dozen or more company / buildings I've worked in over the years, only one did any type of air quality testing. It was a pharmaceutical company.
- normalkid0615, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2I switched from Software Engineering to Business. Now I write basic VB code for Excel files for the Training Department in HR. Smart move?
