Irony: Paul McCartney Flies in Hybrid Car Instead of by Ship
aol.com.au — The former Beatle has long been an outspoken advocate of environmental causes and animal rights. He is a vegetarian who won't even wear leather shoes. But now he's being criticized for having a hybrid Japanese car flown to him in Britain rather than having it sent by ship. The car in question is an 81,000 pound (US$158,000) Lexus LS 600h ...

- spiggot123, on 05/15/2008, -12/+3pretty cool
- Stroggoth, on 05/15/2008, -2/+3The 600h is a big fat heavy luxury car, where the hybrid mostly improves acceleration. There is nothing environmentally friendly about that car anyway, so fly it in on whatever you want.
- choopie911, on 05/15/2008, -2/+5You don't understand the point of a hybrid, or how it works I guess.
- Y0tsuya, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5Actually I think you're the one who don't understand.
- choopie911, on 05/15/2008, -2/+5You don't understand the point of a hybrid, or how it works I guess.
- sdsoloist, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4But in improving its acceleration with the hybrid system, it is more efficient than doing the same by using a bigger engine. Compare the BMW 760li to the Lexus LS600h - they both make 438 hp, but the BMW gets 13/20 MPG while the Lexus gets 20/22.
- Stroggoth, on 05/15/2008, -2/+3The 600h is a big fat heavy luxury car, where the hybrid mostly improves acceleration. There is nothing environmentally friendly about that car anyway, so fly it in on whatever you want.
- m00n1, on 05/15/2008, -0/+69"He" is not being criticised. The article says it was very likely organised by Lexus, not by Paul. Buried for being inaccurate.
- ToadLeg, on 05/15/2008, -1/+9This article is *****. I just heard about it and it was Paul himself who had a problem with it when he found out about it. The article says:
"But environmentalists quickly pointed out that the use of a cargo plane to deliver the car to England completely offset any environmental gains resulting from the car's use."
What "environmentalists"? Paul McCartney himself? This is the same kind of anti-environmentalist crap as the "Al Gore lives in a nice house so his message is meaningless" nonsense - they're trying to spin it as if Paul did something and people are calling him out on it, to say "An environmentalist did not support environmentalism so you shouldn't either". Indeed, buried as inaccurate.- OisinT, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2That's true. I read in the newspaper yesterday that he was furious that the plane wasn't shipped by water. This lexus is being used as his limo so he didn't need it right away anyway.
- tomee, on 05/15/2008, -3/+2The LS600h consumes more fuel than for example a Nissan Micra anyway, so what the hell? The LS600h is just a damn good car, and I would want to have it delivered as quickly as possible.
- koft, on 05/15/2008, -3/+4The environmentalists need to chill out and thank Paul for sponsoring a green car.
- zombies187, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Its really the enemies of environmentalists who love these kind of stories. They call every environmentalist who doesn't live in a tree a hypocrite. They pretend they would listen to logic if it came from someone who was consistent, but really anyone who is both green enough and consistent is labeled insane.
- ToadLeg, on 05/15/2008, -1/+9This article is *****. I just heard about it and it was Paul himself who had a problem with it when he found out about it. The article says:
- headzoo, on 05/15/2008, -1/+113I think that title needs to be rethought. I was pictuing McCartney flying through the air in a hybrid car.
- 9bpm9, on 05/15/2008, -0/+18That was the only reason I came here - flying cars.
- Dumbledorito, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7I was picturing the same thing, but in the style of the movie "Yellow Submarine."
- Protoss, on 05/15/2008, -0/+15Seriously, I had to read the description to figure out how the ***** Paul McCartney flew inside a hybrid car.

- eliburford, on 05/15/2008, -2/+20Not caring too much.
- imightbewrong, on 05/15/2008, -2/+24Why does it matter? The plane was going to fly either way and the boat was going to travel either way. He's trying to do the right thing. It's petty and stupid to criticize him for this
- Stroggoth, on 05/15/2008, -5/+4How is he trying to do the right things? By buying a 400 horsepower luxury sedan that HAPPENS to have hybrid system??
Please.- Papajohn56, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5nice job reading the article, it was a gift from lexus for his recent tour.
- choopie911, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Read the article Stroggoth.
- cdigioia, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2It takes much more energy to transport the car via plane than via ship. I don't really care, but that's what people are pointing out, especially given the distance covered.
- alittleroy101, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Good job, Columbo.
- Y0tsuya, on 05/15/2008, -2/+6If the plane is going to fly either way, why are airlines resorting to reduced in-flight meals to save weight? In short, more weight = more fuel consumption.
- bjornski, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5The money saved by cutting out meals far outweighs the money saved by increasing fuel consumption by reducing the weight of the food.
If you seriously think they're cutting back on food so they get better mileage, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.- DrJack, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6About that bridge, would you be sending it by plane or by ship?

- dstz, on 05/15/2008, -11/+4What a load of *****. The only thing to care about environement is to off oneself. Because we're ***** human and we live from the environment, it's how things are, and all those bono and mc cartney etc are really good musicians but laughingly poor environmentalists. Do anyone thinks that Al Gore or Paul M Cartney have globally good carbon output (that is, negative) ? of course ***** not one second. And not wearing leather shoes, ahah, what a full load of crap that those "ecologist" try to shove down our throat.
- alittleroy101, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Toadleq predicted this almost exact comment. Ha.
- bicyclethief, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7Why does it have to be a perfect environmentalist or nothing at all? What's wrong with doing what you can? You have to start somewhere.
- dstz, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2A rock star not wearing leather shoes is like a moronic president who stops playing golf. I was digged down when i said that about president Bush, i'm digged down when i say it about Mc Cartney. I don't care if i'm not Olberman and can't say the truth and be listened, but i very simply call ***** where i see it. You don't "start somewhere" by not wearing leather shoes or stopping playing golf when you have had such responsibilities. It's taking people for morons and buying yourself a conscience. Not that there's anything new in buying oneself an conscience, that's basically what made money for monasteries.
- dstz, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2People seem grossly unaware of mixed messages, of mercantilism, of what we eveolved monkeys are programmed to do. They seem to live in a fantasy land where going to the top doesn't involve sometime doing a whole lot of *****, and ALWAYS co-opting the global status quo. There's nothing more unnerving that those ecologists who travel the world with 100 person strong filming crew and who go all moralizing on us.
The way we human use resources is most definitional, words are worthless and people often say the contrary to what they do. It's humanity for you.- dstz, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2And when Radiohead did not go for an interview in the USA by plane, people here on Digg called ***** on them, calling them elitists. Elistist! I'm not a fan of Radiohead at all, but THEY where right on that point. The only way to be a real ecologist is mostly to NOT DO THINGS, and there nothing they could say in an interview that would offset flying through the world, because people don't listen to moralists. They just follow the long tail of economy and technology as we all do.

- makkaveli19, on 05/15/2008, -2/+9haha, that lexus gets less than 20mpg.
- morcheeba, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6You're right! The EPA estimates are 25 mpg city/28 mpg hwy and the NY Times got 19 mpg during their review. The 0-60 time isn't amazing -- 6 seconds. A non-hybrid BMW 330i gets better milage and matches its acceleration.. and has the same size trunk!

- centerblack, on 05/15/2008, -1/+4Who cares? The fact that it's a hybrid doesn't mean anything unless you're driving in stop/go traffic or in a city where your speed is below 25mph and you're starting and stopping a lot.
My 1984 BMW 325e got 35 mpg highway...- OisinT, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3I think that's the point. It's being used as a limo in London.

- ivantalboys, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2The L600 is a rival for the 7 series of BMW not the 3 series and 6 second 0-60 times is very respectable for that size of car.

- choopie911, on 05/15/2008, -2/+4The BMW 330i still burns fuel while driving in town. A hybrid doesn't, that being the entire point of them.

- fdiskit, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2The real question is - with all that money going into producing what, 300 of these tops, they couldn't make it a DIESEL/WVO hybrid is beyond me.
- sr71atomica, on 05/15/2008, -2/+0Macca should be grateful that Toyota expedited his car to him. Heaven knows, if some luxury automaker like Toyota (the parent of Lexus) were to offer me a car, hybrid or otherwise, then ship that via air, I would be grateful, and then say thank you. There is an old expression that comes to mind: Never look a gift horse in the mouth.
Sir Paul could certainly stand to appreciate that phrase. After all, considering the promotion he had done for that vehicle, why WOULDN'T Toyota go to that extra expense?
Then again maybe Macca is sticking to his plebean roots, and trying to be more of a commoner in this case. Mel Gibson had a great corollary, as Porter in the movie, Payback: Always be grateful for what you get.
So if Sir Paul is upset about this, maybe it is his shock, or at least surprise, showing through. Don't worry Paul, there are PLENTY of trees to absorb the extra carbon dioxide generated by shipping that vehicle via air. Just enjoy your new ride and be grateful someone cares enough about you to ship something like that in appreciation for your efforts. - mlagana, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2wow news week a little slow? /***** article
