- londubh, on 06/24/2008, -1/+7Vertical wind turbines cannot by capture as much energy as horizontal wind turbines. It's physically impossible. At best the most efficient vertical can capture 50% of what a horizontal turbine can. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_turbine VAWT's are good for some applications and can be cost effective, but they are not the most efficient type.

If there was one country in the world who could benefit from not using oil it would be Israel. Germany has left Israel in the dust on solar and they don't have the sunlight Israel does. Israel has the expertise and national will to lead the world in alternative energy if they put their mind to it.

Also, power output from a wind turbine/mill/generator is generally proportional to the wind speed cubed, so while it's nice if the turbine starts working at 2 m/s rather than 3 m/s, but all else being equal, the turbine that's working at 4 m/s is going to make more power than one at 2 m/s plus one at 3 m/s. (Granted, it's unlikely that all else will be equal.)
In short, it's nice that the turbine works at lower speeds, but it's what happens at higher wind speeds that really matters. It would be a waste of money to deploy turbines in places where the wind was always only 2 m/s -- go find a place where the wind averages 5-10 m/s instead. - dougmc, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2But there is a picture of the turbine itself, sort of. It's likely that whatever changes he's made are evolutionary rather than revolutionary, so what's likely is that he's just refined the design somewhat to make it less draggy, perhaps only at lower speeds. Oy Windside of Finland has a vertical-axis turbine w/ a 1.5 m/s cut in! and these look a lot better too.

- engityra, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1Agreed. I just finished a course in renewable energy; horizontal axis wind turbines with three blades are the most efficient. One of the main reason vertical axis turbines are not as good because they are so low to the ground where there isn't as much wind.
