- Tsooris13, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Awesome. More competition, lower prices. Hopefully I'll be able to afford a solar roof within a few years.
- Craga89, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Man, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning...
Solar is much better for both us and the environment than fossil fuels. Big companies investing in solar means more advances, and better efficiency ratings in the future. Plus they become more affordable for the rest of us who'd like to save a little money on our bills in the long term. - rdoger6424, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4but if companies invest in solar panels and mass-produce them, the cost of the panels will drop very nicely.
- chmoder, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3YAY! This can only lead to competition between current competitors; making higher efficiency and lower cost solar! THANK YOU Intel and IBM for joining!
- directive0, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I know some people who dislike the concept of alternative energy for fear of being labeled a "dirty hippy". I always find it laughable to take such a view, especially when these same people pay far out the ass for gas for their cars. Incidentally they are usually the ones who when confronted with an awkward silence during small talk will begin discussing the aggravation of the rising cost of oil. All I can do is chuckle.
- rdoger6424, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2You're talking about the stupidity of solar energy... and then you mention ANWR.
- Jexie, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Unbelievable I came across your post being dugg down, there must be a mailing list oil exec's are receiving already with some call to action on this article....who else could be afraid of competition and the prospect of affordable solar power.
- buckw1lde, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2What an ignorant comment from Stallionism. Do you have anything better to suggest? No, you just bitch. Apparently all you learned from your science classes is how to say ***** that makes you sound like an idiot. Perhaps you should have taken an economics class and you would have learned that many new technologies start off expensive and inefficient. It's their adoption by big corporations, like Intel and IBM, that lead to breakthroughs in innovation, efficiency and ultimately, lower prices as the product is rolled out to the mass market.
- Hunkadoodle, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Was I the only one who read the headline and thought about geeks actually going outside and getting some color in their pale, pale faces?
- yoda17, on 06/17/2008, -0/+16-12% efficiency (for current technology) translates to ~10-15m^2/horsepower with peak lighting (noon at the equator).
- angrylinuxgeek, on 06/17/2008, -2/+3Go Big Blue!
- Nintendesert, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1So do we have a replacement for Indium yet or will we see all this solar progress grind to a halt in 10 years when the stuff runs out?
- gamalicious, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I think the important thing is that the big boys are joining the fray. The more eyes on the problem, the better it's going to get.
Also, as much as people tout that solar cells are much more expensive than other energy sources (oh hell yeah they are), once you recoup costs, you just pay for maintenance. - beauley, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1With Global Warming on many people's minds, do we have any ideas of the best way to lessen the impact on our future, or maybe a possible relief of its possible ravages or even a possible key to its eventual reversal. Many scientific experts have proposed

Solar Power, Source of Endless Energy - inactive, on 06/17/2008, -7/+1Buried because solar panels are just another fad that is pushed by ignorant people. It will die out when people pay $5000 to install a huge solar panel on their house that doesn't supply any decent amount of power.
You go intel. Market your green asses to the ignorant moron hippies that never took a science course in their life.
