- terracottapai, on 06/03/2008, -0/+15$1 million says this never gets off the ground.
All of this ***** gets announced and then the company goes under, so I'll believe it when I can order it. - Fratz, on 06/03/2008, -0/+14I like innovation as much as the next guy, but this seems like a horrible, horrible idea. And did you catch this? "initially only offered in Asian markets." I'm guessing that "Asian markets" may mean "China" and that they want to see how many people it kills and all the ways it fails before trying to sell it in more regulated markets.
- redcolumbine, on 06/02/2008, -0/+11Cute. Weird. Doesn't look safe, but interesting!
- smartcause, on 06/03/2008, -2/+12There's a reason airbags go *inside* the car...get rear-ended by a car that isn't another inflatable car and your car pops faster than a birthday balloon that lands on a lit birthday cake. If you live in a country with vehicle safety laws, you will sooner see a cold-fusion powered car for sale than this death-trap-on-wheels.
- Chaarazu, on 06/03/2008, -0/+7This takes bumper cars to a whole new level of awesome.
- Enderplayer1, on 06/03/2008, -0/+6At least they came to there senses and realized it was way better than their Vista version.
- sotose, on 06/03/2008, -2/+8But you can get a block of steel that pops out of the steering wheel in case of a crash as an optional.
- FishHammer, on 06/03/2008, -0/+6I hope it does a better job staying inflated than my air mattress. Otherwise I'm going to have an inflatable electric car that's 90% covered in duct tape.
- Barackalypse, on 06/03/2008, -0/+6Why does every single electric car need a gimmick besides being electric? Can't someone just toss an efficient gasoline engine and 25kW of batteries into a slightly modified Honda Accord body and be done with it? Must every electric car be doomed to be an electric trike or inflatable deathtrap?
- kenvsryu, on 06/03/2008, -1/+6Great idea. Easier to manufacture and lighter than current materials.
- AngelBunny, on 06/03/2008, -0/+5not safe at all. this is why it is aiming for places like china because it would never past safety here.
- AngelBunny, on 06/03/2008, -0/+5wow there is so many things I could say. here is a few to try on for size: troll, racist, ignorant, stupid, propaganda, advertisement, wrong, drone, tool, moron, ....
- moocow1452, on 06/03/2008, -0/+5What if we used Helium?
- ChileanGoD, on 06/03/2008, -0/+5It has and opening on the floor, in front of the seats, so you can use the highly ecologically efficient Flintstones propulsion technology.
- AussieFox, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4Shut up, keep your US politics to political threads.
Some of us don't want to hear about it anymore - idiggitall, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4Hi Boss, sorry I'm late, I got stuck in a 100 car bumper car match.
- chicoer2001, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4does it come with an inflatable doll for the passenger seat?
- cl2yp71c, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4Interesting.
But I wouldn't want to be in a ballon upon impact with an H2 Hummer. - theNazz, on 06/02/2008, -1/+4I'll take one out for a test drive as soon as it's available in the US. I withhold judgement until I actaully see and test it. Cool idea.
- Dougman82, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3The idea seems really cool, but what about when you drive into a heavy thunderstorm? Does it blow off the road in the wind? Does it hydroplane at the touch of water?
- inactive, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3$1 million says this is what the "start up" is looking to pocket before folding up the tent and moving on with its paper mache passenger jet.
- mrblaack, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3"aw crap! honey the car blew away again!"
- stix213, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2I'd hate to get a "flat" in that thing.
- eliot2000, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Call me when there's a prototype. The render and claims from the article seem a little shoddy.
- GlassAgate, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Obama is not (for the millionth time) a Muslim.
- CJ117, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2You wouldn't? I see many, many fun ramp-related incidents in the future of this new car.
Smash into other cars and not worry about damaging them? Can you say bumper-car-day at the office? - ChileanGoD, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Will it explode?
- inactive, on 06/03/2008, -1/+3I'm building a car made of this -----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef12rb0oHEA
- eternal464, on 06/03/2008, -1/+3it has a little better technology than that. Sounds like they are using a lot of the same ideas as the Mars mission. And as for your pop theory, the bumper is probably compartmentalized, so not only will it not pop the whole car but probably remain largely intact.
Granted the car will be light compared to steel, but so is your mom, and thats saying something. - sanman, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2So just pass a law requiring all other vehicles to be inflatable too, and you're set.
You might also save a lot of pedestrians' lives.
MADD won't have anything to be mad about anymore, tho... - fooljoe, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1I wish I could digg your comment 10x. All this does is reinforce the idea that all EVs are either quasi-futuristic gimmicks or golf carts. In fact, cars like the Toyota Rav4 EV are almost indistinguishable from regular cars and could meet the needs of 90% of drivers with decade old battery technology. Only problem is automakers refuse to produce them and politicians are too spineless to force them. http://evnut.com/rav.htm
- Kreigster, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Great idea until the wind pushes you into oncoming traffic .If it works they should make a amphibious version.
- catalysis, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2I guess the author should have mentioned that the frame and other parts will be made out of carbon fiber and aluminum. It would have eliminated about 95% of the dumb comments and questions in this thread.
- Twenty, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Well, that, and America isn't really, y'know, open to new ideas. We're still driving around the same boxes we did 60 years ago...
- cl2yp71c, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Well that's if everyone converts to this balloony car.
Having a metal cage would be cheating! - Brian48216, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2I know a lot of comments say it's unsafe, but considering this is the same technology that was used to land rovers on Mars, we're talking about drops that make scientists clench their butt cheeks like none other with instruments that are some of the most finicky things on earth, I'd imagine you could stick a human in it and not worry too terribly much.
- Lane, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1So what happens when you run over a nail and it pops your tire, then your car? Still it has to be safer than a motorcycle...
- unpolloloco, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1In China, all the cars are deathtraps anyway (reason being is that they're all the people there can afford), so it's not so much of a problem that they are selling it there first to test it out.
- failedpimp, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2Sold if I can deflate it and put it in my pocket. So worth it to never have to look for parking again.
- unpolloloco, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Don't all the cars in France get torched - not just plastic ones?
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe ... - old article, but you get the picture - DNABeast, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1˙uɐld ʇuɐıllıɹq ɹnoʎ uı ʍɐlɟ ɐ punoɟ ı
- darklights, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1If NASA are willing to fling a million (billion?) dollar peice of equipment at the surface of mars with only this thing as padding, I'm willing to bet a car smash in this wouldnt be too bad.
It would probably even be fun, if all cars were made like this! - pinchduck, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Wow. Very creative. I don't know if it will actually work, but I like the thought process.
- gkavalec, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Sheesh. I saw this on The Jetsons 45 years ago.
- Dotcommer, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Lol. It won't pop in a crash. Go do some research on the materials used and the results of the airbags used for dropping off discovery and spirit mars rovers.
- BoneheadFarker, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1And I bet you'd still have that one guy that just goes around in a circle whining that his doesn't work right...
- allisonaxe, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1now we just need to wait for other inflatable technology. I want my inflatable flying scooter, and an inflatable time machine!
- qwertycopter, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1No kidding. "You could drive it off a cliff without serious injury.” What about pointy rocks? Aren't there still hard pieces in the cabin?
- spacecheese, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2Fill the under body with Helium for better millage & handling
- emyo, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1That was my first thought!
