India’s First Green Housing Project Completed (pics)
inhabitat.com — According to the Planning Commission, India will need to generate at least 700,000 MW of additional power by 2030 to meet growing electricity demands. India will certainly be looking towards alternative energy sources to generate a substantial portion of this energy.

- sukmydigg, on 07/31/2008, -2/+28So they have "green housing projects" in India and all we have are "the *****' projects." Go figure.
- brainnovate, on 07/31/2008, -0/+16Are there any of these in the US yet? I see lots of new developments here in Utah where there is tons of sun, but no rooftop solar panels. In fact I am pretty sure the HOA in my neighborhood would have a ***** fit if anyone even tried it!
- MorganMghee, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1You have to gather up your like minded friends and show up at the city and town meetings, then be sure to vote when the matter comes up. If enough of you want to see AE in your hometowns then you will begin to see changes. There has been several success stories of citizens of a city or town joining together to get lower group rates from the local privately owned power company. Let me see if I can find that link.. Nope, I can't sorry. I remember it was a county that got together and through their government got everyone in town on one giant power bill at an extremely reduced rate.
- wunksta, on 08/01/2008, -0/+0they have clear solar panels that are more efficient than current ones now too! that means we can use them for windows etc
pretty crazy stuff, amazing what we can do when we put our minds to it
- lucy22, on 07/31/2008, -0/+17It looks very nice and modern. I wouldn't mind moving in myself.
- MikeChino, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9Renders are nice but I can't wait to see pics of the completed community!
- wezults, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2Yes, I thought I was going to when I saw (pics) in the title. How disappointing.
- DrJG, on 07/31/2008, -1/+17More power India - solar, wind, wave, tidal, soul, mind, ....
- TheThirdLevel, on 08/01/2008, -2/+0There's actually TONS of solar power there. I mean almost every house (not apartment) has at least 2-3 solar panels.
- ortucis, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2We do? HOLY *****!!!
- TheThirdLevel, on 08/01/2008, -2/+0There's actually TONS of solar power there. I mean almost every house (not apartment) has at least 2-3 solar panels.
- nobody98, on 07/31/2008, -9/+3Good good... Now when do they start tackling the problems of cheap child labour and extreme poverty?
- SmokedL, on 08/01/2008, -0/+6There are many important issues at any one time. Issues also effect each other. Building sustainable energy and decent housing is part of creating a long time infrastructure that is vital in order to be able to address the issues you mention.
There are no quick fixes to situations such as this one. You don't fix poverty on a national scale by handing out food packets. It requires a broader perspective. It requires you to create a functioning infrastructure so that a modern society is able to function at all.- huff51, on 08/01/2008, -6/+1"Building sustainable energy and decent housing is part of creating a long time infrastructure that is vital in order to be able to address the issues you mention"
smokedl you are on to something!
with all of the child labor and poverty, it is ensured that the housing prices will remain low! - SmokedL, on 08/01/2008, -0/+4"smokedl you are on to something!

I would love to hear about a country where people achieved a just society and general welfare of the population before they built a functioning infrastructure. In every country that I know of, throughout all of recorded history, it happened the other way around. The infrastructure enabled welfare and a just society. Please do provide examples if you think I'm wrong. Name one country in the world where it happened in the opposite order.
Of course you can't. It's by definition impossible. What we in the west consider to be extreme poverty is impossible to address without that infrastructure. Without houses, how can they be considered anything but poor? Without the ability to feed themselves, how in the world can you expect the children to not need to help provide for their family? - huff51, on 08/01/2008, -5/+1flawless logic! if it werent for slaves, how would the rest of the world know how awesome egypt used to be. just like slavery was necessary for the american industrial revolution! if it werent for slaves picking cotton so damned slow, the cotton gin would have never been invented!
maybe when individual rights werent the norm, your utopia of oppression was possible. just because hundreds of years ago people were treated like ***** in order to better the lives of people that had more money than them doesnt make it right today. - SmokedL, on 08/01/2008, -0/+5Now you're just blatantly trolling/ranting. I've done nothing to deserve this abuse.
Address the issues with something resembling a coherent argument if you expect any answer besides:"grow up".

- auranfyrbringer, on 08/01/2008, -0/+0This has become a trend of sorts around Digg. Everytime we hear about someone solving a problem, we rant about how there are other problems that haven't been solved. So seriously: WTF people?!!!. At least problems are getting solved! At the end of the day, if it makes the world a better place I'm all for it.
I agree that we shouldn't ignore the other problems in the world besides the ecological disaster we at rushing into. And we need to tackle them as well. But this is how most people solve problems: ONE F'ING PROBLEM AT A TIME!!!
We are so concerned about poverty lets start a fund and open up a factory or do something else to generate employment and welfare. That'll do a world of good more than your snide comments ever will. Geez...

- bixby1, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9This is really encouraging I think.
- maheshee11, on 08/01/2008, -0/+12"India receives about 5,000 trillion kilo-watt hour (kWH) equivalent of energy per year through solar radiation."
http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage. ...
This green housing project is a step in the right direction to harness a small percentage of the incident solar radiation.- arjie, on 08/01/2008, -0/+4Absolutely, in places like Rajasthan, and at Auroville, Pondicherry there are public kitchens that use solar furnaces. It's really cool. Some time ago, there was this report in the news that someone had invented a portable solar stove. I wish I could find it now, really cool stuff.
- TheThirdLevel, on 08/01/2008, -1/+0Yeah. A lot of house use solar power to at least heat water and stuff. It's getting better, but there's a long way to go.
- sesstreets, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2I'd live in it.
- tomarocco, on 08/01/2008, -12/+2***** Green. I'm sick of that *****.
- helloyamadotcom, on 08/01/2008, -1/+2wah wah ***** you, im sick of your *****.
- tomarocco, on 08/01/2008, -3/+1No natter how hopeful and righteous you are it won't make a damn bit of difference in this world until you yuppie ***** stop pumping out ***** machines. Get your god-damned tubes tied if you want to be green, but SHUT THE ***** UP ABOUT IT. Utopian Pussies...every last one of you. I'll ***** in your hybrid.
- helloyamadotcom, on 08/01/2008, -1/+1HAVE FUN CHOKING ON MONOXIDE FUMES :(
- helloyamadotcom, on 08/01/2008, -1/+1PUSSY
- tomarocco, on 08/02/2008, -2/+1helloyamadotcom, I'll bet you live in Seattle, right? No...I take that back...I'll bet you live in Olympia. Are you and Enviro-Terrorist?
- wunksta, on 08/01/2008, -1/+0its about being sustainable, at least for me. we need extra sources of energy that are cheap and available. we should also be able to manage our resources and meet our growth demands.
how is this stupid?
- helloyamadotcom, on 08/01/2008, -1/+2wah wah ***** you, im sick of your *****.
- Kiloboba, on 08/01/2008, -0/+7Hey first they run their cars off of water now they handle energy at home!!
I think I might be looking into the animation careers over there!!
By the way the currency in India is starting to beat up the English pound!! LOL- TheThirdLevel, on 08/01/2008, -2/+0That's coz we're cool. And about the currency - ***** no. Inflation is over 15% here.
- ortucis, on 08/01/2008, -1/+1ThirdLevel, aka, TheThirdPakistani, stfu.. please.
- TheThirdLevel, on 08/01/2008, -2/+0That's coz we're cool. And about the currency - ***** no. Inflation is over 15% here.
- newstart, on 08/01/2008, -1/+6Here are some small pics from inside the house with the list of facilities. Its in New Town in the state of West Bengal in India. I am actually thinking of moving their myself since it would be really nice living in a fully solar powered community!
- arjie, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2The pics are a lie.
No seriously, I think you forgot the link? I'd love to see those pictures. - newstart, on 08/01/2008, -0/+6Lol yea forgot the link my bad:

- huff51, on 08/01/2008, -4/+1i was expecting this to be from the onion
- nick111, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2Why?
I mean seriously - how has your thinking got to the point that you think that solar is a joke? It's the biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century, and you're sitting around scoffing while other people are actually going ahead and doing it?
- nick111, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2Why?
- cambob76, on 08/01/2008, -2/+1I always question these growth estimates. Aren't resources stretched pretty far already? Are we really going to solve the globe's oil demand in the next 20 years?
- MorganMghee, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2You aren't, apparently. Hey, did you hear a robot finding water on mars today?
- Barackalypse, on 08/01/2008, -5/+2Great, but maybe they should do something about their abysmal rural sanitation first, "Mr Singh told the BBC that more than 65% of India's rural population defecated in the open, along roadsides, railway tracks and fields, generating huge amounts of excrement every day."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4742929.stm- TheThirdLevel, on 08/01/2008, -2/+0Nothing is going to happen. Nobody cares enough to clean it up, and its too hard to enforce. Unfortunately it's going to stay that way for a while.
- ortucis, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2Looks like we need anti-Pakistani protection on Digg. Please stick to forums where you talk about death and blowing each other up for some virgin pussy.
- lithos76, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2Im pretty sure thats a Delorean coming out of the garage. Dugg
- karthikm, on 08/01/2008, -0/+4Is it a coincidence that this story about using solar energy is submitted by a person called sungoddess?
- pinkm2, on 08/01/2008, -0/+0really good,can I've the one??? For free :)
- gormanwvzb, on 08/01/2008, -1/+1Good to hear that India is doing this. It will help with their power consumption as well as their pollution.
It would have been good if they had used green roofs in the design. I have read a couple of good articles about green roofs in India, particularly in new high-end real estate. The article was titled, \"Green Roofs Help India\" found at http://cleanerairforcities.blogspot.com/2008/07/gr ...
Good to see the progress!
