India Sets Aside 40% of Regional Wasteland for Jatropha

gas2.org — By 2012, a large portion of India’s Uttar Pradesh region will be converted into Jatropha, a non-edible oil-seed crop that can be grown on marginal land.

  • gavinhudson, on 08/20/2008, -0/+11Hm... I read an EcoWorldly in the last couple days that said Peru is hoping to expand in Jatropha biodiesel. But that article was saying that they were trying to get it from Kenya. Maybe they could switch to imports from India.
  • ashishnayyar, on 08/20/2008, -1/+11Hey i have heard about it and god know why the Govt. isn't taking it seriously. May be amount of money they transfer in purchasing oil from Gulf and their commission is not letting them do it.
  • scotq, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8I love how they call it wasteland... why is all of the world's arable soil being co-opted so our fat asses can drive SUVs? We need to wean ourselves from unsustainable fuel usage, not find other ways to destroy the planet!

    Population - if it were a country wld be the world's 7th most populous country.
    In short, its packed to the brim with people. No space left to be called as wasteland
    Meaning - 40% of 'wasteland' wld be peanuts

    Stop digging pointless 'India' stories.
