Also, it appears from reporters near New Orleans, who have contacted the mayors office, people will not be turned away from evacuation. Homeless people can go as well, they are getting evacuation buses ready. People who are left behind however, cannot expect to find shelter. The super dome will be locked. Mixed reports are coming in that it might be guarded as well. Patrols by the National Guard and police will be conducted regularly after the storm. A mandatory curfew will be put in place during and after the storm. People who are found outside after the curfew hours, will be arrested.

Finally, some resources for residents who are still in New Orleans, AFTER the storm. Food Not Bombs, and Common Ground will be setting up volunteer food and first aid clinics.http://digg.com/world_new/Anarchist_Groups_Near_Gu ...
Looking for additional support groups right now. Anyone who knows of any, please post them here and on other threads, so that people may have these resources at their disposal, for themselves, or for friends and family. - madrigaelic, on 08/31/2008, -1/+16You can also follow James Janega, the Trib reporter, on Twitter itself. He's @GustavReporter and he's doing an awesome job sending out pics from the city. As a Wired reporter, I'm impressed: it looks like the future of breaking news coverage to me. Now let's hope that it can make a difference if anything really bad happens when Gustav makes landfall.
- notque, on 09/01/2008, -0/+15Remember to self limit your tweets on twitter. Want to keep outages low so that important messages can get through.
- notque, on 08/31/2008, -3/+17Join the Hurricane Gustav Digital Support Brigade: http://tinyurl.com/6ylztj
- onlinewoman, on 08/31/2008, -0/+13Awesome coverage, THANKS for all your hard work James!
- NateTheApe21, on 09/01/2008, -0/+10blogs are not "crucial decision-making tool", unless your decision making process is flawed
- phnx0221, on 08/31/2008, -0/+10There was a mix up regarding homeless people and whether or not they were going to be allowed to leave without identification. His call to the mayor's office cleared that one up.
I never used twitter before the DNC and RNC. The breaking of news from people there, from people looking to help the protesters, and now people breaking news with Gustav, and what people can do to help the people there, is amazing. It's a hell of a lot better than waiting for the polished report. - inactive, on 09/01/2008, -0/+10Only as events warrant, I promise.
- iptib, on 08/31/2008, -3/+13just amazing stuff.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9This is great.
- notque, on 09/01/2008, -0/+8Also http://gustavwiki.com/
- Jimbob200, on 09/01/2008, -0/+8Sounds kinda stupid to me. She leaves because her online community gets smaller, but did she ever look out the window to see the real community leaving?
- madrigaelic, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6Totally agreed. I think people are starting to realize the power of Twitter. Now if we only had faster cell phone networks so that live video worked for these sorts of things. That is the next step that I see for this type of reportage. I already carry a Flip video camera with me, but it takes time to upload and send. If I could do it live, I'd use it for reporting a lot more often.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6Thanks, you two. It feels really useful to me as a newsman, too.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6Great post, thanks.
- trollick, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6This comment will become a crucial decision making tool in New Orleans.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -1/+7I suppose as an article about the advance of Communications Technology, this is a pretty cool story; but, as an article about how people react to impending natural disaster, I think this story really serves to illustrate the true measure of the species idiocy. "I didn't feel I should leave when the well educated meteorologist was forecasting landfall of a hurricane in my below sea level community; but, when I saw that all my online friends were panicking, I panicked, too; and, I feel like a smarter person for it." How profoundly stupid.
- iloveazngurlzs, on 09/01/2008, -0/+4"It wasn't the National Guard Driving up and down each neighborhood, knocking on each door, or any television report stating a mandatory evacuation, No, it was her online friends that convinced her..."
Jeez, ***** mandatory evac and she wont listen to anyone but her "internet buddies." - nateisablog, on 09/01/2008, -1/+4I wonder if this blog helped make any decisions! LOL
http://nosesplash.com/blog-news/42-news/121-keysto ... - wiretapped, on 09/01/2008, -2/+5The storm was over hyped. Its only a lame category 2.
- JohnnySoftware, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2Towns along the Mississippi are being relocated practically every year.
- jgzman, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2That first live feed has a cool setup.
- shreela, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2It was a cat4 at one time. Luckily it didn't reorganize good enough before the loop current, otherwise Gustav probably would have come in much stronger. There's not a lot of ways to predict how a storm's going to react to crossing the loop currents, so this 'hype' was necessary IMO (unlike Fay).
Besides, a few levees have been at critical today, including one private levee. So the danger's not over under the water subsides enough not to threaten the levees. - Chazx, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2In New Orleans, tools become crucial decision making blog.
- j.carcinogen, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2Cat 2 hurricanes knocks the power out for a few days and does a lot of property damage. NOLA is below sea level and is a disaster waiting to happen, so a cat 2 could be pretty harmful to New Orleans.
- Jhiaxuz, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2Don't worry, I'm sure all the subsequent looting by both pedestrians and the police force will balance it out.
- ToiletGhost, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2National Weather Service > Idiot looking at cloud from window
- scoottie, on 09/01/2008, -2/+3they need to rebuild New Orleans in a better location. Being below sea level and on the coast where hurricanes are expected is not a good thing.
- iloveazngurlzs, on 09/01/2008, -1/+2Yea, great idea, lets relocate a city.
- T00NY, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1Twitter is a life saver! Now I've heard it all.
- scoottie, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1no because they are not below sea level
- lornali, on 09/04/2008, -0/+1Glogs show the way
- fritzbrown, on 09/01/2008, -1/+2Hurricanes are expected along the entire gulf coast, the east coast, the entire state of Florida, Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Bahamas, etc... should all those areas be deemed un-livable?
