I've always felt that feel-good programs such as curb-side recycling actually cost more in terms of environmental impact than they benefit. People typically recycle only a small percentage of their waste, and to do that we've established a parallel infrastructure to handle it -- recycle bins, special trucks, recycle depots, etc. And still most of our refuse is wasted. If we REALLY want to 'save the planet' then we have to develop technology to recycle ALL of our waste, not once, but again and again and again. Plasma Enhanced Melter technology could be part of the solution -- we could set up huge regional recycle centers with rail lines shipping millions of tons of refuse from population centers to be converted into materials ready for industry. Power the PEMs with Nuclear power plants. Then we'd have a long-term viable solution for our solid waste.
