- Shiftgood, on 07/02/2009, -1/+36We over-fished our rivers.
Kill the pelicans. - DankBuddz, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11The answer to that question probably lies within the article you didn't read.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -6/+15If you lived here you would see the problem first hand. The rivers are not over fished. Fish hatcheries have outdoor bays that are VERY dense with fish. One swoop by a pelican is jackpot for the bird. Propane cannons have worked for years, but even birds begin to ignore the loud explosions as their population explodes. Sorry but I like my sushi much more than pelican.
- angusm, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8"kill and haze"? According to Merriam-Webster, 'haze' means "to harass by exacting unnecessary or disagreeable work; to harass by banter, ridicule, or criticism; to haze by way of initiation".
If the plan was to have employees of the Fish & Game commission hang out in pelican roosts and shout insults at the birds, I'm not surprised they put a stop to it.
"Hey, you! Yes, you, the scruffy-looking one on the end. Is that your beak, or are you wearing a handbag on your face? Whatcha got in there, anyway, you greedy sucker? ... Yes, bucket-face, I'm talking to you. What kind of bird are you supposed to be? You look like someone's attempt to make a seagull out of a Thanksgiving turkey ... And all the rest of you ducks-gone-wrong can wipe those grins off your faces - I'm getting to you." - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -1/+9OK, so we net the fish hatcheries. Which has already been done to most I might add, using metal wire. Then the pelicans begin to starve to DEATH. Sorry but over-population only has one solution, would you rather deal with starving birds or aborted eggs? You belong to the most over-populated species on earth, shall we net your mom's pussy?
Oh another thing, which is why I love living in Idaho. If there was no article, NOBODY would know, or give a flying **** as they ordered another McChicken from the dollar menu. I blast away birds that dive at my head, build nests big enough to ruin my porch light, and enjoy doing it, but that's just Idaho. - DankBuddz, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7Pure gold, right here.
- woofers07, on 07/02/2009, -4/+11As an avid fly-fisherman, I think this seems ass-backwards. "Nature's killing the fish just as it has been for thousands of years, but now it's messing up our fish killing time. Let's kill nature."
Add stricter fishing laws! - chadsmith729, on 07/02/2009, -2/+9How the hell is this front page worthy? Good job Idaho? Way to get rid of them pesky American white pelicans in the southeastern Idaho area to protect your fish.
- jerbaker, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6I'm pretty sure that killing or hazing fisherman won't hurt the ecosystem. Win-win?
- DankBuddz, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7So sport fishing now supports livelihoods and foodstock? Thats news to me.
- TobiasParker, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7Kill and Haze? Are they pledging or something?
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -3/+8If they are killing the pelicans just so that people can fish more, well then, thats about as dumb as Alaskas Wolf Culling (lets kill wolves, so we can have more deer/moose to kill). They should just suspend fishing than ask for Federal approval to kill these birds.
- kmb1794, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Wait...won't the pelicans die off if they kill too many fish anyway?
- borez, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Enough of this pelican bothering.
- the2989, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Game and Parks knows their animal populations and conservation techniques better than most diggers, I'm not worried. I'm usually against animalcides like this, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
- leif777, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4Greed, stupidly, and lack of respect this planet ultimately kill us all... I think it's fitting.
- DankBuddz, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5The problem here is that those fish hatcheries don't want to invest in available defensive measures to protect their stock, because its cheaper to kill the birds.
I have no sympathy for them. - inigomntoya, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Being an Idaho native, I can tell you that there are no fags in Idaho. We do not have that problem.
/blindness - johndavidjack, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2^^^
I'm digging you up because you are cool...
And yes, I do drain society, but you're paying for me, so it's all good... - seanoneil14, on 07/02/2009, -3/+5THANK YOU. I was trying to explain this to someone next to me and they called me a "goddamn conservative". People sometimes...
- Y0tsuya, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Hatcheries are like an all-you can eat buffet for pelicans. I've experienced similar issues with my koi pond here in California. Tried various bird chasers and fences but kept losing very expensive fishes. It goes like this:
1) Pond keeper adds koi
2) Pond keeper installs pest chaser
3) Herons eat koi
4) GOTO 1
And I can't shoot the damn birds since they're protected. Finally had to put a huge net over the whole pond. - harryterry, on 07/02/2009, -6/+8Wait wait. A Idaho fag is planning to kill pelicans???
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3Are you bitching about the geese getting killed in the name of airliner safety too?
- johndavidjack, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Thank you. People's concepts of reality are hilarious.
Everyone has lots of fake outrage and think they know something when they read wikipedia and a couple blogs. - bigern75, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2fear not the obstacles in your path
- D1CE, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Dugg for both being from Idaho and recognizing the, hmm, interesting opinions of Idahoans and their respective politics.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2It's called wildlife management. Like it or not, we need to engage in that sort of thing from time to time. It's well planned, has lots of data to back it up, and is extremely effective.
The thing that rubs me the wrong way here is that it's being done because our own greed has ***** up another species population so that these birds are now a "pest". - Heywoodj, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Any thing that messes with our hunting or fishing out here will be shot.
Thats just how we roll.
Besides them pelicans are good eating.
They taste just like Bald eagle. - skinturtle, on 07/02/2009, -2/+3Yes but they are not real pelicans yet...or this is the anti-abortion type argument when it comes to humans.
- DankBuddz, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2Sorry, I care more for a living ***** organism than somebody's material ***** monetary units, you shallow *****. ***** you.
You are a drain on society. - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1I've been waiting a long time to get my revenge...
- DrRetro, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1So... they're looking to put an end to a mostly natural process to satisfy their sport...
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Somehow putting oil on eggs to suffocate unborn Pelicans seems wrong. Maybe I'm just squeemish.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I had a flight this morning but the plane vanished, so I went fishing instead.
- ninjad, on 07/02/2009, -3/+3suffocating embryos with oil sounds really brutal and excessive almost like an unreasonable punishment for the unborn animals that haven't even done any destruction to the precious fish supply of idaho
- caramba421, on 07/02/2009, -0/+0Apparently they're planning to *haze* them, too. Only in Idaho would they want to do homoerotic frat-boy ***** with pelicans.
- johndavidjack, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1I don't stand by, I kill as many geese as possible.
When I see geese and goslings crossing the street when I'm driving my truck, I don't slow down. But they move out of the way. MLIA - spongya77, on 07/02/2009, -2/+2Really? Are people that stupid? This whole ***** idea never worked in the last 200 years it's been tried -over and over, everywhere in the world.
I guess some people just likes to shoot *****, and just needs some justification.
They should be enrolling in the military instead of shooting birds. - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -3/+3All of you bitch, but stand by while geese are getting killed for the human pleasure of air travel. Fishing may be considered a sport but will still feed you when all the planes have vanished.
- skinturtle, on 07/02/2009, -0/+0Doesn;t matter what you think of my post..the result will be the same
- Midtowner, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1So I guess we should just repeal the endangered species act?
- Bullislander05, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1Haha that's the first thing I saw too. My iPod was sitting on the table and I glanced down and went "What!?" Then I read it and was depressed. :P
Seriously though, haven't we learned by now that man trying to modify nature has disastrous effects? - johndavidjack, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1Fake outrage.
- johndavidjack, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1No, it's fun to shoot geese.
People, not so much.
I guess I'm just more attached to people and put people's lives over animals, what can I say. Call me sick. - Midtowner, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1Ever been to Idaho? No?
Why do you even care then? - Tronec, on 07/02/2009, -1/+0Louisiana does not approve.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -3/+2I can get mesh netting at Home Depot that should do the trick, or you can get fishing nets from a marine supply store.
I'll pitch in for the rope to tie it on 4 corners, too.
Somehow putting a ***** cover on fish hatcheries seems cheaper and easier than hiring 20 Elmer Fudds. - skinturtle, on 07/02/2009, -3/+2Humans are screwing themselves right into a tight little hole...a polluted, suffocating bum hole as a matter of fact. They over fish something...so then the birds go elsewhere to feed...all of them now....lol..then they have to kill the excess feeders off....which probably will cause a rise in something else. Not mention all the deforestation we've done and the building of cities destroying habitats. We are all headed for the last little hole of water soon.
I really hate humanity...and I'm really disgusted that I have to be one. The consequnces of this garbage can't come quick enough for me..even if I end up dying too. To watch the greedy and selfish of the world have to try and survive with the consequences they've created for themselves....would bring great joy to my heart. - johndavidjack, on 07/02/2009, -3/+2Why should you have sympathy? You're an obvious dopehead that has no financial ties to fish hatcheries, so of course it's easy to sit on your high horse and condemn.
Btw, you are correct, shotgun shells are cheaper, but beer is pretty expensive... - hudy23, on 07/02/2009, -5/+3wait im confused, is the pelican population high enough that it can sustain this and it will ultimately help the fish, or will this just hurt the pelicans?
