- polumrak, on 03/27/2009, -0/+16So, a greenhouse gas which leaks during extraction and produces another greenhouse gas during burning is green.
So is coal, then. - varun1s, on 03/27/2009, -1/+14Methane hydrates are old news....this is just content recycle and reuse by newscientist......good reading though if you're new to this
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/26/2009, -1/+12It's a solid, not gaseous laser. Put simply, in deference to you Kent, it's like lazing a stick of dynamite...
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -1/+10I'm not a smart man, but why would burning natural gas trapped in ice cost less/use less energy than just burning plain natural gas?
- lolwutpear, on 03/27/2009, -0/+8Fossil fuels - the energy source of tomorrow!
... - anonymousmedic, on 03/27/2009, -0/+7What about the yellow snow?
- pinchduck, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6Good idea. Out of curiosity, when can we expect you to unveil your magic car that runs on smiles and emits only rainbows? Tuesday? Maybe Friday? Maybe never, because you do nothing but bitch? Thought so.
Innovation is not about giving spoiled diggers their answers RIGHT NOW. It's about trying many solutions, some of which are incremental improvements over what we have now, some of which are not as good. You refine the good ones until you get even better solutions. Somewhere along this lengthy process of hard work and creativity, we may get a breakthrough. The breakthrough could even come from solutions that look sub-optimal at this point. Taking your advice and shutting off all avenues of research that involve combustion makes less sense than teaching creationism in science class. And that is quite a leap. - tgc1, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6Don't eat it.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -3/+9Burning anything isn't emission free.
- RunLikeTheWind, on 03/26/2009, -4/+9I think this burny ice is what the doctor used to remove that wart from my foot when I was 8.
- grannyklump, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4Energon Cubes?
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4All of them? You're going to go to their houses and ***** on them? What about their kids, they're probably future scientists, better do those too. Oh, and their relatives. What constitutes a scientist, anyway? Just poop them all.
- polumrak, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4So ice that is buried on the bottom of the sea under a layer of sediment would require less work than underground gas, which was extracted for centuries now?..
- inverselogic, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3You get a digg for quoting a guilty pleasure.
- linagee, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Burning plain natural gas is not article worthy you see.
- inverselogic, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3beat me to it
- williepepper, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Hooray!!!
Another limited fossil fuel to become addicted to!!!
Only reason we don't have more solar is the government hasn't figured out how to tax it.
TRUE STORY. - FDisk, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4Burn it with fire!!! Wait... :-|
- 03fb, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3one day for every dwarf, today is Dopey
- soupdawg30, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Hard part is getting it off the ocean floor.
- MWeather, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2So we don't have more solar because instead of taxing it, the government pays us to install it?
- williepepper, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Tax the geration of electricity made buy it.
If you make your own you won't have to buy it from the phone company. - linagee, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Just spend some money and energy trucking it away. Oh wait...
- Scanner, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Buried for inacuracies. Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas then Carbon dioxide and mining the hydrate will most certainly release it directly to the atmosphere. We already have a large supply of natural gas that is easier to come by anyway.
Also the article states frankly that "burning it still releases carbon dioxide and thus drives climate change." This has still not been proven directly. Ice core samples show CO2 increases following warming cycles not preceeding them therefore CO2 cannot be driving warming (or cooling). I think we should stop trying to solve a problem that we A) don't understand and B) don't know if its really a problem. - JT114881, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2Burn it with... water??? Wait.... :-|
- drunkenkite, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2SHHHH megatron will hear you!
- verticalconserv, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2The ice is melting at a staggering rate and now we want to burn it to get captured natural gas? Seems like an odd solution for our energy needs.
- Stevin, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I saw this on NatGeo a few months ago, iirc there was a huge obstacle to overcome "mining" it, but I don't remember what the problem was...
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Why is that a "guilty" pleasure?
- joelsmif, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2It's reliant on you ice machine still working in your fridge.
- electrc, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2What's the catch?
- yoderizer, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2So how do you collect the methane once its release from the ice? In a big bag?
- Efilnikufesin, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2ice burn!
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Hemp fuel is better and more efficient than this will ever be. BURIED
- JayD16, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1hydrogen just makes water...
- 03fb, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1I bet Mr Freeze would think thats an ICE idea!
- Paxmanifesto, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Well, natural gas does burn much cleaner than gasoline or coal, and is much less taxing on our air to purify.
I just don't know if our nation would be able to make a swift switch over towards this fuel, or if there would naturally be enough of it to supply our needs.
Of course it would be great and much better for the environment, but it wouldn't get rid of the problem completely like hydrogen fueled engines are doing right now.
But it's neat! - griffrs, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Buried because the site is called New Scientist, and I saw this on Discovery Channel well over a year ago.
- lornali, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1This could have a lot of potential
- graphictruth, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1Beats the hell out of tar sands.
- insanebrain, on 03/27/2009, -6/+7>"Natural gas locked up in water crystals could be a source of enormous amounts of energy"
It is still all about burning gas. THAT IS NOT GREEN !! As long as all those scientific losers keep coming up with some sort of burning process, I will ***** on them. - sameer768, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1We have much easier access to ice I suppose, so it would require less work to get to the gas deposits?
Who knows. - palehorse864, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1I've known about this stuff for years.
http://gothamist.com/attachments/nyc_daveh/icyhot. ... - inactive, on 03/27/2009, -3/+3Hold on a sec; the greenies have been screaming that we're running out of fossil fuels, and yet, here's a new, untapped source of them. So which greenwashed lie am I supposed to believe today?
- stumper, on 03/27/2009, -2/+2Wait. You liberals now aren't happy enough at the rate you are saying the ice caps are melting? Now you have to go out and burn them?
Awesome! - jonathan200, on 08/13/2009, -0/+0Good information, thanks =) http://free-energy-now.com/
- suzanek, on 03/27/2009, -3/+2We will pay price for burning.
- DRNOOO, on 03/27/2009, -2/+1black ice ?
