Freakishly strong hippies. - rtcrooks, on 02/07/2008, -0/+19sweatshop?
- rentmitchum, on 02/07/2008, -0/+17I'd imagine they could turn it into electricity.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -1/+11And some people thought that a movie about human beings creating energy to feed machines was a bad idea.
- shapattack, on 02/07/2008, -1/+10This is great. Imagine what colleges or hotels could do with this kind of technology.
- skyrix03, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6it dosnt matter necause people are going to drive to the gym anyway theres no extra driving just because the gym switched to this method of energy production
- macguy815, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6I wonder if anyone has done the fact checking behind whether the CO2 from body's burning of glucose required to power the generator is less than the amount of CO2 given off by burning coal to power the gym...
Gotta remember that our cells aren't exactly carbon neutral either :-p
Regardless, the people are going to be giving off just as much CO2, the gym is just harvesting the energy from it that would otherwise be wasted. - inactive, on 02/07/2008, -1/+7So ignore the energy output that can come from this, by all means.
- rentmitchum, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6Sounds better as Biokinetic Electricity Plant.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Too bad America also has an exercise problem :(
- simg, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4*not much* electricity to be more precise
- rentmitchum, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Not really.
- NightVortez, on 02/07/2008, -1/+5I like how there are people insecure enough with their sexuality to actually not bury spam like this.
- DontGiveADamn, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4Wouldn't it be more efficient to just make the people into food, Soylent Green style.
- rentmitchum, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3*see "The Matrix" for more information.
- FDDIcent, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4In the most literal sense.
- badave, on 02/07/2008, -1/+4I'm not gay, and I dug you down. Not sure what sexuality has to do with it at all, guess you must be a moron.
- BearinG, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2And still charge you the same
- no1joel, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2They're doing this with the gym - sorry, "Healthy Living Centre" - that's opening up near me within a month or so.
I was really impressed with it actually - jmpeagle, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2it probably wasn't feasible awhile back.
- vikingcoder, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Macguy815 did not mention, nor even imply, anything about corollary emissions from fossil fuel usage in the production & distribution of foodstuffs. The comment was specifically about the CO2 produced from the body's burning of glucose.
My comment did not come from the US DOE. I wrote that entire reply at the time of posting.
Your reply was merely a pathetic attempt to change the subject and irrelevantly implicate me as a plagiarist again, rather than discuss the science of the matter. - Lewie, on 02/07/2008, -1/+3Either I'm gay, or I think Regal is a douche.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Your complete failure to take action and show them showed them.
- stretch611, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Am I the only one thinking that the amount of energy is pathetic? After all, I would expect the amount of energy produced to power far more than a simple radio. Even a CD player which requires mechanically spinning a disc at high speed can run off 3volts (2 - aa batteries) Shouldn't you be able to run a tv, or if everyone in the gym is combined, power a small house?
- shcon, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Perfect way to cash in on the green energy hype! Seems like everyone is obsessed with making the world more energy efficient now... and hey why not??! People are interested in things like free energy, and it might give people a new interest in going to the gym! I think I'd go to a green gym just to check it out!
- Bluebonic, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Absolutely creative, i hope gyms like that pop up around here in VA. If you get a chance check out my article on environmental tax deductions. :) peace
- bdbElysian, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1All gyms should do this. Their own clientele can augment their electrical needs just by doing what they paid to do in the first place: exercise.
- thinktrunk, on 02/07/2008, -2/+3That's great... Drive to the gym in your Hummer, ride the bike to save electricity, then take a long hot shower. Hop in your Hummer, and call it a night.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -2/+3Oh, haha, I get it! Thanks for explaining with that bit at the end.
- vikingcoder, on 02/07/2008, -2/+3The carbon dioxide in human, and all other, breath was taken out of the atmosphere by plants through photosynthesis - whether you eat the plants directly or animals that eat the plants. Thus, there is a closed loop, with no net addition to the atmosphere.
- vikingcoder, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Basic knowledge typed into a digg comment is plagiarizing?
My reply was not copy & pasted. I was replying to the comment as it was presented.
The research is readily available, especially for a manager who is a member of the AGU. I had no desire to continue that discussion when you appeared to only be interested in obtaining sound bites supporting your opinions, rather than the science. - badave, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Small steps, muzzamo. Baby steps.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1It's a good idea. I enjoy the thought of someday harnessing the energy of all the fat ***** in the world. Vast warehouses of sweating chubbies going at it so I can heat my water. Awesome.
- badave, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1I doubt it's about the money, it's probably about saving coal, energy.
- LiquidCure, on 02/07/2008, -0/+0If they can transplant that technology into Tony Little's Gazelle, consider me in.
- rye425, on 02/07/2008, -2/+2Really cool idea. Reminds me of the Superbowl announcement that the first 30min was human powered by cyclists.
- sonicularulus, on 02/07/2008, -2/+2Well of that were true, al gore wouldve killed a lot of people by now
- onTheJDAR, on 02/07/2008, -4/+4This is all well and good, but the amount of energy created will probably be far less in worth than the cost of the generators. I like the idea, but if you really care, go buy some carbon credits, solar panels, or whatever green people like to spend their money on. This is a huge waste of resources.
- FatLoser, on 02/07/2008, -3/+3Based on my assessment of the Digg community, I think you can expect to find yourself BURIED DEEP -- TO THE HILT. (they r lots of gays)
- reconflux, on 02/15/2008, -1/+1More Scientology Propaganda! Go Screw!
- joclark, on 02/07/2008, -0/+0I love the idea - it's progress.
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -1/+1I thought it was hilarious too. Hilarious.
- PizzaPops, on 02/07/2008, -1/+1What is the Matrix? Control. The Matrix is a computer-generated dream world built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this. [holds up a Duracell battery]
One step closer... - Murdats, on 02/07/2008, -2/+1by a while back I mean 2nd half of last year, when this guy would of been starting his business.
- rentmitchum, on 02/07/2008, -2/+1It's about time someone cared for the environment more than ease of living. (-_-)
Good for YOU. THYANKS!!! - inactive, on 02/11/2008, -2/+1I am extraordinarily interested in the science.
Please tell me how much of the warming since 1978 is due to CO2 produced via burning of fossil fuels.
Some research suggests none of it, some suggests all of it. I would like to continue our discussion. - inactive, on 02/10/2008, -2/+1from http://cdiac.ornl.gov/pns/faq.html
" Q. Should we be concerned with human breathing as a source of CO2?
A. No. While people do exhale carbon dioxide (the rate is approximately 1 kg per day, and it depends strongly on the person's activity level), this carbon dioxide includes carbon that was originally taken out of the carbon dioxide in the air by plants through photosynthesis - whether you eat the plants directly or animals that eat the plants. Thus, there is a closed loop, with no net addition to the atmosphere. Of course, the agriculture, food processing, and marketing industries use energy (in many cases based on the combustion of fossil fuels), but their emissions of carbon dioxide are captured in our estimates as emissions from solid, liquid, or gaseous fuels."
The full quote gives more information.
The question asked before remains open:
http://www.digg.com/environment/AGU_says_we_ARE_th ... - edebolt, on 02/07/2008, -2/+1a stationary bike hooked up to a battery? Wowee. What about riding a bike around Seattle instead of driving or taking a bus?
- versatilier, on 02/07/2008, -2/+1damnit i came up with this years ago, i wish i had money
