- Nintendesert, on 07/12/2009, -1/+21Only $40,000? What a deal!
- PuddMaster, on 07/12/2009, -0/+20how the ***** can that thing cost $40K?! HOW?
it would be sweet to have one, but that price is ridiculous - 4AntiStupid, on 07/12/2009, -0/+15It sounds like the pedaling is mostly just to give you something to do. You have to charge up the battery before you use it. The "electrical power multiplying" comment is nonsense unless we're tossing out conservation of energy. You can get a the same effect as gears using an electric generator and motor, but it's far less efficient than just using a chain drive.
- atlquaker, on 07/12/2009, -0/+14That's a pretty expensive moped...
- aklu, on 07/12/2009, -0/+12Say what you want. I want one of these bikes. I'd ride it to work every day.
- NiftyG, on 07/12/2009, -0/+11You can already buy a very nice electric motorcycle or scooter for about $10K, why spend $40k on this?

http://www.enertiabike.com/ - 11familyguy11, on 07/12/2009, -0/+9The video said that it retails for about $40,000
Absurd. - 4AntiStupid, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6But the pedaling doesn't actually power the bike. It's just acting as a speed control. That could just be replaced with a hand grip speed control for a more conventional design.
- igutekunst, on 07/12/2009, -1/+6I don't she even meant actually multiplying the energy, just putting more energy into the wheels from a battery.
- Taiyoryu, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4The bike pedals act as a throttle. The faster you pedal, the faster you go. Don't pedal and you're in neutral. It's just more intuitive for someone used to riding a bike than for someone who's never rode a motorcycle where the throttle is located on the handle. It's the same multiplicative power one gets when driving a car---the further you push the accelerator pedal the faster the car goes whether it's an ICE, hybrid, or full electric.
- Vodd9, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Because it's a guy making it in his shelter. Big difference with mass factory produced cars.
- loathing, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Looks dangerous!
- marsbeyond, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3try a roadmaster mountain bike plus a wilderness energy electric hub motor kit for less than 500 bucks
- ddrucker, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I want one, once it reaches a reasonable price range.
- fragMasterFlash, on 07/12/2009, -2/+4Human, robot, ROCK!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz97qIwSags - specialbuddy1, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Buried because you don't know how to post links.
- kd1s, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Just over $40,000? What the hell! Bring that down by a factor of 10 and I might think about it.
- marciot, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Nah, the bike is perfectly safe. It's the stationary things you can collide with which are dangerous.
- shinkou, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Innovative idea + sophisticated implementation. Dugg!
- tgc1, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I was all ready to sign up to buy one until I read heard the price.
What in the holy ***** ***** is that? 40k?! You can buy a nice used BMW for that kind of money. Are they insane? - caller9, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2You are joking right?
Human recommended diet is 2000 Calories per day, or 2000000 thermochemical calories. That is 2.324 kWh
http://www85.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=2000000+cal ...
That is a ridiculously low amount of energy considering the processing power, movement, heating, cooling, etc systems. - IronDonut, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2It's a gimmicky electric motorcycle. Far from a bicycle.
- guinpen, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2this is obviously just some liberal propaganda to get us to abort our precious children
- compgeek, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2this is pretty darn cool. not only do you get excercise but it actually goes at a very useful speed heck of a nice machine
- AngelBunny, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1:'(
- Xaevier, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2I wonder if you need a motorcycle license to ride one?
- Super6, on 07/12/2009, -2/+3Humans are very inefficient, we only accept food as fuel, which we then spend energy converting into something we can use.
- AngelBunny, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2Anyone know how much a bike like this costs and do you need a motorcycle license to use it? It would be awesome to bike from here Sebastopol, CA to San Francisco, CA in one of those.
- worldgate989, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1So you travel at high speed on a standard bicycle and have no anti-lock brakes or stopping power and still pay 40k? I'll pass.
I can buy a nice car with 40k. - themastersb, on 07/13/2009, -2/+3If they were to mass produce them they'd probably be in the range of 1 ~ 5K.
Or they could come up with a bunch of BS as to how it's easy to use, virus free and has an elegant design. If they go with that they just need to wait for it to catch on. - mtnboy, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2On eRockit Website it says that Paddling is what starts the bike and the faster you paddle, the faster you will go and max out at 50mph.
- 4AntiStupid, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0I dunno. $40K is pretty pricey even for a custom. I think he's going after some niche market sales before getting the margin down to a more reasonable level. I'd love to be able to build a few of those a year and make a living.
- Googoozilla, on 07/13/2009, -1/+1I don't understand why they can`t use the same kind of technology to enhance a horizontal waterwheel or wind turbine...(one battery charging while another one is in use)
- DiggMikeS, on 07/13/2009, -0/+0Sorry, I hope this works better.

http://www.zapworld.com/ - DiggMikeS, on 07/12/2009, -3/+2Buried because there are many other alternatives out there (http://www.zapworld.com/) and have been for some time, including work being done by Dean Kamen (http://www.zeromotorcycles.com).
Anyone who really digs this sort of thing would already know all that. Here's betting all the diggs are from German IP's.
Also buried because of stupid lady who reports on bicycles but doesn't know how to ride one. - NiftyG, on 07/12/2009, -1/+0I doubt it would have the range to get you to SF from Sebastopol.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -6/+4Push-bikes are for sissies.
