- whytheam, on 10/06/2008, -8/+35Do I care?
- l33tmike, on 10/06/2008, -1/+27Stopped reading when they started referring to kilowatts as a unit of energy - if they don't understand what they're writing about I can't be bothered to read it
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -1/+25Not Very...
- graemee, on 10/06/2008, -0/+23Green is a colour, not a life style.
- Erythroxylum, on 10/06/2008, -4/+25'Reusable tote bag? Prius? Rooftop solar panels?' No, no and no. I'm heterosexual.
Green bragging rights. That's a good one.
'Ooh, my computer is green! Aren't I special.' Yeah, real special. Like a bloody stool.
- datastorageguy, on 10/06/2008, -0/+16If you mean: Do I turn it off when I don't use it to save power and lower my electricity bill, then yes.
If you mean: Do I use my case fans to chop down the rain forest and use the polar ice caps to cool my dual core, then no. - jggube, on 10/05/2008, -0/+16Was about to say that. 500W, doesn't get turned off, massive graphics card, raptor drives... I'm not even close to any shade of green.
- Donniehoward08, on 10/06/2008, -1/+16eew....a green computer would like totally look terrible..no way
- Slade605, on 10/06/2008, -0/+15One 'Killa' Watt power supply here.
- goldenhearted, on 10/06/2008, -0/+15My computer is green with envy.
Envious at all the super computers that can run modern PC games like Crysis. - psion01, on 10/06/2008, -0/+13I don't really care how "green" my computer is, so long as it's able to handle the tasks I set before it reasonably quickly. I *do* care about how expensive the machine's electrical consumption is, so I've chosen a comfortable trade off between the cost of the system, speed, and cost to power it.
- Sottilde, on 10/06/2008, -0/+12FTA: "A standard-issue PC, left on all the time (a not-uncommon situation) consumes 746 kilowatts per hour a year, according to estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency."
This is from the very beginning of the article. If they can't even get this right, the staple of their article, why should I read anything? What a stupid mistake.
"There's also the issue of "phantom" or "vampire" power: Just because your computer or laptop is shut down doesn't mean it's not using energy. Almost every piece of electronics uses power even when it is turned off. For example, your television turns on instantly because it is actually a little bit on already. In the case of your desktop, your computer stays in standby mode so it can keep data in its memory, its clock accurate and other functions. This means the average desktop PC wastes half its power."
JESUS. What the hell are they talking about? The BIOS keeping time uses half of it's "kilowatts per hour per year" or some *****? - kreatre2007, on 10/06/2008, -5/+17Well, the case is made out of recyclable aluminum but other than that, I'm not sure. I really don't give a damn anyway. ***** all of you "green" Nazis. I'm sick of this *****. The only way to truly be "green" is to go live in the wilderness with no clothing, no fire, no hygiene products of any kind, no soap, no shampoo, etc. Just live like animals. Until you "green" kooks do that, shut the ***** up and leave the rest of us alone.
- EmailAddress, on 10/06/2008, -0/+9amen
- EmailAddress, on 10/06/2008, -0/+9Crysis has a large carbon foot print. We should all boycott Crysis because it requires lots of power...
- JasonCox, on 10/06/2008, -0/+8They cost me about $30 bucks a month worth of power and thats not counting when I have to kick the AC on to cool the place down; does that answer your question?
- koanage, on 10/06/2008, -0/+8my computer has a green "refurbished" sticker underneath it :-(
- dagr8tim, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7The article completely ignores cases where you need the device always on. I'm not sure if the author missed that point or refused to concede that he/she might not be completely correct.
I set most of my PC's to sleep/shut off monitor/ect.... But I've got a headless P4 system that is life support for several drives.I need this computer to be at the ready all the time. How does the author propose I do that? - KMartSheriff, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7Hell no. SLI/Crossfire that bitch, add in a few more HDDs, and d/l torrents all day.
- unpolloloco, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7"In the case of your desktop, your computer stays in standby mode so it can keep data in its memory, its clock accurate and other functions. This means the average desktop PC wastes half its power."
WTF???? When I hit "turn off" to shut my computer down, it apparently instead decides to interpret my mouse click as a couple of inches left of the "turn off" button and clicks the "stand by" button. Never knew that. - UTPinky, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7I've got a Mac which apparently causes cancer, so probably not very green =)
- graemee, on 10/06/2008, -1/+7He's dead.
- proliance, on 10/06/2008, -1/+7If my pc used 746 kilowatts per hour, that adds up to about $1600 per day, or $584,000 per year in electricity. Not only would I not turn it on, but I'd burn it and bury it in the back yard.
- kozie, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6Prius? Get a diesel you idiot! Stop bragging about inefficient poorly built cars!! (Comment direction at author of article...)
- mojoe1185, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6I second that comment.
- tbredofsin, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6Don't set your hard drive to sleep. As far as I know, that means it stops spinning. Most hard drive wear and tear occurs when spinning up and spinning down. So if you value your data more than a tiny amount of energy savings, just let it run until you turn your computer off.
- graemee, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5with blue LEDs, lots and lots of bright blue LEDs.
- jacekpoplawski, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5I remember 10 years ago motherboard with "green" signs. It's all the same *****. You just produce something which uses a little less energy and call it "green". It's not ***** green, it's just less gray. It's like this "dietetic" food which makes you so fat.
- kreatre2007, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5Mankind will always have an impact on the environment. You're deluding yourself.
- BillDoE, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5None of your ***** business!
- ChileanGoD, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5Nothing a can of green spray paint wont fix.
- EmailAddress, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5why do the masses have to be "green" ? We are consumers. The producers should be concerned about green or not. Tree huggers trying to affect my consuming power?
If I want 2x1KW power supplies and 2 video cards in SLI... that's my business, I go to the store and buy it. Problem? Complain to the producers for being inefficient. - wassim2k, on 10/06/2008, -1/+6Annoying post description. Check.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4I'd be in trouble if it were any shade of green.
- maz2331, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4750 kW? Guess it's a typo...
750 kW is a LOT of power.... as in enough for smelting Aluminum from ore. - inactive, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4Well with a 1000 watt green lamp it looks green. I just tested it and oh boy its green alright...
- tejini, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4Hmm, ask me if I care?
- KMartSheriff, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4In that case, I couldn't be more for Crysis.
- fluxion, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4that would be assuming you guys with your 600W+ power supplies actually consumed anything close to max output.
comps generally draw bout 100W. that said, 50W in standby still doesnt sound right. - notjasonlee, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4i am currently at work but my computer at home is on RIGHT NOW
IM MAD WITH POWER - Teh1337Pirate, on 10/06/2008, -1/+5I stopped reading after I saw "Prius." You want to know how green your smug piece of ***** really is? The nickle used in your hybrid batteries causes more destruction to the environment than the entire essembly of a Land Rover Discovery. Don't those batteries have to be changed out every 3-5 years or so? GOD I HATE PRIUS'S!!!
- kreatre2007, on 10/06/2008, -1/+5CFL bulbs contain mercury. How do you propose that we dispose of them properly? An incandescent bulb is far less harmful. This idea that we MUST consume less electricity is not about eliminating fossil fuels. That will happen over time. It's more about controlling what we do and telling us that we must live with less. We should keep our A/Cs at 80 degrees or some other dumb ass thing. I say ***** that. No one has the right to tell me how to live. I don't waste. I don't pollute. I do this by choice -- not because I have some enviro-Nazi view of the world. Recycling is the key to reducing the ecological impact of our manufactured goods. Everything can be recycled. The problem with recycling is that it's not convenient. If you make it convenient and something as easy to do as taking out the trash, more people will do it. We shouldn't have to sort or worry about what goes where. Just toss the waste into a container and walk away. Let the recycling industry figure out the best way to process everything. American industry used to be innovative. We need to start being that way again.
- Knowltey, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3Yeah, the CMOS battery does that, otherwise unplugging your computer would make the clock reset...
- notjasonlee, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3tell that to zombie bob marley bro
- EmailAddress, on 10/06/2008, -1/+4so pathetic.... "Well I finally made the switch, I'm completely green now."
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -3/+6Better ideas:
Insulate your house
Buy new double paned windows
Switch to CFL bulbs
Keep your car maintained
Use your recycling bin
These are far more effective than "greening" your computing habits. - numb, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3Just because you're power supply is rated at 500 watts doesn't mean it draws 500 watts, only that it's capable. Get a UPS with a wattage display if you really want to know how much you are drawing at a given time. My workstation has a 500w power supply but it draws much less than that during heavy use, and even less when I leave the room and the monitors shut off.
