- matthekc, on 12/12/2008, -0/+25Can we get some specification between the good hackers often called white hats and the bad hackers, often called black hats and crackers? One group saves the Internet on a daily basis and the other does this *****!
- ileftfark, on 12/12/2008, -1/+21HACK THE PLANET!
- GeeksSpeakFont, on 12/12/2008, -0/+17that's terrible! i hope that the permit system is made more secure asap.
- eastwood24, on 12/12/2008, -1/+17Why do I keep reading these depressing stories? The human race is full of souless parasites.
- Annibal, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9Those are not hackers, are just *****!
- jpqsat, on 12/14/2008, -1/+7Why is it full of souless parasites? Because of you and me don't care about the planet when it's time to buy a new piece of furniture. We are all responsible, we are all to blame for those acts.
- Chaulis, on 12/14/2008, -0/+5A cyber criminal is just a criminal, something a hacker is not.
- middlecon, on 12/14/2008, -0/+5I'm sure the companies that benefitted from this considered these guys to have very white hats :(
- Velocity14, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5If you're assuaged to shock from articles like these, read Paul Hawken (his book Blessed Unrest is particularly well-formatted for beginners to the concept of environmentalism). Sure, there are a ton of people out there starving for some profit. But the massive movement of awareness is larger and more powerful than you think. Despite the fact that we're citizens against global capitalistic suits with imaginary money, the argument for a healthier life cycle for man is getting more praise than ever.
The best thing to do is get educated about this stuff and share the knowledge. Inform yourself of the health of the planet and figure out what you can do to participate in helping it -- whether it's paying attention to recycling a little bit more or involving yourself in community-based environmental projects. Who knows. Expose yourself to the possibilities. Bada-bing. - refader, on 12/14/2008, -0/+3I bet those companies were funded by American money.
- Rikkochet, on 12/14/2008, -1/+4To be fair, I'm sure people logging would say they're doing nothing different than mining or farming or fishing.
Just because we've been raised to hold "the Amazon rainforest" in a magical light doesn't mean they see it anything as their back yard.
I blame the companies for exploiting, but not the average worker. - Pheter, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1I recognise one of them!
- mikeymondavi, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Someone call Getting Gay with Kids and get them down there. That'll solve everything.
- duggdowncatisad, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1So was this really "hacking" or just old fashioned corruption that happens to involve the internet, e.g., government officials giving the logging companies admin accounts in exchange for bribes? The article doesn't say.
- Corrosionx, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1In Canada you just need friends in the government.
- jawagas, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1ahhhhhh yeeha, I'm going to expose myself to nature-conscious actions.

that's terrible. - Chaulis, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1What ever they did do to alter the records or somehow pretend to have permission to log the Amazon is a pretty terrible crime. They are destroying a natural resource for probably very little money. Something that doesn't grow back easily and has a constant net loss. So it is a pretty big crime.
- lornali, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1i only wish such ingenuity is channeled properly
- Corrosionx, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1They have so much government-"owned" lands and they let their friends log them all.
Tragedy of the commons. What were people thinking.... - tehchicken, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Who can suspended parliament until a better time.
- Wargasmic, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Get used to it.
- Velocity14, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1 "Pretending that somehow you'll change the world so that people don't do things like this is pie in the sky."
Tell that to all the hardworking, local environmentally concerned committees sprawled throughout the world. Tell them that their hard work somehow did not save native lands in South America. Tell them that their preservation of the wilderness was them pretending to save the world. Tell them that their hours of work to clean up after oil spills or polluted waterways did not in some way help their community. You don't remove greed or apathy from people. No. You fight back. You argue humanity against capitalism.
Just because there will always be greed and a power struggle doesn't mean we can simply sit back and let it happen. Our industrialized world is ruining local communities and it's a dangerous trek to unhealthy globalism if we lose the diversity within our systems. Sure, this has been happening since day one of human/industrial expansion. The difference is, today, we are confronted by it. We are concerned because of it. And we are wanting to change it.
Oil companies are polluting entire areas of foreign communities -- poisoning their water, rendering their farmlands useless, creating birth defects and ailments never before known to the locals. Valuable ecosystems are being destroyed -- and these systems are a vein in the complexity of life that is the planet. When the land is in stress, it affects all that is around it, animal and man alike. I personally do believe that business expansion and greed are the cause of this. Instead of investing time and money into renewable energy and long-term commitments to bail out humanity, there is an insane amount of struggle to keep drilling, cutting, devouring, plaguing. This is something I simply do not understand. This is greed -- we're not talkin' about "I wish I had a thousand bucks" greed, we're talking millions and millions of dollars these people receive for doing what it is they do. Who needs that much money? There comes a point in time where we have to remember that humanity is far more valuable than money.
Would you really, *really* want to turn your back away from the appalling acts done for these natural resources? Sure, we can't live without them, but surely we can find ways to make it more humane. What is being done to our planetary system is inhumane. We hurt the world, we hurt the people. The promotion of this wasteful life is done by capitalism and corporations, partially because it is now "convenient" and mostly because there is a lot of profit.
Technology is so embedded into mankind, of course we can't go back. (I never said I wasn't part of the problem. Certainly I am not perfect, either. The point is, I do what I can.) There are, however, better ways of coexisting consumerism and environmentalism. We've been on a good long path to create this for awhile.
There will always be people wanting to take the convenience of natural resources -- after all, it's what we've become accustomed to for over a hundred years. It will be hard as hell to revoke it. That's why no one is trying to. Environmentalism isn't about eradicating technology; you stated a goal of it yourself, even: "being responsible." We have to take responsibility for the actions we are putting onto the earth. The biggest problem here is that all the damage being done is from "the few" businessmen and the people being affected are "the masses" citizens across the world who have to deal with it without the financial, medical, and social help. There is something wrong with that concept. It needs to be changed.
Oh, and... your FYI statement... isn't that what I said?
"The best thing to do is get educated about this stuff and share the knowledge."
Oh hey, look at that. I did say it.
I tried to reinforce the concept that there is a conflict between citizens and corporations. For you to take such concern over a colloquial jest of my imagery for corporations is absolutely silly. You attempted to pounce all over it with a catty rebuttal, but it is structurally weak for being based off assumptions of what I was really trying to address. But hey, since you were so offended by it, I'll try to back up my statement anyway.
So, what part of my "global capitalistic suits with imaginary money" thing is not true?
1.) There are people in charge of obtaining and distributing these natural resources (products) to civilizations all around the world. Global.
2.) This current gathering and exchange system is owned, operated, and economically controlled by those people stated above. Capitalistic.
3.) Psh. Everyone knows businessmen wear suits. Suits.
4.) Money was created to aid the barter system and be more fair for a civilization... roughly. Cool, yeah. That's fantastic. Today, this system has become corrupt. People can withdraw money they do not have (credit cards) and borrow obscene amounts of digits in exchange for a physical possession (loans). People with millions of dollars don't have it all physically sitting in a safe like McDuck. It's a number in an electronic system that allows them to claim they are a millionaire and exchange some of that number for consumption. Imaginary money. (This could be argued more vigorously, but it's snowing outside and I want to partake in this monumental Portland event.)
Congratulations on setting yourself back. Your inherent doubt of mankind is renders you apathetic to change or action. This world isn't just about you, or one group of people, or one sector of the planet... It's about all of us. Your acceptance of "that's the way it goes" sets you back from understanding the connectivity and power we have as humans. Perhaps you should re-evaluate the potential environmentalism has in this age of ever growing concern of "how are we going to survive?"
All that set aside, I certainly hope you enjoy your life and what it is you do. I know I enjoy mine, trying to save the world and all. And really, the very least we can ever do for ourselves is to enjoy it. We're the lucky ones who are benefiting from this capitalistic game. We aren't the ones who are struggling to enjoy life. This motivates me to empathize and attempt to help. A lot of people aren't willing or capable of thinking outside of themselves. Choose your destiny, I guess. Sit back and watch it happen in a lackadaisical manner, or get up and move with it.
So ends the rant. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to wake up my mind this morning. Cheers! - fluxion, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1cyber criminals killed my best friend
- Baderade, on 12/14/2008, -0/+0I'm going with 'funded by consumer money'
- Baderade, on 12/14/2008, -1/+1First of all, abuse of the word 'hacker' aside, this is probably just corruption. A cyber criminal is just a criminal.....a crime is a crime. I don't call a guy that gets in a football fight a football criminal....
Second of all, let me just 'hack' into your PC. That's bad?
What if I raped a family member.....? I'm pretty sure that would be worse.
Hyperbole doesn't really help. - bindasj, on 02/17/2009, -1/+1Yeah this is great.
Log truck safety available http://logtruck.info it's important to drive safely. - karmastic, on 12/14/2008, -1/+1Hackers are obviously gunning for world domination. Enough war on terror, time for war on greenpeace hackers.
- Baderade, on 12/14/2008, -1/+0Congratulations on holding that movement back. "Global Capitalistic Suits with imaginary money".
You don't un-invent technology, you don't ever remove greed or apathy from people, you just temper it. Pretending that somehow you'll change the world so that people don't do things like this is pie in the sky. There have always been 'suits', there has always been someone doing things illegally, there always will be. Just like politics, prostitution, and drugs.
The best thing you can do is phrase your goals more in line with being responsible than creating this persona of wallstreet/banking/corporate greed that's an enemy. Create an image of intemperance, otherwise its just propaganda that works like 'hairy palms' or 'soulless reds'.
Granted most pollution comes directly and indirectly from corporate waste of varying kinds. Consumer, or production. But many of these corporations fund the groups that are being responsible about the environment; so unless you're living in a freaking hut and powering your PC with a non-corporate produced stationary cycle and battery, you're part of that 'problem'. You have to have a paycheck, and if you don't, you either inherited it, or you made your buck before, and have the luxury of sitting back.
And FYI: If you inform yourself about things, you probably already were open minded enough to consider it anyway, inform other people. - Cheesepuffly, on 12/14/2008, -2/+0In Soviet Russia logs hack hackers and move forest through people!
