- johnwastaken, on 06/10/2008, -6/+86wow... super easy. all i have to do is spend 3000$ on parts, 100+ hours of labour, form lasting relationships with people who own large fry cookers, refine the oil myself, and essentially eradicate all resale value of my car.
best part is, if i run outta gas, i can just go to the super market and pick some up for 10$/gallon! simple! why isn't everyone doing this?!? - inactive, on 06/10/2008, -10/+90But will it power my flux capacitor?
- RorObSN, on 06/10/2008, -7/+78My car runs purely off dude power.
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -4/+60Pffff my VW runs off of used fake tan spray and hair gel. Of course I live in NJ where the supply is plentiful.
- deva14, on 06/10/2008, -1/+56Bio fuels are getting a bad rap lately with the food crisis and all, but I think it's important to make a distinction between growing crops for bio fuel and the sort of recycling/reusing that Brad Whipple's describing here. This seems like a really great way of getting a second use out of fryer oil - and that's one resource we've got plenty of in North America these days.
Enjoyed this article! Currently car-less, but I'd love to get an old diesel Jetta someday and figure this out. - MadEnvoy, on 06/10/2008, -1/+45After this catches on I can see "Free vegetable oil" being not so free.
- maddvibe, on 06/10/2008, -0/+36I've seen quite a few people do this successfully, but be careful you can really damage your engine if you do it wrong or use bad oil.
- jlj1958, on 06/10/2008, -2/+34Apparently their server runs on vegetable oil, too. Down.
- ABashore, on 06/10/2008, -4/+30my 91 honda civic runs off of hopes and dreams.
- TomK88, on 06/10/2008, -4/+29Time is money. I can't afford to spend this much time running my car on vegetable oil because my time is worth more than what I would save.
- upick, on 06/10/2008, -3/+284. Processing the oil.
Good idea but who's got time, space, and equipment to do this? - DocHoliday22, on 06/10/2008, -0/+21I work for Shell and I await the day we use this method permanently so I would say "***** you" to Shell - the most evil company on Earth.
Heh, I should print this out and stick it on the Staff Board at Shell... - 3Den, on 06/10/2008, -1/+19Anyone.. what happens to prices when demand increases and supply stays the same?
Any wild guesses? - mattsx, on 06/10/2008, -0/+17my 89 subaru runs of the screams of children
- Benjamin10, on 06/10/2008, -1/+18I've been thinking about converting my old mercedes for a long time now. I have some friends who have made the change and I think I'll take the plunge. Thanks for this article! I'm re-inspired...
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -0/+15does it interfere with the cctv cameras or something?
- borichka, on 06/10/2008, -1/+15how do you filter out the toxic resins from all those crushed up dudes?
- davidmiller72, on 06/10/2008, -3/+15Anyone have figures on how many people are out there running these grease vehicles? Of the ones I've heard of (except for the author, Brad Whipple) they've all been kayak teams and hippie tour buses. Basically a bunch of people co-oping, as Brad suggests.
- LeRenard, on 06/10/2008, -5/+17Does it bother anyone else that our diet is so abysmal that you can run cars on the waste products?
- Vindicoth, on 06/10/2008, -1/+13What does Jay Z use to power his DeLorean?
Jiggawatts.
(Ba-doom-pshhh!) - mediaphile, on 06/10/2008, -4/+15This works right now because ethanol hasn't yet been fully adopted. In some areas, restaurants are being paid for their waste oil by companies that refine the oil and turn it around for a profit. There are people that are now stealing the oil from restaurants that used to have to pay people to haul it away. Once ethanol becomes a major commodity there's no way this solution will continue to work.
- gn0stik, on 06/10/2008, -0/+11You can build a setup for refining it out of an old hot water heater pretty cheaply. Check it out at instructables. Problem is, a lot of people are doing it now, and it's a lot harder to get than this article is letting on. Make sure you have a source before you start building a refining setup.
- itspuddingtime, on 06/10/2008, -0/+11$
- damonic, on 06/10/2008, -1/+11It will only get you to 87 mph. Sorry.
- slvrbullet87, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10Does everything have to be a conspiricy caused by big oil? Have you thought the reason the dont have pumps with vegitable oil is because of how few cars run on it. Do you think they are not putting in leaded gasoline pumps because they are trying to get you to buy newer cars?
- insertAliasHere, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10If you don't like Shell, quit. I'm not defending them, just wondering: Why would you work for a company that you despise? If it's the most evil company on Earth, aren't you contributing to that evil?
- Shagmire, on 06/10/2008, -2/+11you don't live in your mom's basement?
- gn0stik, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10He smokes the resin.
- SteelFrog, on 06/10/2008, -0/+9Ethanol.
- thesink, on 06/10/2008, -0/+9My 87 Turcell runs off of my own sense of self-satisfaction.
- Wornstrom, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10If I am not mistaken, tt is illegal in the US too, to run a car purely on your own fuel without paying fuel tax of some sort on it. They have diesel that is designed for 'farm use' that they put a red dye into... same stuff basically but it is taxed differently.
- sockpuppets, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9I overclocked some canola oil, it worked for a little while.
- Chairboy, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9I assume, then, that you abide?
- domfosnz, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9That is what would worry me. Then it would be super expensive in the long run.
- raysaagar, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9still stuck with lightning there.
- coyote1284, on 06/10/2008, -2/+10Sorry, Vegetable Oil is not quite efficient enough to generate 1.21 gigawatts.
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8no not yet, the best this is to go in the future and get the updated technology
- GreenLynx, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8My 85 De Lorean uses nuclear fusion of household waste to generate one point twenty-one jigowatts of power for the flux capacitor.
- McShr3dd3r, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7Illegal in the UK? Say What?
- dusanmal, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6It isn't free anymore in most places. Owners of the used oil are now paid for it and companies emerged to process it. Hence, not only it is not free anymore but if you take it you'll likely be accused of theft.
However, interesting recycling system have emerged and there are even test facilities to make usable bio-diesel from meat-processing waste at 50-60$ per barrel... - nerdfarm, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6I have time, space, and equipment to do this. I run my '05 diesel Chevy truck on used oil from a local steak house, and it's not all that hard or time consuming. My whole setup, including pump, filters, and storage tank, takes up about the same space as my truck. I would guess most people who drive diesel work trucks can find that much space. And I think dukeofurl has this issue confused with converting veggie oil into biodiesel. I run straight vegetable oil, and I don't use any chemicals at all. I'd also remind duke that some of the chemicals under your sink can probably also make you blind if you're not cautious.
- sockpuppets, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7He lives in yours.
- Shagmire, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7idiots! it runs on trash
- gn0stik, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6It's not hard to figure out, you can refine it in your garage, and the byproduct is particulates and glycerine. You can further use the byproducts for compost and making soap, or other products if you are so inclined.

- thedarkwolf, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5But ethanol wont, not from corn and the stuff they are using now. It's not efficient enough and there is no way to create enough ethanol to power a very large scale distribution of cars, there is not enough space for the corn.
I like the whole idea of recycling the oil, but until we come up with another alternative fuel, or something more efficient than corn ethanol, don't expect it to be fully adopted. - ikcilabd, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5my 95 bronco runs off the road and hits deer frequently
- Tenlow, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5It's already not free in my town. That coupled with the cost of processing it, it's still cheaper than diesel but not so much once you factor in your own time.
