- Chainheart, on 08/17/2008, -7/+244I masturbate with a plug-in back massager to a 60 inch plasma screen which has my PC plugged in with two ATI 4870x2s running in it powered by a 2000w power supply playing the nude Alyx mod at 2560×1600 while my cats electric litterbox cleans her ***** and my dog's bark is halted by an electric collar
- muchachoburacho, on 08/17/2008, -12/+228"Vampire energy is estimated to cost U.S. consumers $3 billion a year." That's ten dollars per person per year. I wouldn't call that an amazing amount of electricity when i pay 50-60 dollars a month.
- sockpuppets, on 08/17/2008, -4/+166Dad?
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -8/+160So that's what the inside of a vampire looks like.
- ninephoenixes, on 08/17/2008, -6/+119People still use VCRs?
- jec68, on 08/17/2008, -8/+88I refuse to unplug my eight plasma televisions.
- chrissku, on 08/17/2008, -5/+76People in Pennsylvania always bitch and moan about vampires. Try moving to California where you have to deal with Zombies.
- karkin, on 08/17/2008, -7/+70I read this as "How Much Energy are Vampires Costing You?"
- UnaClocker, on 08/17/2008, -21/+68What a load of crap! None of these numbers are accurate! 311watts for a computer in STANDBY?!? My computer (I use a Kill-A-Watt) draws FIVE, JUST 5 watts in standby. And less than 100watts when it's ON.. I don't think it could hit 311 watts if it were on fire.
The plasma TV pulling 1400+ watts?! BS.. That's nearly enough to trip the breaker in most homes. That's more than a strong vacuum cleaner will pull! It's more than the average electrical outlet is rated for.
And the other numbers.. Well why the hell are they comparing ON to STANDBY numbers in the same article? That's useless information. Compare standby to standby, and on to on, or don't bother comparing anything.
Kill-A-Watt FTW.. - ChristianDKSD, on 08/17/2008, -18/+63how much energy are vampires costing me?
- OrangeTide, on 08/17/2008, -4/+36it's your own fault. reduce the number of toys. improve the insulation of your home, and regulate the heating and cooling of your home to a wider range of temperatures.
- Handonam, on 08/17/2008, -3/+32(Hand + Brain) -> Masturbate = power saver.
Saves energy. Prob doesn't save you from the fact that you live alone in a dark room fapping away to thoughts of a better life. - jmpeagle, on 08/17/2008, -4/+33what did one lesbian vampire say to the other lesbian vampire?
See you next month. - thallium205, on 08/17/2008, -5/+33Buried as inaccurate.
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/07/29/how-much-does ... - Calculon, on 08/17/2008, -4/+31How about companies make devices that are smart enough to power down completely? I don't want to unplug my whole house everytime I need to leave. Do we still need a red LED to tell us a device is off?
- mikebb79, on 08/17/2008, -7/+32yeah I agree. We're seeing a lot of this type of research because everyone's freaking about the economy. I'm not rich but saving a few bucks a year doesn't excite me too much.
- jdmcadam, on 08/17/2008, -1/+23Something about the term 'average' has escaped you.
- teh_techie, on 08/17/2008, -2/+22No, that's why there should be a battery in them like the CMOS battery in your computer...
- bearcat8543, on 08/17/2008, -4/+24and hippies
- teh_techie, on 08/17/2008, -2/+18Kilowatt hours != Watts. Someone's not thinking! If it seems WAY out of whack to you, you're looking at it wrong.
- whyufail, on 08/17/2008, -2/+17If it's the average, he could be paying much less D8
- strypersarmy, on 08/17/2008, -2/+16i do just in case... i find old porn.
- Krumm, on 08/17/2008, -2/+16It did look suspiciously on the high side!
The best thing is to do as mentioned a few times above, and in the debunking, buy or borrow a 'kill-a-watt' or similar and just test stuff around the house.
The difference between an older PC and a new one can be interesting and may change your setup for a 24 Hr rig (new Core vs old Athlon can warrant the cost of a new setup & still save money over a year or two).
The worst one I found was the microwave using 35w when doing nothing but keep the time! - nothugo, on 08/17/2008, -0/+13It's people like you...
- FlyinWhee, on 08/17/2008, -3/+16There's another issue that's not highlighted here, that made the rounds in computers a few years ago: When you completely turn on or off a device, there's a small peak of power that gets through, and this alone causes quite a bit of damage to electronics.
So for example, if you have a Plasma TV, your Plasma will most likely die a whole lot sooner if you unplug it all the time, making this $160 a year you pay to keep in stand by pretty cheap - over the cost of having to buy a new one, say, 2 years sooner than you would have. - Riffraffs, on 08/17/2008, -8/+20NO, it's 159.76 while it is switched off. more when it's playing.
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 08/17/2008, -3/+15Sockpuppets wins the internet for the week
- Unknown038, on 08/17/2008, -4/+15especially considering how much of a bitch it would be to repeatedly plug and unplug everything in the house that has a standby
buried for people bringing up this stupid concept yet again - Stevanoski, on 08/17/2008, -1/+12Also, how much mercury will be introduced to the environment if every convetional light bulb was switched to the energy efficient, long life gas light bulbs?! Now that is something worth knowing.
- tnoy, on 08/17/2008, -0/+11They don't, but they're plugged in and are using standby power--which is the focus of this image.
- hitkaiser, on 08/17/2008, -5/+15its less about the buck saving (incentive for people) and more about reducing the demand for more supply of electricity which is the difficult bit
- kalleanka, on 08/17/2008, -2/+12AAAA+++++++ STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE JOKE!!!! WOULD LISTEN TO IT AGAIN
- CdnPhoto, on 08/17/2008, -1/+11I tried out a plasma with a kill-a-watt. It came out to 1wh when in standby. The current crop of plasmas are rated as energy star and don't draw anywhere near that much power as described.
- tehcobra, on 08/17/2008, -1/+11There are vampires in California, that's one thing I could never stomach about Santa Carla.
- badenglishihave, on 08/17/2008, -0/+9Why don't you let me unplug them for you? Then I will take them home.
- DivisibleByZero, on 08/17/2008, -0/+9What's my TV doing during "active standby mode"? just waiting for me to push the button on the remote?
- borez, on 08/17/2008, -6/+15Digg me down all you want, but do you really think that me not leaving my TV on standby is really gonna make up for this:

Hilarious train of thought, you really are being sucked into the naive Green machine. - nickstang, on 08/17/2008, -2/+11Do you guys remember your dad's computer from the 1990s? Most likely, he had his monitor sitting atop a surge protector device lined with power switches labeled: monitor, computer, printer, aux.. and a master switch?
Once lcd's became popular or CRT's got to be bohemteth in size, you stopped seeing these manufactured. You can rarely find one of these relics at the thrift shop for cheap. Very useful to hit the master switch right before you leave the house.
I CAN'T find a single manufacturer that makes these anymore. They hide all that wired ugliness and give you access to turn each plug on or off seperatly. - jasonliman, on 08/17/2008, -1/+9There is a bigger picture.
As a whole city, there are stores, public area, restaurants, and such. The amount of energy they use is enormous. And everyone is counted to the outcome of electricity we use.
You might think you only pay twenty or thirty monthly, but the public transportation you use, street light, TV productions, electronic stores are a lot more than the monthly bill. - ap44, on 08/17/2008, -3/+11I really hope there are some digg users who masturbate to real porn not just video games V_V
- shank2001, on 08/17/2008, -2/+10Sure digg me down, but that does not make it true. Even a running refrigerator does not use 1400 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. If you really want to find something to make the world a better place there are better fights to fight.... one example...lets get traffic lights timed correctly. Imagine how much fuel that would save if you didnt have to stop every block for a red light?! WAY more than 3 billion dollars a year. Think about it.
- joeydoo, on 08/17/2008, -0/+8The monitor. Turn your LCD backlight down.. that'll save a boatloat of power as it's draws almost all the power in an LCD. Most people have them up at 70-80%.. that's completely unnecessary. In fact if you get an LCD calibrated, you get the best blacks when it's down around 20%. At that point the power draw on a 40incheer will go from 250 watts to 100 watts.
- minoss, on 08/17/2008, -5/+13If you haven't noticed, huge exaggeration is typical of people putting out info like this.
- JakeyG14, on 08/17/2008, -0/+7You're online, man...find new porn.
- sting87, on 08/17/2008, -4/+11What the hell is a VCR?
- SteveLRowe, on 08/17/2008, -4/+11*cough* *cough* -*****- *cough*
- shank2001, on 08/17/2008, -3/+10Okay so let me get this straight, you want a battery to keep the clock etc. going when the power is off to the device... fine... but you still need to recharge the battery when the power is supplied again. There is no net energy savings to having something powered by a battery while you unplug the device, in fact using a battery is actually slightly LESS efficient as charging is never 100% efficient. Better would be to shut off the lit displays that most clocks have on these devices. That said, the clocks are not what are taking the most power. It is the remote control sensor watching for a signal to power on the device that takes most of it. Most people find that the extra convenience of having remote capabilities is more than worth the extra 25 cents per month it costs them.
- shank2001, on 08/17/2008, -2/+8You are an idiot if you think a plasma takes 160 dollars of electricity a year SWITCHED off! Use your brain a bit before believing everything you see on the internet. I would say the average plasma costs 15-25 dollars a year switched off. Do the math for yourself. Even the average refrigerator does not cost 160 dollars a year, and that is including the time it is running!
