- tbk123, on 06/27/2008, -3/+47i'm soo glad the nurse in the pic is not wearing crocs.
- skipdog172, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3What is it with nurses and crocs?
I work at a hospital and see them constantly on nurses but I never can understand what they have to do with nursing.- dgaspard, on 06/27/2008, -3/+8You walk all day and they're comfortable....
- justdan, on 06/27/2008, -1/+14They are on their feet all day. Crocs are light and comfortable.
With that said Crocs are the most horrible shoes ever made. I hate them they are ugly.
- veriix, on 06/27/2008, -6/+1Why, because then you couldn't jack it to her?
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1Thank god I'm no where near any used crocs, I can't imagine them smelling anything better than fresh *****.
- cambob76, on 06/27/2008, -4/+1I saw a guy wearing crocs one day. That is so gay. But then again, a gay guy probably wouldn't wear those if you paid him.
- oldebloke, on 06/27/2008, -4/+0Why do you assume she is nurse, or even in the medical field?
- webman77, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1LOL.
- skipdog172, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3What is it with nurses and crocs?
- bstory, on 06/27/2008, -6/+15I think around 1 hour should fill my tank
- ethanpack, on 06/27/2008, -2/+3That's six figures annual salary - quite livable! I can't complain *too* much, but have to work 1.5 hours to fill up a 16 gallon tank.
The crazy thing is that I'm about $300 away from my monthly budget for Gas and Tolls equaling my mortgage payment! :o) - digitallysick, on 06/27/2008, -5/+6You guys are both liars, or CEOs, or both
- krisp9751, on 06/27/2008, -2/+2$110,000 a year salary; assuming you only work 40 hours a week would be $55 an hour (also assuming you work a full week every week, which doesn't happen.) The second guy who would have to work 1.5 hours would make 73000 dollars a year. Of course I didn't factor in taxes but I would definitely say that is not quite a CEO salary.
- zoom1928, on 06/27/2008, -2/+1Wow, you're bad at math. I make about $60/hour (which isn't much above average for an engineer in the Seattle area), and I spent $450 on gas last year according to my nice American Express end of the year report. This year because of increased prices, that amount might be as much as $600. That means I work about ten hours per year to pay for gas. That's less than one hour per month to pay for gas.
The price of gas just isn't a concern for people that drive sensibly. I don't waste gas like many people, so this is a nonissue. - rnelsonee, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1Yeah, the CNN calculator is off if you put in your gross salary - I'm at 1.6 hrs to fill my tank and I use premium gas. But you pay gas with post-tax dollars, so taking my 'net' pay, minus 401(k) and healthcare *****, it's 3 hours. Which is a higher amount than I would've thought, so, good article.
But yeah, the OPs are not necessarily liars. Some of us diggers are in our 30's and have good post-college jobs for 10 years now. - zedtechus, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0I have an Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel which takes 88 litres to fill the tank but I work like an SAP consultant at 65$/hour so I have to work around 1.75 hours to fill it.
- ronar, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Six figures are not difficult to earn. One of my closest friends made 120k last year as an employee of a small (8 employees) marketing company. I just finished my degree in economics and will be on roughly 100k in my first job when I start this summer and we are both 24. Making six figures is just barely comfortable.
- bstory, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Of course you are making the assumption that everybody has a huge gas tank - ever think that I might ride a motorcycle?
- bilbravo, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7CEOs don't have to work an hour to fill up a tank... unless you're talking about their private jet. $50 an hour (gas is about $50 a tank here) is about 100k a year, which isn't *a lot*, depending on where you live.
- ngmcs8203, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Depends on how big your tank is. Your 11 gallon tank is not my 25 gallon tank. It costs me $115 to fill up my tank... so 4hrs of work. Sigh.
- BESTenemy, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Can I borrow your moped once you're done filling it up?
- bdbr, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1Pre-tax, maybe. If you have a six-figure income, the government will take roughly half of that, so you're looking at two hours income. Which still isn't too bad.
- ethanpack, on 06/27/2008, -2/+3That's six figures annual salary - quite livable! I can't complain *too* much, but have to work 1.5 hours to fill up a 16 gallon tank.

- adamdaly, on 06/27/2008, -2/+12i work for a week to cover the cost of fuel for a months driving to and from work.
- theutopian, on 06/27/2008, -1/+11Time for a new job.
- dafragsta, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2Yeah, that sound you hear is the soul being sucked from your body.
- zoom1928, on 06/27/2008, -4/+1Then why did you decide on living so far from work? You have no one to blame but yourself. Of course most people these days don't recognize personal responsibility so they blame Bush instead of the person responsible, themselves.
- cathl, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1You've completely oversimplified the issue. The cost of housing near jobs can be just as prohibitively expensive as gasoline. Most people do not have a guarantee of job security, and should they loose their job, they may not be able to easily relocate for a new one. Most of all, most people did not expect the price of transportation to rise so high in such a short time.
- xero9, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1Well aren't you a dick.. Take my situation. Living in ths city isn't an option. Houses here are $400k+ for a ***** hole. My only choice is to obviously move outside of the city where a nicer house will only cost me maybe $215-230. True I'm paying more in gas, but like I'm going to get pre-approved for a 400k house on my salary.
- staticneuron, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Taking taxes into account, one days worth of work can satisfy my gas needs for a month. But I do have a small car and I don't drive far to get to work (16-25 min).
- theutopian, on 06/27/2008, -1/+11Time for a new job.
- johnmatias, on 06/27/2008, -7/+2This is the kind of thinking that makes cutting yourself seem like a good idea.

- dafragsta, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Maybe he has a plugin hybrid.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/27/2008, -2/+4I drive a Prius (about 450 miles a tank), and take the bus to work...is that so hard to believe someone spends less than $50 a month on gas?
and the coughTHINKcough isn't funny.

- BoneStamp, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Either you make as much as me or you have a really small gas tank. (it's a joke people, but you can digg me down as usual)
- colasrtney, on 06/27/2008, -8/+19What do you mean hours? Bury me for being exceedingly wealthy and having a helper monkey type this for me.
- FTWmovin2canada, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1I'm also exceedingly rich... and I'm needing one of those helper monkeys. Please have your people tell my people where they can acquire one.
- minigig, on 06/27/2008, -6/+4*****
- Chairboy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+29About 2 hours per tank. Amount of time saved by not walking the 350-400 miles. Considering that it'd take about 120 hours to walk that same distance, it's not a horrible trade-off.
And no, city dwellers, we can't all live half a block from everything we need. I'd love to live at the airport where my plane lives, for instance, but can't.- grantmoore3d, on 06/27/2008, -2/+6Does your plane happen to be a Transformer?
- hansonc, on 06/27/2008, -3/+2Neighborhoods near airports are usually pretty cheap since people don't want planes flying over their house all the time....
You still choose to live that far from work.- BoneStamp, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Usually, but not always. Look at Chicago, Toronto, Boston...etc.
- beesaretasty, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0Is that 2 hours per tank for your plane? Or were you just rubbing it in that you have a plane for no damn reason whatsoever?
- Chairboy, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Oh lords of Kobol no, I wish. It's more like 8.5 hours of work for one tank of gas. That's why I can't fly as much as I'd like to.
- beesaretasty, on 06/29/2008, -0/+0Ha. That's a pisser. I do like your time to gas price trade-off though. People don't tend to factor that in when talking about public transport or walking. Luckily for me, I can bike to work faster than driving there on most days. Sucks when the 5 o'clock thunderstorm rolls in though.
- Chairboy, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Oh lords of Kobol no, I wish. It's more like 8.5 hours of work for one tank of gas. That's why I can't fly as much as I'd like to.
- Homerr, on 06/27/2008, -2/+41.77 hours to fill my tank, and it's a Civic.
- Bromskloss, on 06/27/2008, -0/+56With modern gas pumps, it takes just a minute and not much work.
- sepultura, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4I see what you did there.
- RajAtWork, on 06/27/2008, -3/+1arrgh. About an hour.
- pixeldust, on 06/27/2008, -3/+210, I ride a bike to school and work.
- leerayIG88, on 06/27/2008, -2/+8Well..next time I see you, i will run you over with my SUV.
- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2The jealousy tables have turned.
- KMartSheriff, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4And then I'll run you over with my compact car.
- leerayIG88, on 06/27/2008, -2/+8Well..next time I see you, i will run you over with my SUV.
- zbeast, on 06/27/2008, -4/+4half hour... tank size is 15gallons.
- GeauxLSU, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2A little over 1 hour and that tank almost lasts a month (my car is on the article's least expensive list and I live very close to work)....Karma is a bitch for all you folks living far away from work and driving the gas guzzlers!
- ngmcs8203, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2What does Karma have to do with the fact that there are a lot of commuters in the world? Some of us would rather take the money that would go in to a 2 bedroom/2 bath condo and put it into a 5bedroom/4bath home. A 30min commute isn't giving me any bad juju.
- bdbr, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1I bought a house a half-mile from work. Then they moved me to a different office. Everyone has a different situation, so maybe you should take it a little easy with the self-congratulation...for the sake of karma, if nothing else.
- BOFH2, on 06/27/2008, -4/+1 I am spending approximately an extra $1040 per year on gas. So, I don't get to eat out as much.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1You can eat out all you want. Just not at a restaurant. PENIS!
- AzraDarkness, on 06/27/2008, -1/+0$65/ week..about 4.6 hrs..18 hrs a month. damn..i dont like my van anymore.
- chriskzoo, on 06/27/2008, -4/+2$45 bucks to fill it - so about 50 minutes.
- Xel565, on 06/27/2008, -0/+22From the Article: "The math should be easy from here, if you work an 8 hour day, 40 hours a week you work 1080 hours a year."
Let's see typical work week = 5 days
8 hours/day * 5 days/week = 40 hours/ week (check)
40 hours/week * 52 weeks/year = 2080 hours/year (whoops guess it's not so easy huh?)- bdbr, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Its probably a typo; I doubt someone would do all that math and be exactly 1,000 off.
The math also assumes no vacation.
- bdbr, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Its probably a typo; I doubt someone would do all that math and be exactly 1,000 off.
- xGORDOx, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8I commute on a Honda Ruckus which gets a 100mpg and hold 1.3 gallons.
So... 10 minutes?- cambob76, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I'm 270lbs, my Ruckus only gets 85mpg :( .
- xGORDOx, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2Cool, a fellow Ruckster!
Check out http://totalruckus.com/phpBB2/index.php if you haven't already. - ngmcs8203, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1cambob76... is that you? http://www.fugly.com/media/IMAGES/Random/super-fat ...
- cambob76, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1No... maybe I've let myself go, but not that far... a lot of it's muscle actually.
- xGORDOx, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2Cool, a fellow Ruckster!
- cambob76, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I'm 270lbs, my Ruckus only gets 85mpg :( .
- gimmeslack12, on 06/27/2008, -2/+3$60 per tank so that's 1.5 hours of work for me.
I'm rich Bitch!- litkaj, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5Not really, $40/hr is only about $83K/year which isn't all that much depending on what part of the country you live in and what you do.
- witcompe, on 06/27/2008, -2/+7According to your profile, you live in SFO. $40/hr is NOTHING in SFO or any sizable city in the US for that matter. In NYC that would be considered a little above average salary for a white collar job. So no, you are not rich.... bitch.
- gimmeslack12, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Not a fan of the Chapelle Show I can see. Lighten up.
- theutopian, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Thank God I own a Honda Fit. Fuel efficiency is great. But it still hurts that it now costs $40 to fill a 10 gallon tank.
- hughesj919, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2And I imagine it hurts some to drive a Honda Fit too.
- jarjarwang, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4I only fill up every 6 or 7 weeks. We have a trains in the city.
- 4thcage, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1How many hours of work to pay for the train tickets?
- andy3109, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Wow...surprisingly not a lot at all. Even with $7 gas only a few hours.
- cindya, on 06/27/2008, -3/+3zero.
my bike is fueled by me, eating vegetables & beer.
How may diggers don't own cars &/or bike most everywhere?- Tenlow, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I would bike everywhere but my main commute is 18 miles each way with a 900 foot elevation change and it goes over 110 regularly during the summer. Not gonna risk death to save a few bucks.
- booyahbitch, on 06/27/2008, -2/+0Uhhh!!! I can only imagine the gas that Cabbage and Beer would produce!!!!!
- elementop, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I was hoping to do that (bike to/from work) this summer, but I took a second job flight instructing, so I need to get quickly from my day job to my "I can't believe I'm actually getting paid to do this!" job. :(
- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0Get a scooter.
- maddskillz, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3It costs me about 3 hours of work to drive 1000km...I really can't complain
- Scottamus, on 06/27/2008, -0/+8FTFA:
"The math should be easy from here, if you work an 8 hour day, 40 hours a week you work 1080 hours a year. Average out the total amount of gas you buy for a year, divide by 1080 and there you have it. Then add that number to the one you found through the Edmunds calculator and that should give you the total number of hours you need to work to support your car."
Sorry but 1080 hours a year is 27 weeks. Most of us poor folk have to work a little more than that pendejo. 40 hrs x 50 weeks = 2000 which is a simple number I use for calculating hours a year. (+/- holidays) I can only hope he meant 2080.- Antixian, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1really it should be times 52 weeks ya digg?
- asskicker32, on 06/27/2008, -1/+375 minutes and my car has a17 gallon tank.
- KloroFormd, on 06/27/2008, -0/+13One week.
(2 tanks, 19 gallon and 18 gallon. Part-time minimum wage job.)
Lulz. Sucks being in school.- diggit83, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Holy ***** someone honest.....
Less than 10% of the country make more than$120,000 and yet most of the posters here seem to be at roughly that or higher.
- diggit83, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Holy ***** someone honest.....
- grantmoore3d, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4About 3.5 hours a week, given that it cuts my travel time by about an hour (if using public transit instead), I'd say that it's good enough for me.
- polarbobbear, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Well, I guess none. Because I live in Europe and don't have a car. And I'm really happy about that.
- leerayIG88, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Don't have a car huh? Whats gonna happen to you when zombies start chasing you? Run? Good luck with that....
- screamokid, on 06/27/2008, -2/+46.24 hours..... i hate u bmw :( (yet i love it)
cant wait till college is over then its like 45 minutes for a tank- hansonc, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4you're driving a BMW in college? You're probably that kid that everyone hates but is only willing to hangout with because they can mooch off of you.
- Twee, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2Who knows, he might have an used 1993 BMW he bought for $4000. Don't automatically assume that he's driving a new one!
- digitallysick, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Same here, you must get paid more than me, cost me 62.00 to fill up the bmw
- saranagati, on 06/27/2008, -0/+445 minutes? Straight out of college it will be more like 2.5 hours.
- brianrwalters, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2Yup... $65~ to fill up the BMW in L.A.
But I fill only about 1x a month (biking to work rules).
- hansonc, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4you're driving a BMW in college? You're probably that kid that everyone hates but is only willing to hangout with because they can mooch off of you.
- minorthreat, on 06/27/2008, -1/+52 hour for a 15 gallon tank. Thank goodness I live close enough to work that I only have to fill up every 3 weeks.
- BradMW, on 06/27/2008, -3/+10Is this including or excluding the unpaid-overtime from my soul-destroying office job?
- ICANSTANDIT, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Was just going to make comment on that original math. Beat me to it! 2080 has been the standard for years. Less leave or sick time, obviously. Well done! Guess those other folks can't do basic math.
- hansonc, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2About 6 minutes. But then again I'm filling with CNG at $0.64/gas gallon equivalent and laughing at all the suckers putting $100 in their Expeditions and F350 trucks.
- djdingo, on 06/27/2008, -0/+19I sold my car for gas money.
- dreadlocks, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Only have to work 15 mins to fill my motorcycle up, lasts me about a week of commuting around.. sounds good to me :-)
- digitallysick, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Cost me about $62.00 to fill up, I make about $100 a day before tax. So i would say a little over 8 hours. The tank lasts a week and a few days, i have about a 30 mile commute
- Twee, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1So you make $8 an hour?
- digitallysick, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1after tax, and health benefits come out of my check, it comes out to about 8 an hour =(
- Twee, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1So you make $8 an hour?
- thebza451, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9WOW there sure are a LOT of people here making more than $60 an hour, that's amazing i didn't know i was around so many doctors and lawyers and celebrity actors and sports stars
- altrux, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0a lot of diggers are consultants, specifically IT consultants. that means a lot of us are paying for gas pre-tax, which really helps.
- thebza451, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2i AM an IT consultant, where the ***** my money at?
- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0thebza451: Same here. Show me the money (that I am apparently owed)
- gavin422, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6$60/hour = ~$124,000 a year, so upper-middle class. Not unheard of, especially if your spouse is employed too.
- diggerpleez, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Yes, because only doctors, lawyers, celebrities, and sports stars make 60/hour! lol
You don't have an actual career do you? - booyahbitch, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2Information Security consultant...make $170,000 per year. ***** being a Dr. You don't get AIDS from a server!
- altrux, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0a lot of diggers are consultants, specifically IT consultants. that means a lot of us are paying for gas pre-tax, which really helps.
- evilbob333, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2A hell of a lot less than what I need to pay my taxes.
- MasterEvilAce, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0According to a lot of people who are able to bike everywhere, it's your own fault your taxes are so much higher than they need to be. Try earning less.
- SpinStar, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I spend $25 a week on gas, which is about half a tank depending on what the price is. It helps me to make better transportation choices throughout the week--if I know I want to drive 50 miles on Saturday, I will limit my driving on other days of the week. It's not a foolproof plan, but it ensures I won't overspend on gas and encourages me to be more proactive about other forms of transportation.
- cambob76, on 06/27/2008, -1/+420 minutes... Honda Ruckus!
- itsthemechanic, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Ruckus FTW!
- GlitchEnzo, on 06/27/2008, -2/+5Hmm, I walk a half mile to work everyday, so zero! :-P
