- Bromskloss, on 06/27/2008, -0/+56With modern gas pumps, it takes just a minute and not much work.
- tbk123, on 06/27/2008, -3/+47i'm soo glad the nurse in the pic is not wearing crocs.
- Chairboy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+29About 2 hours per tank. Amount of time saved by not walking the 350-400 miles. Considering that it'd take about 120 hours to walk that same distance, it's not a horrible trade-off.
And no, city dwellers, we can't all live half a block from everything we need. I'd love to live at the airport where my plane lives, for instance, but can't. - Xel565, on 06/27/2008, -0/+22From the Article: "The math should be easy from here, if you work an 8 hour day, 40 hours a week you work 1080 hours a year."
Let's see typical work week = 5 days
8 hours/day * 5 days/week = 40 hours/ week (check)
40 hours/week * 52 weeks/year = 2080 hours/year (whoops guess it's not so easy huh?) - djdingo, on 06/27/2008, -0/+19I sold my car for gas money.
- btschul, on 06/27/2008, -3/+22Too ***** many.
- pixeldust, on 06/27/2008, -3/+210, I ride a bike to school and work.
- Surferess, on 06/27/2008, -5/+19Let's just say it is a lot of ebay auctions.
- justdan, on 06/27/2008, -1/+14They are on their feet all day. Crocs are light and comfortable.
With that said Crocs are the most horrible shoes ever made. I hate them they are ugly. - KloroFormd, on 06/27/2008, -0/+13One week.
(2 tanks, 19 gallon and 18 gallon. Part-time minimum wage job.)
Lulz. Sucks being in school. - ieatpizza, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1380
- colasrtney, on 06/27/2008, -8/+19What do you mean hours? Bury me for being exceedingly wealthy and having a helper monkey type this for me.
- theutopian, on 06/27/2008, -1/+11Time for a new job.
- adamdaly, on 06/27/2008, -2/+12i work for a week to cover the cost of fuel for a months driving to and from work.
- bstory, on 06/27/2008, -6/+15I think around 1 hour should fill my tank
- Scottamus, on 06/27/2008, -0/+8FTFA:
"The math should be easy from here, if you work an 8 hour day, 40 hours a week you work 1080 hours a year. Average out the total amount of gas you buy for a year, divide by 1080 and there you have it. Then add that number to the one you found through the Edmunds calculator and that should give you the total number of hours you need to work to support your car."
Sorry but 1080 hours a year is 27 weeks. Most of us poor folk have to work a little more than that pendejo. 40 hrs x 50 weeks = 2000 which is a simple number I use for calculating hours a year. (+/- holidays) I can only hope he meant 2080. - thebza451, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9WOW there sure are a LOT of people here making more than $60 an hour, that's amazing i didn't know i was around so many doctors and lawyers and celebrity actors and sports stars
- xGORDOx, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8I commute on a Honda Ruckus which gets a 100mpg and hold 1.3 gallons.
So... 10 minutes? - diggit83, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Holy ***** someone honest.....
Less than 10% of the country make more than$120,000 and yet most of the posters here seem to be at roughly that or higher. - inactive, on 06/27/2008, -3/+10Is this including or excluding the unpaid-overtime from my soul-destroying office job?
- gavin422, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6$60/hour = ~$124,000 a year, so upper-middle class. Not unheard of, especially if your spouse is employed too.
- leerayIG88, on 06/27/2008, -2/+8Well..next time I see you, i will run you over with my SUV.
- bilbravo, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7CEOs don't have to work an hour to fill up a tank... unless you're talking about their private jet. $50 an hour (gas is about $50 a tank here) is about 100k a year, which isn't *a lot*, depending on where you live.
- dgaspard, on 06/27/2008, -3/+8You walk all day and they're comfortable....
- witcompe, on 06/27/2008, -2/+7According to your profile, you live in SFO. $40/hr is NOTHING in SFO or any sizable city in the US for that matter. In NYC that would be considered a little above average salary for a white collar job. So no, you are not rich.... bitch.
- saranagati, on 06/27/2008, -0/+445 minutes? Straight out of college it will be more like 2.5 hours.
- litkaj, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5Not really, $40/hr is only about $83K/year which isn't all that much depending on what part of the country you live in and what you do.
- polarbobbear, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Well, I guess none. Because I live in Europe and don't have a car. And I'm really happy about that.
- minorthreat, on 06/27/2008, -1/+52 hour for a 15 gallon tank. Thank goodness I live close enough to work that I only have to fill up every 3 weeks.
- grantmoore3d, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4About 3.5 hours a week, given that it cuts my travel time by about an hour (if using public transit instead), I'd say that it's good enough for me.
- PupiDog, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4What are you guys doing, pumping by hand-crank? Why does it take hours to fill your tank? I pull up to the pump, put in the nozzle, and a minute or two later the tank is full!
- addiggt, 3 hr 29 min ago, -0/+4I see what you did there.
- grantmoore3d, on 06/27/2008, -2/+6Does your plane happen to be a Transformer?
- aurorous, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Here's an idea try making the same calculation only using your actual take home pay and not just your hourly rate. officially I make $15.24/hr, though after taxes benefits and such i only take home $11.13 per hour. With a 45 min commute that burns 2.5 gallon severyday i have to work almost 1 hour just to pay for the gas I spent getting there (and back). It's not so bad since I carpool with my brother. And they're people who commute far longer than me. I got so spoiled in the old days when it was a 10 min drive to work with no highways involved... sucks when your entire local economy gets exported and you lose your job (thanks NAFTA) and you have to drive for miles to even find someone who's hiring. I'd happily take a a pay cut if I could find a job within this county. Just what I'd save in gas would almost make up for it, and spending 90 min per day less on the road would make up the rest in my book.
- mattlohkamp, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3For about 10 gallons in my Geo Prizm it's usually $40 - $50, and I make that easy in an hour of freelance web development.
... also, why are people who say '1 hour' being dugg down? Do I detect a hint of jealousy, perhaps? - pentium42006, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Direct link to the CNN Calculator: http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/05/29/hours.gallons/i ...
- KMartSheriff, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4And then I'll run you over with my compact car.
- jarjarwang, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4I only fill up every 6 or 7 weeks. We have a trains in the city.
- maddskillz, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3It costs me about 3 hours of work to drive 1000km...I really can't complain
- andy3109, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Wow...surprisingly not a lot at all. Even with $7 gas only a few hours.
- hansonc, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4you're driving a BMW in college? You're probably that kid that everyone hates but is only willing to hangout with because they can mooch off of you.
- cambob76, on 06/27/2008, -1/+420 minutes... Honda Ruckus!
- GlitchEnzo, on 06/27/2008, -2/+5Hmm, I walk a half mile to work everyday, so zero! :-P
- ngmcs8203, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Depends on how big your tank is. Your 11 gallon tank is not my 25 gallon tank. It costs me $115 to fill up my tank... so 4hrs of work. Sigh.
- hughesj919, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2And I imagine it hurts some to drive a Honda Fit too.
- bdbr, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I fill up a 5-year-old Subaru every two weeks. Its about an hour's income pre-tax, 2 hour's income after tax (I get paid well, and drive about half the US norm).
Based on Edmunds cost of ownership I have to work 3.7 weeks a year for my stupid car. I guess that's not bad, but its still a lot. - SaiaRiddle, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2At $15 per hour I have to work just a little over 2 hours to fill mine. Go hyundai.
- defectDS, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3We go to work to fill the tank to get to work to fill the tank to get to work...
*shiver* - mywhitenoise, on 06/27/2008, -2/+4I drive a Prius (about 450 miles a tank), and take the bus to work...is that so hard to believe someone spends less than $50 a month on gas?
and the coughTHINKcough isn't funny. - dupeduperson, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2this is essentially the same as my optimal commuting speed calculator - http://dotphys.net/page1/page10/efficiency/calcula ...
