- jetblackz4, on 05/19/2008, -11/+21Is anyone else sick of having "green" shoved down your throat constantly?
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -3/+10My college is VERY green. Infact, you can SMELL the green in the air. It gives you SUCH A HIGH. Whoops, went to far...
- adml_shake, on 05/19/2008, -1/+7Eco-friendly...huh. Not the green I was thinking of.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -4/+8I can't stand the color green anymore...
- Protonz, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3And I love how the definition of 'green' changes to push a particular agenda.
Watched a program on earth day where they reform people to make them more 'green'. Apparently 'going green' consists of wearing hemp clothing, skipping showers, and going to the farmer's market instead of the supermarket. - cheezintern, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Buried, but good description, I fell for it. In fact, I had to rick roll myself just to feel better.
- jesuswuzanalien, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3My school Western Washington University is using 100% green power. We also got the best green too ;-)
- aclockwork3, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2I think there is. You guys probably smoke just a lil' bit more pot than we do, increasingly polluting the environment, and considering its probably dump compared to ours, that's not a plus. We may just be greener. ;-)
- noseeme, on 05/19/2008, -4/+6My campus is going green by saying "Seriously guys, we should all go green!"
- isaactwito, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Well the idea of hemp clothing is that it's a sustainable material that generally isn't produced in sweatshops or overseas. Farmer's markets are designed to get people to eat food grown (usually) organically, so it's good for the earth, and locally, so it doesn't have to be preserved, over-packaged, shipped long distances, and stored. So yeah, I think green applies pretty well to those thing.
- cheezintern, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1My roommate used to go around the dorms on weekend mornings and collect the thousands of beer cans from the night before. Pretty good money, even at a 5 cent deposit.
- isaactwito, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I think it's good that people at least consider it now, that's a step in the right direction.
- isaactwito, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Whatever, I'm at Evergreen, there's really no way to beat that.
- Bkaufman, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1But meat tastes soooo gooood.
- BrendanM14, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2pretty lengthy topic for such a short article.
- mentat0, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1They're going green by raising tuition far ahead of inflation to wallpaper the rooms with benjamins.
/goes to make another student loan payment - minox, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Actually the green fad is almost a perfect fit for the average college campus. It's trendy and allows both students and professors to cater to each other's pretensions, giving them an even headier sense of self-importance.
- Bkaufman, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Well said sir.
- aserer511, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2I am a Brandeis student, and there was hoorah over the decision by the student body (via majority poll) to spend an unused 100k on not solar panels, but amongst other options, a new gym. I personally supported neither, but give the moral-and only moral-nod of head to solar panels.
- matt.rubin, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1who wants the greens?
- antdude, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Especially Boston Celtics. :(
- Hincapie, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1not at WVU, apparently.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Berkley extracts the water from human waste, but laws prohibit them from drinking it. So they water their plants with it :-P
- GlassAgate, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1OffPiste, I don't know where you're
from, but I don't think kindly of your
hostility towards my home planet. - tomjm5000, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Alright! Georgetown! B-!!
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Fuq your home planet.
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Hippies and libs are going green...regular people are going to class.
- tidu, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I'm not a huge "green" proponent but I don't understand why it's almost a political issue and why most people see it that way.
- jfg84, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1University of MN Morris uses wind power for 60 percent of their electricity needs. They were the first US public institution to do this.
- FatLoser, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Obligatory "hiked tuition so that they could buy expensive Green technologies and then the wasteful administrators took all the credit for it."
- efitz11, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2that's what she said
- elShaggy, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1We recycled our beer cans by creating mobiles for infants!
- zbeast, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1is it going to drop school fee? No... then who gives a rats..
- QuantumRiff, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1My alma matter, Oregon Institute of Technology, is looking to build a 1.2MW geothermal power plant on campus, that will power the entire campus, and sell the surplus.. http://geoheat.oit.edu/pdf/oit/high-temp.pdf (they already use geoheat to heat and cool all of their buildings on campus (and melt snow on the sidewalks in winter)
- ashura001, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Georgia Southern University seems to be doing the exact opposite of going green.
Last semester they pressure washed the halls in my dorm every day and all of the walkways at least once a week.
On top of that, there seems to be a general apathy in the administration for anything that doesn't make my school look more like UGA. It's kind of sad.
Sure, we have a club here that is supposed to be devoted to saving the environment and whatnot, but from what I've seen at their meetings it's basically a bunch of people sitting in a room for an hour and talking amongst themselves in their hemp shirts before running off to Starbucks.
There may be some sort of effort going on somewhere on this campus to make things better, but I've yet to have seen it. - Willy99, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1i prefer this college, promoting free love.
http://tesla.liketelevision.com/liketelevision/tun ... - MichelleC1036, on 05/19/2008, -3/+3A great way for a campus to promote green habits is to encourage vegetarian eating habits!
"To get one pound of healthy meat, an animal needs to take in crops amounting to 16 pounds."
You could actually sustain a life with the food required to produce a few meals worth of meat! - KingGorilla, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1meh
- Nac85, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1I actually happen to attend Ohlone Community college, and they recently built a "green" friendly campus in Newark, CA as a part of their off-shoot location. It was very nice, a bit small, but incredibly well designed. I think that schools going "green" are a decent way to help out. It doesn't mean they have to stand out and make all the differences, but any little bit helps I'd imagine.
Can see a little of it here: http://www.ohlone.edu/org/collegeadvancement/artic ... - aquireworth, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1YES. It's good and all but it seems to be more of a current trend that might die out when people realize it's a bit of extra work to be green. I guess we've trashed the world so much that it's about time we change our ways though.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1I know I am...
- chisayuribi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0What if every college was run by solar power?!?!!
- PinkChicken, on 05/27/2008, -0/+0Another marijuana joke eh?
Great job. - PinkChicken, on 05/27/2008, -0/+0Tuition would cost more than Alienware.
- stinieroo, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0I am an avid meat-eater, and all the cruelty arguments and whatnot were never enough to sway my steadfast enjoyment of being a carnivore. The realization of the amount of food it takes to raise that meat, does begin to though.
I don't think I'll ever give it up anyhow. My protein needs are too high. - psi0nicgh0st, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0My former (cuz I graduated Sunday, thank god) campus' idea of going green was to water the grass 24/7 and make sure noone could walk on it because "they don't take shortcuts". They were a bunch of elitists pricks and the school sucked ass, wish I never transfered there.
- doost, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0The university I attended, which hosts the cheapest in state tuition, buys bulk amounts of IBM Think Pads (now Lenovo, ugh) and Apple MacBooks for every student who attends. The students who do not already own a computer win, and the environment wins, as our campus has mostly gone paperless. Tests are taken on the internet, papers are turned in via E-Mail, and many assignments are handed out in the opposite direction from prof to student over the internet. The university then wins by making a slight profit off of those who wish to buy their computer upon graduating for $300-ish, the price depends on whether you're receiving an Apple or IBM. This is a simple solution to adopt to bring Universities one step closer to a green campus. It is not only going organic and local that allows you to go green.
