- CaptainPlanet, on 01/22/2009, -0/+36While this is great news it might only be temporary and there is still a lot of work to be done. The Congo and other countries that can support it need to be vigilant in fighting illegal logging while providing pathways for real economic development that doesn't depend on exploiting natural resources.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -2/+17For no good reason, I'm going to give the credit for this move to Obama.
- bonjourmr, on 01/22/2009, -1/+13Lets get those mountain gorilla numbers up from 700!
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -2/+14See... that's why the Right will never again dominate: no sense of humor whatsoever.
Here's one you'll get:
Us: Knock, knock...
You: Who's there?
Us: Shut the ***** up and get out. - Peregrination, on 01/22/2009, -0/+8Thanks, Captain Planet.
"The power, is YOURS!"
Sort of off topic:
Oh, and check out the badass voice cast for the show. Never knew they had such talent
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098763/fullcredits#ca ... - AmazingA, on 01/22/2009, -0/+6Seems like a good call- stop all the loggers that aren't paying taxes. If only there were some huge agricultural industry in the U.S. that wasn't being taxed...
- BCPneumatics, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5I suppose it is just a coincidence the Congo government waited to crack down until international timber prices plummeted...
Still, doing good is doing good, even if money's behind it. - sunburner, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5I can't say anything other than this is a promising step in the right direction. :-)
- UselessTrivia, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Holy crap! The congoese government fighting against corruption? I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 01/22/2009, -1/+5This is OUR world. Regardless of what nation is destroying it we should ALL pitch in to make it stop.
- GlitchEnzo, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3I love the fact that this was submitted by CaptainPlanet. Gooooo Planet!!!
- duke_nate, on 01/22/2009, -3/+6as will most of digg :-)
- macewan, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3I think the should earn credits of sorts for not killing off the earth. Lump sums, education funds - whatever. Other countries need to be helping these folks out.
- ajonsey, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3I can't wait until historians start talking about the "Obama Effect"
- brandita, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3Can I interest you in some ethanol?
- Earlofnecromium, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3Woo Rain Forest!!
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2Excellent news, but the DRC is a hellhole (Thanks France & Belgium), and laws like this are going to be very hard to enforce. Also, how much of the damage is done by small scale loggers?
- dse78759, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2This is one of the under reported benefits from the global down turn in building : less wood needed, thus giving forests a break, not only there, but also Brazil, the Pacific Northwest, Malaysia...
- sm3287, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Niceee! Everybody do the congo dance!
- rozlovesben, on 01/22/2009, -1/+3oh! yay!
- recentgradtrish, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2About time!
- Peregrination, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2Trees, ***** Yeah!
- frostbyt, on 01/22/2009, -1/+3I'm going to give the credit for this move to Obama.
First the closing of guantanamo bay and now this. It has not even been a week yet and already he is making waves. makes you wonder what the other guy was up to. - dse78759, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2I see what you did there.
- skicat1, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2in other news the congo loggers take a short break to gear up with more equipment and manpower to redouble their efforts when the timber prices return.
- AdamS420, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2Damn right!
- minoss, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1LOL at people thinking the motives behind this has absolutely anything to do with saving the environment.
- Ttech2, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1Its good, but what about the other forests and places that are being excessively destroyed or fished or such?
Personally I think a little moderation could go a long way in helping our environment - kmpz, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1I'm not naive enough to think that this move is based on 100% noble intentions, but its a small step in the RIGHT direction and I'm glad to hear about it!!!
- anexanhume, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1For once, the question "If a tree falls in the forest..." is becoming less relevant.
- blipblipbeep, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2The rest of the heading: While U.S Economy is in Recession
- Hrodrik, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1Finally some good news. Most people don' realize how important this is.
- junkneo, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1Who runs DR Congo anyway. May be the militia need more hidding places.
- slapthemonkey, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1That's the way
- fxu1989, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1whoosh...?
- brandita, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1I like it.
- tnerb067, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2hahahaha
- intrepidia, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1they are probably just extorting the loggers to hand over more bribes.... Congo is not the bastion of civil law so any pronouncements are at best empty words without the institutions to back it up....
- emanpa68, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1I know this is good and all, but we just took away alot of familys source of income... There should always be as much effort to help create more jobs to replace the ones we chop down.
- savethe, on 07/22/2009, -0/+0This is a great start, where they finish off we can start. www.savetheworldtech.com Worth a look.
- Astark, on 01/23/2009, -0/+0They're saving the trees but they're still chopping off limbs, if you catch my drift.
- AdamS420, on 01/22/2009, -1/+1Best news headline today and I really hope this will be a meaningful and lasting one!
- jmcardle7740, on 01/22/2009, -3/+3If we dont, we will never know how delicious they are!
- greenie281, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0You are right - but then mankind was never one for moderation especially when palms can be greased. Therein is the tragedy. Total short-sightedness!
- greenie281, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0We have to all add our weight to the conservation ethic - the damage being wrought on the World's rainforests is simply wrecking any hope of a future for future generations. They deserve better!
- brandita, on 01/23/2009, -1/+1Great now those gorillas from the movie Congo are going to multiply in numbers.
- greenie281, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0A forest ecology is more than trees - it's a whole entity. Study up!
- OriginalLucid1, on 01/23/2009, -1/+1It is a jungle, get it right. And the thing about trees, they are renewable. Forests, jungles, they will grow back.
- k3rfuffl3, on 01/22/2009, -2/+1If they don't allow logging logging will just be illegal. AKA anti-gun control nut argument.
