- redcolumbine, on 11/13/2009, -1/+71Now everybody else will have to ketchup.
- redcolumbine, on 11/14/2009, -1/+36It would have been easy to pickle less ambitious goal, but I relish the thought of them dressing down the competition.
- hbyrne, on 11/13/2009, -3/+36They've mustard up the courage to be a leader in this sector.
- elijahyossie, on 11/14/2009, -1/+33We'll all be in a jam if the practice doesn't spread. The environment will be toast!
- Ryan0617, on 11/13/2009, -0/+22Nice to see a company exceed its goals.
- sarahlee, on 11/14/2009, -1/+18Thanks for the giggles. You all really spiced up this entrée.
- inactive, on 11/15/2009, -2/+18These condiments suck.
- novenator, on 11/13/2009, -3/+17oooo... Nice one.
- FreddyBoy1, on 11/15/2009, -0/+11This shows how 'going green' is good business...
Upgrading to 'drip' irrigation, producing more tomatoes with less fertilizer, reducing the materials used in packaging, reducing the fuel use of their fleet, re-using water for other processes and making fuel from agricultural waste are all things that reduce costs. That means more profit.
Nice to see one big company 'gets it'...!! - jackalsclaw, on 11/15/2009, -0/+9The numbers are per ton of product, so your argument doesn't make sense.
- rednip, on 11/15/2009, -0/+7I like your critical thinking, but you really need to be sure that the context is right, and that the facts support your guess. Reading the article is sometimes a good start.
- infectaphibian, on 11/15/2009, -0/+7There is an interesting video on Biography.com about the history of Heinz. Evidently, they were the first large company that figured out that treating the employees well increases their productivity and maintaining high quality standards increases sales. Evidently they have been 'getting it' for a long time.
- rushnerd, on 11/15/2009, -0/+6Now if they would just do away with as a whole, ketchup packets. Seriously the amount of waste those things have made over the years is unimaginable.
- DiggRage, on 11/15/2009, -0/+6Every young boy's dream is to open a ketchup factory! lol
- xxTazxx, on 11/15/2009, -0/+4You have to remember a lot of the big CEO's and thinkers in big companies actually do have a conscience, it's just that the corporation machine is there to make more and more money, as are the shareholders, and they are supposed to be doing this for the shareholders. But when green becomes economically viable and a plus point, as a lot of customers are becoming conscious and it is an amazing PR tool, then more and more companies will follow suite.
- browny1978, on 11/15/2009, -1/+4Shame ketchup is now powder form, but atleast Heinz as reduce its water use.
- Countess666, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3but they aren't making more money, they are saving it.
and its good that they are, it shows that efficiency investments can make sense financially. - Sirlolalot, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3Dey tuk ur ke'jup fakturees!
- mbst2000, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3The result is the same, so what's your point? What do you want them to do, lose money? That's some sound business advice right there.
Some people are never happy - sophiaperennis, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3Now they just have to remove all High Fructose Corn Syrup from the ketchup.
- meddelem, on 11/15/2009, -0/+2hemp cellophane / biodegradable plastic ???
- Appox, on 11/15/2009, -0/+2Yeah I have
- Coreyc150, on 11/15/2009, -0/+2now they need to figure out how to grow the grass down at heinz field
- guanyin, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1 Did you ever wonder why ketchup bottles have that paper label on the very top? Sometimes bug parts float to the top during shipping, and the top label covers them up. People usually dump it on their food and never notice.
If sauces seem thinner, it is because companies are constantly trying to find cheaper ways of making a product without a detectable change of taste. Heinz makes a lot more than ketchup. They make Ore Ida, Smart Ones, Lea & Perrins and lots more. Many soups you get in restaurants are made by Heinz. When a recipe is a hit, they try copy it and make it cheaper. - michirican123, on 11/15/2009, -1/+2what the hell was that supposed to mean?
- rushnerd, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1That's as realistic as shipping companies/stores/online retailers using biodegradable packing material. I'm sure it's not too spendy, but they wouldn't want to spend more I guess.
- scampercom, on 11/15/2009, -1/+1Exactly what I was going to say. I’m all for companies trying to be more ecologically sustainable… but I won’t support any of them who try to poison me with HFCS. Heinz ketchup didn’t use corn syrup at all a decade or two ago, so there’s no reason to have it now.
And there are a ton of alternatives, so… *shrug* Nice try, Heinz. - govsucks, on 11/15/2009, -4/+4Thats great. Should save them lots of revenue that they can probably use to generate more product and hire more people. Plus, government didn't force them to do it. May not be a plus to many diggers but thats a plus in my book.
- ChromaVita, on 11/15/2009, -1/+1They can try, but I think Heinz will have a few years to relish in their victory.
- kalvinb, on 11/15/2009, -1/+1It's all about the bottom line. Companies have been looking for ways to cut down their costs forever. The green movement has just now allowed them to nicely package their results for PR purposes rather than just to impress the shareholders.
Wasted resources is wasted money. - austroLogi, on 11/15/2009, -4/+3And I will continue with my protest of this stupid climate change religion by switching to hunts ketchup. I think of ways to increase my carbon footprint everyday!
- mdunsmore, on 11/15/2009, -4/+3PR marketing fluff gives me the sh*ts. When their serious they'll stop manufacturing Baked Beans!
- h409, on 11/15/2009, -1/+0who set them and who is scoring the results???????? i bet it is john????
- eljitto, on 11/15/2009, -2/+1I know. Their ketchup just got a whole lot greener
- borez, on 11/15/2009, -6/+4Do you have a sauce for this comment.
- govtdoesnotwork, on 11/15/2009, -5/+3The fact that government did not HAVE to force them to do it and a good thing for the environment happened anyway probably counts as a minus to those diggers you're referencing...
- DiggRage, on 11/15/2009, -3/+1stupid
- borez, on 11/15/2009, -7/+4Anybody else noticed that the Heinz bean sauce has become runnier and the soups thinner of late?
- oboshoe, on 11/15/2009, -4/+1Its a digg one liner.
Not a thesis. - prakash1234, on 11/15/2009, -8/+2They will get carbon credits as they are existing big polluters, and your son cannot open a ketchup factory and compete with heinz.
- inactive, on 11/15/2009, -10/+4Easiest way for a company to drum up sales and impress enviro groupies is to come out with nonesense such as a 2009 sustainability report.
Those of you impressed with this are fools. Your inability to raise a critical eye just by the term used "sustainability" is mindblowing and speaks volumes about education in America. - kinerry, on 11/15/2009, -9/+2Nice to see a company find a way to make more money
That's all it is, don't act like they are doing this to help the world - oboshoe, on 11/15/2009, -10/+2Probably because the economy is down and they are selling 20% less product.
- chicagobiff, on 11/15/2009, -14/+2in related news, ketchup still has no business being on a hotdog.
