- miko555, on 02/13/2008, -1/+19The name is kinda wrong... The penguins in 'Happy Feet' are Emperor penguins. The article is talking about King penguins. Two different animals completely. The easiest way to tell is that their chicks look completely different. Emperors have black and white ones, and Kings have full brown ones.

Digg me down, i don't care. I just really hate when people get their animals wrong. - Craga89, on 02/13/2008, -1/+17I is not so happy with this titles format innit.
- Zlorp, on 02/13/2008, -6/+18what about this article pointing out how the next solar cycle is not starting as expected and how the global average temperatures have gone DOWN since 98?
http://www.dailytech.com/Solar+Activity+Diminishes ...
nobody seems to have any ***** clue what they're talking about in relation to global warming. not al gore, not scientists, not anyone.
go ahead and digg it down, as i know none of you will even look at this article - thomoore, on 02/13/2008, -10/+22There have been warm weather times in the past, the Norse farmed cattle in Greenland until the weather got colder and they starved. The penguins have been around through a number of these cycles. The penguins will probably be all right. The problem is, we WE be all right? Most of the ideas for fighting climate change won't work, mainly because natural processes such as volcanoes generate far more pollution than we do. Fortunately people in Europe are beginning to catch on - http://www.scragged.com/articles/a-light-dawns-in- ...
- SHuisman, on 02/13/2008, -0/+11"...are Well Not Gonna Be So Happy" is that proper english?
- mOdQuArK, on 02/13/2008, -3/+10@thomoore: natural processes such as volcanoes generate far more pollution than we do
That's a typical misconception. Here's a more balanced viewpoint:

- Wosat, on 02/13/2008, -3/+9Who can doubt the UN? I mean, they've always been so trustworthy...
- penguinxp, on 02/13/2008, -6/+12dont most penguins live in moderate climates as it is? they dont all live on ice sheets like most people seem to think...
- loki49152, on 02/13/2008, -2/+7UN... scientists? The UN doesn't have scientists. It has politicians.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 02/13/2008, -4/+9The planet has never changed temperatures before. It must be all and I mean all our fault and not the fault of some giant flaming ball in the sky or the cycle of a planet.
Now granted I am antipollution but don't bullshiat me! - PittPanthersFan, on 02/13/2008, -0/+4I thought Happy Feet used CGI penguins?
- centran, on 02/13/2008, -0/+4Sucks for the King Penguin but this is great news for the Emperor Penguin!
No more walking 60 miles just to get some tail umm... tail feathers? - iggee85, on 02/14/2008, -1/+5I did look at the article and it looks like you have no clue what you're talking about either. They never explicitly mention global average temperature (which is a flawed metric anyway) and there's no conclusive evidence in it, they just state that more research will be done on this issue. Here's what it says on the correlation between solar cycles and earth's climate:
"Such research dates back to 1991, when the Danish Meteorological Institute released a study showing that world temperatures over the past several centuries correlated very closely with solar cycles. A 2004 study by the Max Planck Institute found a similar correlation, but concluded the timing was only coincidental, as the solar variance seemed too small to explain temperature changes.
However, researchers at DMI continued to work, eventually discovering what they believe to be the link. The key factor isn't changes in solar output, but rather changes in the sun's magnetosphere A stronger field shields the earth more from cosmic rays, which act as "seeds" for cloud formation. The result is less cloud cover, and a warming planet. When the field weakens, clouds increases, reflecting more light back to space, and the earth cools off.
Recently, lead researcher Henrik Svensmark was able to experimentally verify the link between cosmic rays and cloud formation, in a cloud chamber experiment called "SKY" at the Danish National Space Center. CERN plans a similar experiment this year.
Even NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies -- long the nation's most ardent champion of anthropogenic global warming -- is getting in on the act. Drew Shindell, a researcher at GISS, says there are some "interesting relationships we don't fully understand" between solar activity and climate." - mimigins, on 02/13/2008, -0/+4I was actually going to post this too. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed.
- inactive, on 02/13/2008, -0/+3wtf are you rambling about you crazy derelict?
- miko555, on 02/13/2008, -1/+4Did you read the article? This only really affects the King penguin because it's breeding cycle takes almost a whole year. Other penguins have much shorter ones lasting for a couple months.
- JasonCox, on 02/13/2008, -0/+3At last my evil plan to rid the world of Linux's mascot is almost complete! Muh-hahaha!!!!
- Richandler, on 02/13/2008, -1/+4Aren't all the reports coming out that more ice is forming in the antarctic?
- iggee85, on 02/14/2008, -1/+3You didn't even read the article. The argument is that a particular species of penguin (not all penguins), the king penguin, will have it's breeding cycle ***** up because they are dependent on stable food sources over a relatively long period of time. And because their breeding grounds are located in a place that is predicted to see drastic climate changes over a short period of time, there is concern that their food sources will be affected enough that it would severely affect the king penguin population.
- ralphie81, on 02/13/2008, -1/+3It's wrong for more reasons than that.
- norman619, on 02/13/2008, -5/+7How about the long running and lond debunked view that CO2 drives claimte change?

- Entheoddity, on 02/13/2008, -3/+5Hilarious that you got dugg down for pointing out a fact that doesn't agree with the "ZOMG SAVE TEH *insert cute animal here*" fanaticism that is so rampant on digg.
- jgtg32a, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Well Gentoo will be ok then.
- MacDevyn, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Dugg because Penguins ***** rock!!!
- Math, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Cattle are currently being farmed in Greenland, and also other countries at the same latitude (Sweden, Russia, etc...).
We're currently worried that Global Warming will cause it to be several degrees warmer than even this. - norman619, on 02/13/2008, -1/+2Water vapor is a FAR more powerful "greenhouse" gas than CO2. To see the truth of this all you need to do is go out to the desert. During the day it's scorching hot and nights it is very cold. Why? Because of the lack water vapor in the air. Water vapor is VERY good at capturing and storing heat.
- Zlorp, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2"Observational data seems to support the claims -- or doesn't contradict it, at least. According to data from Britain's Met Office, the earth has cooled very slightly since 1998. The Met Office says global warming "will pick up again shortly." Others aren't so sure."
so whats that then? i suppose "the earth has cooled" is talking about something other than temperatures then right? since i have no clue what im talking about and all.
also, i dont recall trying to insinuate that this is truth and global warming is false, i just pointed out that no one seems to REALLY have any idea whats going on. - iggee85, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1You're right I missed that part as I used Ctrl-F for "global average temperature". But I disagree when you say that no one has any idea what's going on. We have a general idea on how earth's climate works and how it is affected by the sun, volcanoes, humans, etc. And we have tons of research backing this model up.
The article you linked to FIRST quotes fringe scientists that disagree with the idea that human activity can affect the climate. THEN it reports the actual news (the link between the sun's magnetosphere and the climate). The editor did this to cast more uncertainty and doubt than is necessary into a subject that's already heavily researched. Like I said, the article is inconclusive and doesn't really provide anything new. - gypsi, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1comma button must have been busted
- jgtg32a, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1I don't actually believe is global warming but wow, welcome to my block list.
1. you linked to a PoS blog that didn't have any information except for a link to the paper
2. that paper is fake, I'm one of the laziest people ever and when I half ass a paper they don't look that bad. - gypsi, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1is it september already?
- 0xbaadf00d, on 02/13/2008, -2/+3"Notice the sharp increase in the last section?"
What year is represented by 0 on that image? The big spike at the end occurs AFTER 0, leading me to believe that it is predicted and not actual data. - jmnz, on 02/13/2008, -1/+2My point of view is based on your definition of research. But yes, to be fair, most peoples point of view isn't based on any decent attempt at credible research. My point is that people looking into things for themselves have to start somewhere; by looking at different media (not just the newspaper and TV which, where I live at least, is all people pay attention to) is a start, and I think that's infinitly better that listening to misinformed mainstream media.
- tmbrwolf19, on 02/13/2008, -3/+3You are aware this is also a media publication? This is no more accurate then news or TV. Research is looking at scientific journals, publications, and actually scientific reports, not a web based tech magazine. Just because it agrees with your point of view, doesn't make it creditable.
- Zlorp, on 02/13/2008, -1/+1it IS a media publication (not one that typically talks about climate change) but if you notice it includes references from nasa and the danish national space center.
- jmnz, on 02/13/2008, -5/+5Thank you for the link. It is good to see there are still some people that do a bit of their own research instead of taking TV and newspapers as absolute truth.

Re: Most of the ideas for fighting climate change won't work, mainly because natural processes such as volcanoes generate far more pollution than we do
A additional example of how we produce a lot more pollution than volcano's lies in this graph of atmospheric CO2 concentration over the past 400,000 years:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Carbon_Dioxide_ ...
years 400,000bc through about 1900 AD are the work of volcanoes. Year 1900 to now is us. Notice the sharp increase in the last section? - austang, on 02/14/2008, -0/+0Penguins get props for living where nobody else wants to, and then fighting over their territory with giant albino bears. All just so ninja whales and superior lesser-cute animals can eat them.
- penguinxp, on 02/14/2008, -0/+0ahh, and no i didnt read the article :p my response was more to the first comment and the overview i suppose.
