- biffta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It is so unfortunate that these innocent creatures are suffering more as a result of the wars that have ravaged the area, than the ones who started it.
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"During the last fortnight alone, more than 400 hippos have been slaughtered as well as a number of buffalo, elephants and other animals,"
This is disgusting and someone needs to do something about this....
I mean sure someone like me can't hop a plane to go kick some Mai-Mai militia's asses or anything, but we can at least raise some awareness about this. I'm glad this was submitted because otherwise I would have had no idea. - dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow. I'm not even going to get into this sad excuse for a comment. But I can say...
How in the hell does the killing of hippos in african national parks in Congo have anything to do with american politics? - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6WTF?
How does a story about an African species going extinct result in an American political flame? - lithuin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They're eating the hippos?
Dare I say, those are some hungry, hungry humans!
Yeah, I went there.
That was an awesome game.
I think I still have some of those marbles stuck up my nose.
(Just trying to add some humor to a depressing situation.) - pooslinger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There goes Hasbro's Christmas sales of "Hungry Hungry Hippos" since playing with extinct animals won't be as fun.
- Rivetgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"communist"
You keep saying this word, I do not think it means what you think it means.
"I do have military training."
World of warcarft doesn't count as "military training" - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, with nothing to distract them but greedy dictators extorting money from starving citizens, attempts at genocide, and a third of the population dying from AIDS, saving some hippos should be no problem.
- Rivetgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Busy trying to save the cute animals.
- GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This Azur2 guy has shown up recently in a lot of threads making lot of ridiculous trolls. I think it's time for a block.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Tell you what Azur2, why don't you grab a large group of PETA protesters and you all go down there, immediately, and put a stop to this butchery. Let's see PETA put their money where their mouth is now, I'm certain the heavily armed poachers and militia will be more then happy to listen to the terms PETA will present them.
- dramaDodger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dustedbunny
Agreed - disgusting. I wish so badly that I could do something to save these fascinating creatures from extinction. We've driven so many species to become extinct already and even just one would have been one too many. It just makes me so angry and so sad to see what a mess we humans are making of this once beautiful planet. - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The WWF is cool, and I like what they do. But I think we need to send PETA there anyways. They think they're cool by splashing paint on people who wear fur coats, I think they should apply their terrorist activities to the poachers and militia. Save the hippos, and put PETA in their place!
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"It really is ironic that the war that caused the most deaths since world war 2 was ignored, while the deaths of a few members of the species that kills the most people in Africa brings up this attention."
In many ways it's the ***** people who are the goddamn problem to begin with pal. If humans want to go about killing each other, then fair enough, let them. But it is still no excuse to go about trashing the rest of the planet in the mean time. - dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Azur2
....Please just stop. You're making yourself look like more of a fool as you continue with this stupid argument. - repins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well at least you cannot blame Dick Cheney .......we all know how good he is with a gun.
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes, thats why dinosaurs sell so poorly.
- repins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no kidding......on so many issues
- repins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is PETA? The World Wildlife Foundation? The Sierra Club? Greenpeace?
- veersite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, I have a perfect solution!
Our military snipers need practice, right? How bout we work out a deal with those parks so our military gets to come in a "poach" militiamen? I think it would discourage the hippo hunting with a clear, direct message that everyone could understand! - glmory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It really is ironic that the war that caused the most deaths since world war 2 was ignored, while the deaths of a few members of the species that kills the most people in Africa brings up this attention.
- snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on, gang... stop feeding the troll.
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, a hippo can bite a crocodile in half. Not so good at fighting people with rifles, though.
- Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone else read the headline as "Park Hippies Face Extinction" ?
- aflores3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont think hippos have problems killing humans albeit not 'in retaliation'.
from wikipedia:
"They kill crocodiles and lions, and are even responsible for more human deaths than any other African animal"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippopotamus - rsmaniak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i think hippo's should start killing human beings in retaliation.
seriously, everytime i see stuff like this it makes me hate the human race, at least we're not gonna be around for much, we're just circling the drain.... - o0Redbird0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think someone should do something about this. Veersite, I totally agree with your solution! I'm not normally one for violence, but maybe if they got shot at once in awhile, it would get through their head that it's not right what they are doing. They may be quite vicious at times, but they are still animals and all animals, not just the cute little fuzzy ones, need to be saved.
- avolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe we should go instead
http://www.vhemt.org/ - HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hippos are vicious.
..no really, they might look gentle, but they can kick some ass if they have to. - dstz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Hundred of thousands.. wait... millions of people died in Congo in the past years, but I'm sure that a few hippos will make us shed a tear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Congo_War - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1WTF said I was with PETA or even remotely agrees with PETA? That's what you learned in the Clan?
I support WWF, and the *are* there, frequently fighting those heavily armed guerillas with lightly armed park guards. If they'd have me hell yes I'd pick up a gun and go help them, and I do have military training. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Be my guest.
I will note that you can't have read many threads in the environment section if you haven't seen lots of arguments mirroring those of timmarhy and rogerbannister here:
http://www.digg.com/environment/Booming_populations_threaten_East_Asian_coasts - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0You guys haven't read any of the previous extinction threads, have you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Cue rightist clueless who will now inform us that since humans are natural, extinction is natural, and only a leftist commie pinko would object to having hippos go extinct and besides, in 50 million years new species will have evolved.
