- granolajoe, on 10/18/2007, -5/+27I don't think there's any real need to "prove" that whales don't need to die for Japan to conduct scientific research. It's just a ***** excuse they use to justify the killing in the first place, and it's more acceptable internationally than their other excuse - that it's just part of their culture and traditions.
- Lixie, on 10/18/2007, -9/+26Japan uses the term 'scientific research' as a loophole for whale hunting. Much the same way Bush uses the term 'interrogation' for torture.
- Pinkertinkle, on 10/18/2007, -2/+17Everyone knows Japan's scientific research on whales is figuring out which species is the tastiest.
- SaintDogbert, on 10/16/2007, -2/+13Killing the whales is necessary for the type of research the Japanese are doing. They are determining which parts of the whales are the most delicious.
- debuggercll, on 10/16/2007, -1/+11Whales drop great loot.
- MacEnvy, on 10/16/2007, -2/+11It's too bad you aren't going to "waste your time looking into it", because for once they're right. Tagging and tracking is much more beneficial than catching, killing, and serving for "research purposes". I'm not a big fan of Greenpeace, but they've got a damn good point in this case, and they're not hurting anyone in their attempts to make said point this time.
- UncleCrapper, on 10/18/2007, -1/+9Sure, Japan. You can kill a few whales for research purposes, but if any of the whales end up in supermarkets you can expect severe trade sanctions.
That's what the international community should say to Japan. Of course, no one has the balls to call them on their ***** whale "research." - GeneralKickass, on 10/18/2007, -0/+8Japan sure has a huge appetite for their research.
- inhaler, on 10/16/2007, -0/+8Greenpeace =/= PETA.
- wphj, on 10/16/2007, -0/+8You're the one that took it too far.
- monkeyrun, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7PETA?
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -6/+13But whale meat is oh so tasty.
- crackah, on 10/16/2007, -9/+16Digg this ***** up, because what they do is BS.
- dinostabOMG, on 10/16/2007, -2/+8and delicious?
- stklaw, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6Did someone say loophole?
OMG it's in my head again! - daldredge, on 10/16/2007, -3/+8Are you talking about Japan killing whales or are you talking about all the diesel boats that Greenpeace uses while saying that the burning of fossil fuels is wrong?
- chrisinsocalif, on 10/16/2007, -3/+8Japan over fish our oceans along with other countries disregarding nature for their fish diets. Fish numbers are diminishing and there are efforts to improve this situation, I just hope more can be done.
- dinostabOMG, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5Maybe they could just lick them and release them back into the wild.
- monkeyrun, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5actually it's really not that tasty...
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -1/+5Where's a good French Scuba diver when you need one.
- Asianwaste, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Yea GreenPeace are a bunch of pricks.
- MacEnvy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3@bmson
I suspect it might be better if you leave out the scrotum. Jesus. - bmson, on 10/16/2007, -2/+5Americans (Alaska state) hunts 50 whales a year.
You shouldn't always point at the foreigner. - Julz, on 10/16/2007, -2/+5The New Zealand government and people have been trying to stop Japan from whaling for "research" for years now, hopefully more nations will stop turning a blind eye to this issue
- bmson, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3I've not tasted whale, like the Japanese cooking them (I'll try it when I get the opportunity).
Icelanders but the whale in gravel for 12 weeks and put into a drying shack for 3 months.
Then we eat it on Þorrablótum (old viking festival) with sheep's scrota and liver sausage.
It tastes as bad as it sound. Icelanders grow up in this tradition so it is probably worse for foreigners.
But it's not about the taste, it's about the tradition and showing how much of a man you are ;) - tmbrwolf19, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Unfortunately the global mantra when it comes to the oceans is 'out of sight, out of mind'. Whaling is bad, but so is drag netting, and hell, there are companies looking to essentially strip mine parts of the ocean floor. What we need is a new Jacque Cousteau to get out there an show the world what we are ignoring.
- allan17, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Exactly :)
- WhereAmI, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Although I'm sure most of Greenpeace is against nuclear power, I remember reading on Digg (well, Treehugger) that one of the higher ups is for it as opposed to coal or other resources that emit a hell of a lot more than nuclear.
- Buelldozer, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4Why does EVERY ***** thread have some freaking yokel Bush bashing? This is a story about the JAPANESE and the killing of WHALES. Bush has absolutely nothing to do with this story. Please keep your anti-Bush rants where they belong. WHICH ISN'T IN THIS THREAD!
- MacEnvy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Sure. But I already only eat fish I catch, and I'm not Japanese so it's unlikely my lifestyle choices will have an effect on the problem. So, we're left with one choice: support organizations that are trying to actually solve the problem.
Your comment is a posterchild for why pure, laissez-faire, individualist capitalism breaks down on international scales. - DangerCollie, on 10/16/2007, -5/+8How would they like if we started "researching" Japanese?
Fix 'em right they taste like chicken! - jstone, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Yeah. They're against all (powerful) forms of energy production. Solar and wind are great, but they require huge farms to come near the output of a nuclear plant. Plus, they're only applicable in some areas. The only downside to nuclear reactors is the waste (unfortunately a pretty big one), but hopefully fast breeder reactors can help with that.
- MacEnvy, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3What's the alternative? Nuclear? The government would never allow it (ever try licensing a personal nuclear reactor?), and I'm pretty sure that Greenpeace is (wrongly) against nuclear power anyway.
Maybe they could use biodiesel ... hell, maybe they already do. In any case, it's a little too simplistic to condemn them for using water travel by common means. - rootstyle, on 10/16/2007, -2/+4I disagree. Properly prepared, both whale steak and whale sashimi are delicious. Theres a great restaurant for it in Shibuya near the 189 building.
- tmbrwolf19, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2While Paul is a bit overzealous in his approach, he still hasn't killed anyone. At most he damages equipment beyond repair. Really his approach isn't that radical. In the 1980s when Spanish fishing trawlers were setting nets in Canadian waters, the Canadian government used navy divers to cut and fowl their nets and wreck their equipment. The oceans are essentially lawless, and governments are willing to start policing them, vigilantly justice will probably be here to stay.
- kazuhima, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1No.
- fluxion, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1tasty life a fox
- AceLy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1If it is not all about the research then is it no longer research?
- bmson, on 10/16/2007, -1/+2there is a American whale extremist that is considered terrorist in Iceland (I think also Norway and Japan).
Paul Watson (Sea Shepherd) sank two whale ships in Iceland 1986, while the were in port and then he flew from the country.
He has also attacked ships in Norway and Japan.
Than he paint's some trophies on his ship...

And that's there flag...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Seashepherd_sma ...
Are you people really surprise that Iceland, Japan and Norway keep whaling (Iceland stop whaling this year) when some foreigners attacks there countries.
If you give up, the terrorist have won. - moskaudancer, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Copypasta isn't cool anymore. Actually, it never was.
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1No, you are. And I said NO TAKE BACKS! Bush eats Muslim babies the proof is on the web. Vote for Mike Gravel!!
- hawkspur, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to bury your story now.
- Asianwaste, on 10/16/2007, -2/+3Quick someone call France. We may need to sink a GreenPeace boat.
- MercedRocks, on 10/17/2007, -2/+3If a "research" subject ends up on a dinner table is it really all about research?
- inhaler, on 10/16/2007, -3/+4There is. Stop eating fish.
Seriously, we can all complain about the state of affairs as much as we want (and be fatalists), but it really comes down to personal accountability and effort to bring change. Don't like how Walmart exploits foreign labor? Stop buying their products. The one REALLY great thing capitalism allows is voting through your wallet. If corporations realize people are upset enough with what they're doing to not buy their product, they'll change their tune. Think of it as initiating social change without the bureaucracy of government slowing it down. - Asianwaste, on 10/16/2007, -1/+2Grinding hippies is a lot more fun.
- rootstyle, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1I meant to say 109 building, I'm clearly too tired tonight.
- ryllharu, on 10/16/2007, -1/+2I'm conflicted on this issue. I don't agree with Japan's whale hunting, but I also hate Greenpeace for becoming a far more politicized organization than the ideals they were founded on.
- WhereAmI, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Gah, session expired.
http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/ ...
Nope.
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/02/could_nucl ...
One of the founders that left because of his stance.
Edit:So now it replies in the wrong place? - inactive, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1No, you're the one that took it too far. NO TAKE BACKS! :P
Show me one piece of evidence that Bush ISNT really trying to eat Muslim babies. Because I can show you 3 web blogs and a flagged Wikipedia post that says he is, so there. -
