- badqat, on 01/03/2009, -5/+46A fool and their money...
- AWBoy666, on 01/03/2009, -5/+28Oh My God......could this scam get any worse? It's been shown time and time again that green credit companies are just *****.
- tonmil, on 01/03/2009, -5/+24Optional tax... for now.
- Smurph0404, on 01/03/2009, -2/+20So I guess climate change will go away if we throw enough money at it, right?
- Pareidoliatic, on 01/03/2009, -5/+23Carbon offsets are the biggest scam since De Beers convinced people that diamonds were scarce. When you burn non-renewable fossil resources and add them to the atmosphere, no amount of money changes this. The oil is gone, and pollution is incrementally increased.
- GRTWHT, on 01/03/2009, -5/+14OMG I wish I had thought of this! Someone's going to end up richer than Bill Gates if they can implement this in every major US city.
- tgc1, on 01/03/2009, -0/+8Ladies and Gentlemen PAY ATTENTION now, or pay with your wallet later. Many have been warning of such a thing for a long time now. Many others who have bought into the idea that humans are solely responsible for climate change, are now going to be taxed into oblivion for just having the audacity to exist. Make no mistake, everything you do involves fuel and using resources from the earth. And if these kinds of people can convince you that your existence is causing the earth to die, guess what, you're going to have to start paying them. They know the real answer, do you?
It's plainly obvious that an entirely new industry is being sprouted up to take advantage of people who refuse to think for themselves. Perpetrated both by government and big business. They are going to try and make you pay. Make everything "green" while scooping money from your wallet for it and giving you nothing in return. Ladies and Gentleman PLEASE do not be so foolish as to listen to these people. Because i'll tell you one thing, all these politicians and big business tycoons with their mega mansions and private jets sure as ***** don't care what you do with your recycling, and your green initiatives so long as they get a cut from it. And i'll assure you another thing, they aren't going to reduce and conserve like they are going to tell you to do. If anything can be said for this its to think for yourself. Stop being cowed together like sheep and blindly going along with this whole agenda, because if you keep it up, sooner or later they're going to get us. They're going to make us pay for the right to breathe. To eat. To *****. To pass gas. To live. Make no mistake.
They're already doing it. See: Lightbulbs, Plastic Bags, Emissions testing, congestion charges, environmental surtaxes etc... - osok, on 01/03/2009, -1/+9And now we begin to see the endgame of the whole global warming scam, and the global cooling denialists. The whole global warming BS is just an attempt to create another industry to separate fools from their money.. optional now.. mandatory in the future.
I foresee that this will become a tax mostly on those in the north such as Canada, where energy use is a fact of life.
prepare to pay tax on EVERY activity. even breathing..
I for one refuse to give into this crap. when British Columbia put in the carbon tax, I converted my diesel car and truck to burn alternate cheap fuels, Used motor oil, when filtered is an excellent fuel (smokes a bit, and churns out heavy metals but WGAF). bunker oil is carbon tax exempt and it burns nicely in a diesel engine with some modifications. - inactive, on 01/03/2009, -4/+12What about the cloud of smug this is sure to form?
- lolwaffle, on 01/03/2009, -2/+8Please don't assume all people open to the idea of climate change being real are also for carbon offset credits. I think it's a blatant scam, right up there with promising things that you don't (allegedly) get until you're dead, like heaven or 72 virgins.
- johnfritz, on 01/03/2009, -1/+7Are you ***** nuts?
Oh, and I have a question. If we continue to do this stupid ***** in the name of imaginary man-made Global Warming, how will we know when to stop? As in, how will we gauge the success or failure of our actions ten years from now? Twenty years? Fifty?
You get the idea. I hope. - darladoon, on 01/03/2009, -1/+6i understand the concept, but what's done is done, right? if you fly in an airplane, and thus put carbon into the atmosphere, it's not like purchasing offsets will remove that same carbon from that same atmosphere.
having said that, if airlines can figure out a way to NOT use fossil fuels, then ok....
- Paulorific, on 01/03/2009, -4/+9This is the stupidest thing. We don't need money, we need scientists. Invent a machine that eats carbon and ***** out oxygen (a giant photosynthesis machine shaped like a sunflower) and no one will have to worry about global warming.
The only problem is that global warming extremists think the only way to stop it is by not using fossil fuels at all. If it was up to me the entire world would be powered by solar alone. We have to invest in technology, not in trees. Quite frankly I could give a ***** about trees.
So I don't get buried: I'm not a global warming denier, I'm just a "green" denier. - Dre_the_Geek, on 01/03/2009, -0/+5This kind of crap reminds me of the prayer farms that were set up during the crusades where wealthy and pious knights would pay for priests and monks to pry for their souls around the clock to OFFSET the crimes that they were committing.
- PhantomPhoenix, on 01/03/2009, -2/+7OMG...
I hate 'carbon offsets'...
All I hear is SCAM.
Here's an idea: recycle, buy solar panels for you home, get a hybrid or electric car, but for the love of the environment don't give your money to some stranger who says they're going to somehow "offset" your carbon. - rynsa, on 01/03/2009, -1/+5"Details — such as how exactly the offsets will reduce carbon emissions — are as yet vague."
How is this green again? Sounds like a PR ploy. I'm putting a "World Peace" kiosk in my front yard... wanna contribute? - compulsive1, on 01/03/2009, -0/+4Can we start selling other credits for undesirable behavior?
How about child abuse credits?
Drunk driving credits?
Mean prick credits?
Lying scumbag credits?
Spousal cheating credits?
As long as someone promises to not do any of those things we should be able to buy the peace of mind knowing that we are not contributing to moral decline of society.
I bet we could jump start the economy by just dealing in all kinds of "credits". - inactive, on 01/04/2009, -0/+4LOL, a moron and his money....
- compulsive1, on 01/03/2009, -0/+4But, it's "climate change" we are preventing. So, as long as temperatures vary from year to year (100% chance of that happening) there is no reason to claim success- ever.
- zona, on 01/03/2009, -2/+5what a complete scam. First, it would take hundreds of trees to "offset" the carbon used for each person...this is just a get-rich scheme and ,sadly, people are going to bite.
- SuperVepr308, on 01/03/2009, -0/+3Bawaahahahahahahahah! That is the funniest ***** I have read all week. God, I have to get a picture of some dumbass actually buying one. I am begging any of you to send a pic if you get one. I swear I will put it up on my office wall at work.
- QubitTarutaru, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3lol, carbon offsets... lmao!
- Paulorific, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2Ideally we would just eliminate x, except don't live in an ideal world. Another solution would be to add something else to the equation that can offset the effect of x.
A CO2 scrubber, for example. - roho76, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2WARNING!!!
If you purchase Carbon Credits you are the least evolved human species on the planet. Please note this and proceed to the nearest Human Decommissioning Center. - djholybolt, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2for $50,000 I'll let you drive your Hummer all you want.
- pathouston22, on 01/03/2009, -2/+4Can I invest into this company to make money off liberals?
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2Damn, this scam is better than the Pet Rock of the 70s.
Just another feel-good way for rich people to think they are buying redemption. - supermanred, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2Nope, sorry. We've been throwing our money at corrupt nepotistic governments for hundreds of years and they still haven't gone away!
- stuartbryant, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2Except that y != f(x)
y = f(a,b,c, ... , x, z) - zona, on 01/03/2009, -1/+3I am setting up kiosks in airports near those kiosks that, when someone buys offsets, will trap the buyer inside a "ring of stupidity". They then can pay $50 dollars to buy "***** Offsets" and then they can leave. The money will be used to burn a book.
- MWeather, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1Doesn't seem vague to me. In fact, it looks pretty damn specific. I can't imagine how the reporter could have missed it.
http://www.3degreesinc.com/products/carbon_offset/
http://www.3degreesinc.com/knowledge/projects/ - dumbducky, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1"If it was up to me the entire world would be powered by solar alone. "
If it were up to you, energy prices would be way up, and the economy would be in the ditch. - compulsive1, on 01/03/2009, -1/+2This looks very much like a web page for a missionary church that solicits people's funds. There are a few pictures of all the good the church is doing that come from a few real projects. Then everyone who contributes feels like they are helping a real cause. No accounting is ever published.
It's a scam. - mehan, on 01/03/2009, -2/+3They couldn't have picked a more appropriate place for this.
- teh_spazz, on 01/03/2009, -9/+10Oh look, another power user gets a frontpaged article.
- PhantomPhoenix, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1You obviously don't get where I'm coming from...
The whole idea of the average person offsetting carbon is a scam.
Reduction is the way to go.
And how does one reduce? By getting environmentally progressive cars and utilizing sustainable energy such as the sun.
The only way to truly offset carbon is the plant trees, but the amount of trees needed are just not going to be gotten with average citizens buying 'carbon credits'. 'Carbon credits' really only work on large industrial scales with polluting companies paying to have large tracts of trees planted and governments facilitating the trading of these credits. - darladoon, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1"The only problem is that global warming extremists think the only way to stop it is by not using fossil fuels at all"
dude, if fossil fuels (X) cause climate change (Y), then it obviously follows that in order to prevent Y, you need to limit or eliminate X.
i wouldn't call that logic "extremist". - terenceyap7, on 01/04/2009, -1/+2Why can't people just travel less by doing more online and over the phone?
- supermanred, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1This is a great idea.
I will soon be selling *****-offsetting credits. Punched your girlfriend? Send me 500 bucks and I'll make sure that 50 other females are treated to a day at the spa. Lied to your mother? Send me 10 bucks and I will tell truths to over 20 other mothers. Stole from your workplace? Send me 1000 bucks and I will install security cameras at a random workplace.
Help make the world a better place by sending me your ***** money! - lamejoketeller, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1explain why
- partrow, on 01/03/2009, -1/+2What do these scam "carbon offsets" look like?
- bmcnally, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1Haha, or modern day indulgences.
- slapthemonkey, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1A great idea
- darladoon, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1just keep on truckin' boy. love it. love you, boy!
- Paulorific, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1What do you mean? I think it's pretty clear most of our energy will be solar in 100 years. I can't imagine anyone using anything but solar in that time.
- OldDrtySapper, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1lol and now we see the real reason for the global warming scare.
- MWeather, on 01/03/2009, -1/+1"As in, how will we gauge the success or failure of our actions ten years from now?"
With thermometers? - AWBoy666, on 01/03/2009, -7/+7It's the liberal version of terrorism. They are used in exactly the same way.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+0Some idiots will buy anyhting!! Just call it "green" "organic" "natural" and people will buy it not even understanding what those terms really mean! I laugh at airline passengers in general - this scam artist certaily found a gullible audience.
