- BigManOnCampus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Uh, they have trailers that you can attach that will take groceries and won't kill you like that ***** design would.
- crazzy88ss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12What happened to the baskets on the front/back of the bike...?
- herm1t, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I made one of these a few years ago. Unfortunately it was very hard to ride. You steer by leaning instead of using the handle bars. It is also worth noting that it handled better with the weight of my friend in the cart than with no weight at all.
The shopping cart bike lasted only for a few days before stress on the front wheels bent them. (I welded two forks to the front of the cart, so instead of having 4 small wheels and one bike wheel, there were two bike wheels in front, and the regular wheel in back) I would assume trying to gain speed and stability with shopping cart wheels (as pictured) would be a pain in the ass. - 11Heather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11At first glance I thought he was stealing it!
- Leopards, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Probably wouldn't work too well in my area! Potholes would be a killer with those tiny wheels!!
- dschep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The bike pictured is from instructables ( http://www.instructables.com/id/EOHJ5QSF5HVPDCE/ ) and is rather badly made because the cart is zip tied to the fork as opposed to something like it being welded.
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7How is this a 'Green' Idea? Is this supposed to be an alternative to the Car with a Shopping Cart welded to the front?
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Really crappy design in many ways. Various sizes of useful bike baskets and packs are not hard to come by.
- madk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5or you could put a basket on your bike...just saying. Not quite sure how this is "greener" than walking though.
- Jozer99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3From an engineering standpoint, the way he has it designed is very dangerous. Just welding a standard grocery cart where the front wheel should be is signing your own death certificate. Those carts can barely handle 1MPH, let alone 10-20 MPH from a decent biker. They have awful little caster wheels, and are made of heavy steel. What I would recommend would be some sort of tricycle. The basket would go between the two wheels, either in front of or behind the driver, whichever configuration you prefer. An aluminum basket would be much lighter and plenty strong.
- bdbr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If you have 12 bags of groceries, I doubt you'll be making much progress with this thing either.
- megaloid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Trust me, they're a pain to use--unwieldy and, depending upon your locale, prone to being stolen by crankheads looking for a rig to haul their junk around. A very practical setup is a basic commuter-type bike with a rear rack and some collapsible Wald side baskets that can accommodate a pair of grocery bags. These are sturdy and don't affect handling much, even when heavily laden. I keep seeing more people using this setup as gas prices rise.
- drlog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2At first glance I thought "LOL, how is he going to steer it?"
- cmgriffi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3thats retarded
- scrag10, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I thought all grocery carts were "green."
- dschep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And if you have really huge loads to carry, an extracycle rig or a trailer.
- eatbeefjerky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nifty idea, poor execution. Consider how difficult shopping carts BY THEMSELVES are to steer, then try adding a bike and 10 or more mph onto that. I just picked up a rear wheel bike rack with baskets on each side for 35 dolla. Perfect for carting all my crap (including groceries and other large-ish purchases as long as I don't buy too many of either) around campus.
- navitatl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I carry groceries on my bike a lot, and I don't need some retarded-ass shopping cart deathtrap.
-Wear a backpack and shove uncrushable stuff in there
-Get a rack for the back wheel, some side panniers, and a sturdy bag to set on top. You can carry a surprising amount of stuff. - slantyeyed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what do you do when it's raining or snowing?
- HanSolo69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1an XL timbuktu bag does me just fine for grocery shopping.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I enjoyed your spam. Check out my feelings about it here: FOAD

- bdbr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All you need is a rider in blue jeans and no shirt, and you got yerself a redneck joke...no alteration is needed to the contraption.
- laxmaniac3773, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1those were the fun days! and it was only because the metal was crap.
- bookishboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1+1 on the Wald collapsing side-baskets. Each one is exactly the size of a paper grocery bag. Combined with small bungie cargo nets, I've carried as many as 3 full grocery bags home.... 1 in each of the baskets, and another on top of the rack and held down with bungie nets. Ironically, this setup got stolen while locked up to a bike rack. This begs the question of how bad trailers are anyway.
One attractive option is here:

Expensive, but with accessories, it can detach from your bike and become your shopping cart as well. Try bringing a bike + shopping cart, or a bike-with-baskets into a grocery store. It's also less expensive if you're looking to go car-free. Compared to the ongoing costs of car ownership, bike + trailer may be quite a bit cheaper than car + insurance + gasoline. - mishabear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If you have 12 bags of groceries, I doubt you'll be walking.
- T8erT0T, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Hills must be a joy with this thing.
I see an effort and good intentions, but not the greatest concept. - D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I tried something like that once.....turns out I'm /really/ bad at welding....
- catatonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Personally I think a long adult trike with a method to nest the cart inside it's back end would work better. Trikes to me are the bicycle equivalent of a big truck.
...oh, and add hydraulic disc brakes to the wheels, that way it has some decent stopping power. I know how bad the brakes on some adult trikes suck, and many of them would be outright dangerous if they had a loaded shopping cart loaded to it as well. - cptn_cardboard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1At seccond glance, im still wondering that. With a shopping cart (4 wheels) its imposible to bank when he turns :(
- craprock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think it's an inventive and unique idea but there are trailers.
http://www.bobtrailers.com/index.php - mishabear, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can see how leaning into turns would be difficult with those four wheels out front. I could see this done better with longer forks and a single small wheel (20"?) on the front forks to clear the basket. Then weld the cage to the full forks and remove the four crappy wheels. This would allow leaning into your turns only on two wheels so it handles better.
It would be a bit front heavy though. Maybe you could find a means to add another 20" wheel out front so you have 3 inline wheels. Hmm.... - spidoman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You could argue it's greener because the bicycle is in fact the most efficient form of transportation in terms of energy output required, even more efficient than walking. But I suppose manufacturing costs would also have an effect...
- orangealice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Physics anyone? What's the trouble with a little trailer or the baskets that are easily mounted behind the seat of nearly any bicycle?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1WTF! The sad thing is some of you are serious.
- vat0r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Almost a good idea...almost. A much simpler way to cart things around (not to mention safer) would be a backpack or if you're totally granola you could buy yourself one of the new "trendy" organic shopping bags.
- W00DR0W, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Gotta be photoshop, cause that thing couldn't steer at all with those swivel wheels.
- midbc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0yes finally i am so sick and tired of having to gas up the shopping carts at my local grocery store
- itseffinkasey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Maybe if you upgraded the wheels and made them bigger it wouldn't look as sketchy.
- abrecus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0That is amazing
- 955701, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I actually grab groceries on my bike with paniers (sp?). Problem is, you throw your balance off with a real load of groceries. If you made this cart-bike by attaching to the shocks instead of the handle bars I might actually go for it. Plus some more road-worthy wheels.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1sweet concept
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Damn! Thats a better idea than the ***** Segway... this guy deserves a billion dollars.
- pish, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0I loved the idea. Check out this poll about the bike cart: http://www.pollsb.com/polls/poll/1914/the-cart-bike-shopping-cart-combined-with-a-bicycle
