Gravity Waves Make Tornados
science.msfc.nasa.gov — Nature is full of surprises! The first photo in the article links to an MPEG movie -- watch it.

- ElWizardo, on 04/06/2008, -5/+5Very interesting! I'd like to see where this goes.
- JigoroKano, on 04/06/2008, -0/+33For those confused, this has nothing to do with *gravitational* waves generated by astronomical sources.
- dezmo, on 04/06/2008, -0/+6for those still confused, they are called gravity waves because gravity is the restoring force
- dupeduperson, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1then wouldn't waves in the ocean also be called gravity waves? I think they should have chosen a better name for their waves. Gravitational waves has already been taken (although yet to be officially detected)
- dezmo, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1yes, water waves are also gravity waves

- jm1234567890, on 04/06/2008, -0/+21Editor's note: The gravity waves of this story should not be confused with the gravitational waves of astrophysics. One is an ordinary wave of water or air; the other is a ripple in the fabric of spacetime itself.
- 0akley, on 04/06/2008, -0/+11Same vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXnkzeCU3bE
- DLuckyE, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3Nice video, i've never seen that before. Does that only happen in certain regions?
- Texmurphy01, on 04/06/2008, -2/+8MPEG movie, you say...
- Trevordtodd, on 04/06/2008, -2/+4So, if this was not Xenu...
- YoctoYotta, on 04/06/2008, -1/+1It was Xenu. Now, let's forget we thought otherwise.
- RickyTheRiot, on 04/06/2008, -9/+3Dreadful title, utterly misleading. Gravity waves are distortions in gravitational force not this. It's an interesting article so I don't want to bury it, but what is discussed is not "gravity waves".
- robeph, on 04/06/2008, -0/+5No, not quite.... those are Gravitational Waves, as noted by the author. A mild difference in naming there, but way different subject matter, the article is correct.
- frogman54, on 04/06/2008, -3/+9Someone should tell Pat Robertson this. He was pretty sure that gay folks were causing tornadoes.
- Arcnite, on 04/06/2008, -1/+1awesome.
- Enfecktion, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4i thought i was getting rick-rolled...i was actually disappointed.
- ultralights, on 04/06/2008, -8/+3gravity waves? WTF? waves in the atmosphere are caused by winds! and the interaction of faster jet steam winds with lower level winds, which move in different directions to each other due to the corrolis forces. or air moving over rising terrain. but gravity waves?

( science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/11oct_undularbore.htm ) - MistySteele, on 04/06/2008, -5/+1> Gravity Waves Make Tornados
He keeps using that word . . . I do not think it means what he thinks it means. - vroom101, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Here's what I'm wondering: Is the atmospheric gravity wave's initial impulse, i.e., the underlying triggering mechanism(s) that start/create the undular bore, the same for (A) the hugely huge rogue (freak) wave that -- even on a calm sea -- comes out of nowhere on the ocean; and (B) a tsunami?
- 3leggedHorse, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1 That story must be right it's on a NASA page.
- 83457, on 04/06/2008, -1/+2Definitely a bit confusing given it has nothing to do with gravity but now I'm just getting picky
- tbom, on 04/06/2008, -1/+2I'm surprised that someone at nasa couldn't get "tornadoes" right. Heck, the digg spellcheck catches "tornados"
more iem webcam stuff here: http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/cool/- vroom101, on 04/06/2008, -0/+2"Tornadoes" = "Tornados" = both are correctly spelled.

- tcpip4lyfe, on 04/06/2008, -2/+1I hate QT.
- bchloe82, on 04/06/2008, -2/+1Pay no attention to the HAARP behind the curtain because it's obviousIy a harmless study of the ionosphere! Whew, I'm glad those are just gravity waves!
- TheSuperunknown, on 04/07/2008, -0/+0Weather as you know it occurs in the troposphere - at least 38km BELOW the ionosphere.
That's okay though because I bet you think NEXRAD is a conspiracy as well.

- ahughes, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Wow, I would digg that twice if I could.
- Refah, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Those anomalies are a bitch.
- Fangsinmybeard, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1This may prove to give a higher accuracy to prediction of other weather related phenomena.
- cnorris1, on 04/07/2008, -1/+0Trailer parks cause tornado's
