- sockpuppets, on 08/20/2008, -3/+36It's better than the $0 you gave.
- Oddog, on 08/19/2008, -7/+26cool! I agree with their decision!

- firebirdx01, on 08/20/2008, -8/+1910 million is not even a drop in the bucket considering the uh- 4.2 BILLION Net profit that Google makes.
- HxChris91, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10Their facilities are like big playgrounds...
- nikothefinn, on 08/20/2008, -3/+11Google Earth, Google Space, Google Moon, Google Mars, the ill-advised Froogle and now Google Earth's Inner Core. Not quite as catchy.
- juliandunbar11, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8..ORPHANED children's tears.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 08/20/2008, -12/+19WOW! $10 mil? That's probably a fraction of their petty cash. I bet they spend more on fussball tables. Someone give them a cookie.
- jotate, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Foosball. Fussball doesn't sound enjoyable at all.
- eebeelive, on 08/19/2008, -8/+15way to go baybeee

- chemicalrxn, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Um, the last time i checked ten million dollars was still a lot of money. Sure they could have invested more, but it's probably more than anyone else is putting into geothermal development.

"Microsoft donates more than $72 million to 25,000 nonprofits"

"The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation spends billions of dollars each year on international health programs. Its contributions now rival the total annual budget of the United Nations' World Health Organization."

"Bill Gates has donated approximately $258 million to fight malaria"
etc, etc, etc....... - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4$10 Million? I like the idea, but isn't that less than the monthly champagne and hookers budget for the San Francisco office?
- beerncheese, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4I heard Microsoft is developing ways to harness the energy in the XBox 360 brick.
- TimDigg, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4Please don't spell "baby" like that ever again.
- RadiatedAnt, on 08/20/2008, -1/+5As much as I love ***** the RIAA I still dugg you down for the oldness of the meme.
- jonnyboy1544, on 08/20/2008, -0/+410 million is nothing... Chevron has invested billions. Oh but they are big oil so it doesn't count.
- bonez56, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3These comments suck!!!
- Torpov, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3Unless you're German.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3to google spending $10 million on geothermal is like you or me buying a non disposable shopping bag.
- tk0680, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3People with controversial, out-of-the-blue opinions don't need anything as soiled as FACTS to back them up. Christ.
- Philmer, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3Google Empire, you forgot Google Empire. Don't do that again, or they will come. and there won't be cake.
- bsmeteronhigh2, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4I saw their presentation at the National Clean Energy Summit in Nevada, today. Very impressive. It was interesting that the gentleman in charge of this referred to Google as an engineering company. I think with T.Boone Pickens going for wind energy and Google going for geothermal, we are poised for change. Of course, the big issue that seemed to be mentioned in every panel was the need for a new power transmission line infrastructure. That and the need to lengthen the alternative energy tax situation to better address the long term investment nature of the change. Of course, there are many hurdles in place, ranging from the current coal fired power plants and the huge investment by major banks, and that all of this would go away if oil becomes suddenly cheap.
- Cryptkeeper, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3well, my post was not shameless self-promotion, we don't even have a site running ;) I'm happy Google is getting people interested in it, and I'm proud that my father has taken the past year to study and get certified in this amazing technology! excuse the .com. I couldn't come up with a better name :(
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3This is actually a fairly clever comment, if you take the time to read it. Why is it being buried?
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2Scam...an accurate description for a process that involves using a car battery to generate hydrogen that's burned in an engine that turns an alternator that charges the car battery.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -4/+6Google will become sentient in the near future. Be very afraid.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3Google seems to actually be doing something, unlike Al Gore - who will happily make money from videos, but will go around running a house which uses the electricity of a small city. I mean, Al Gore wants you to know about global warming, but will NEVER offer any solutions, so YOU will end up paying a carbon tax.
- tme2k24, on 08/20/2008, -7/+910.25 mil?
OK google, Microsoft raises you to $1.25 billion.. - Zaeboes, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3I love nuclear as much as the next guy, but you do realize that geothermal is essentially the exact same thing minus fuel rods, right? If geothermal is viable in a certain location, then I say go for it.
- airstrike, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2he uses solar energy to power his house. it's completely clean.
neeeext. - Ovalteen, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2They'd be better off spending the $10 million figuring out a way to harness the thermal energy within every one of their datacentres. For an organisation that is as dependent on cheap, plentiful electricity as Google is, you'd think they could afford to splurge a little more than $10 million.
- BluFire, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Yea but Solar Power you store power
and use it at any time
And who is going to stay up all night? - nick1971, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1Political donations?
- tvardovsky, on 08/20/2008, -0/+0so safe and efficient that the construction of a nuclear plant requires 100% federal loan guarantee?
another example of a bloated corporate lobby and shortsighted waste-handling issues.
propose a scheme to make self-heated waste tiles or release less hot water into effluents and you might be on to something...
75% of the US grid can be supplied by farming vast swathes of govt (waste)land in the SW with solar panels. - gaapgod, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1Google investing 10M means .08% of their $12 billion investment portfolio.

It's pretty much like putting 10 cents into a slot machine and hoping to hit the jackpot. They don't care if they lose it.
Not exactly what I'd call "hitting the big time". - TypeEE, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1It's different. It's very hard for cooperate to budget cash for researchs that might or might not give return
- nick1971, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1And where in US politics are special interest groups not influencing policy?
- swAppp, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1But will it be enough to power up google engine?
- lovecss, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1Welcome to the wonderful world of business.
- invinciblechunk, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2Fighting broke out overnight between rival factions along the Israeli-Syrian border. Initial reports claim Israeli jet fighters bombed a guerrilla base.
- Smwbigboss, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1That doesn't produce any power, it only stores it. Think of it as a battery.
- dennisplucinik, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2dude WTF are you talking about? English please.
- gubatron2, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1and except at night. If anything invest in high altitude wind (Generators on Kites), or solutions with waves along the coasts. Solar dies at night and the current yield is not even 30%, for now it's all a brute force approach with solar.
There should also be a way to convert to electricity (thermo-electric) or store all the heat of the summer and use it during the winter.
Geothermal is cool to me. - gubatron2, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1man bear pig!
- gubatron2, on 08/20/2008, -1/+2cheap bastards
