- envyme, on 03/29/2008, -14/+203Much easier on the eyes.
- madacc, on 03/29/2008, -21/+175You know what they say.. once you go black you never go back! :O
- PharmaPhool, on 03/29/2008, -9/+141I don't want to sound negative, or unreceptive of the idea of conserving energy... as a professional electrical engineer I have spent my career trying to use electricity more efficiently.
That said, turning off lights for an hour does nothing to conserve energy. Power plants don't have an instant on/off switch. The power not being used for lighting is being redirected elsewhere in the grid, and at best is being used to pump water back up behind hydro-electric dams or possibly just being dissipated as heat at the generating station.
Now, if instead they had told everyone to take an hour to replace every light bulb in the house with a high-efficiency type I could get behind the idea.... but once again I think that someone has tried for a quick cheap politically visible feel-good ploy instead of a more meaningful but more costly not-so-cheap, not-so-feel-good solution. - sniper6121, on 03/29/2008, -9/+133Google finally admits being on the dark side.
- MattJF317, on 03/29/2008, -23/+146ctrl + option + apple + 8
Ha! Take that Google! - HalfBurntToast, on 03/29/2008, -14/+116They should keep it this way. Definitely easier to read.
- Jeezoflip, on 03/29/2008, -4/+88i love how they only do it to the homepage and not the search query pages
- ligyron, on 03/29/2008, -2/+78what?
ctrl + windows key + batman symbol + 1 - madwh, on 03/29/2008, -6/+66Great opportunity for burglars.
- BryanJK, on 03/29/2008, -7/+66Finally cool to see this get official, even if it is temporary
- lohphat, on 03/29/2008, -37/+95Another hippie feel-good empty gesture. Soon forgotten. *yawn*
- mrbrianxyz, on 03/29/2008, -3/+58can we have a black digg too?
- envyme, on 03/29/2008, -2/+56"it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display."
- Qays, on 03/29/2008, -3/+45From the google site : "As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative."
Google is only raising awareness - xptoast, on 03/29/2008, -2/+43Google even states it saves no energy by being black.
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -1/+40I don't think Digg can take down Google. That would seriously be internet-breaking if we had that kind of power.
- zephyear, on 03/29/2008, -3/+41because the internet would collapse?
- DeskFlyer, on 03/29/2008, -4/+39Doesn't the backlight stay on regardless of what configuration the LC's are in?
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -23/+53Technically, using pure black DOES save a slight bit of energy, when you consider how most displays render colors. By default, LCDs are pure black, because of what the first two letters in "LCD" stand for. Liquid crystal. LCDs manipulate the liquid crystal in each pixel on the display to thin it out or change the color of it (the same way mood rings work, basically).
By rendering a black screen, it's not having to manipulate the pixels as much. However, liquid crystal manipulation is hardly energy consuming, so for all intents and purposes, it really doesn't make any difference.
If you want to really save energy with your LCD display, don't leave the brightness all the way up. THAT is what will suck the most energy.
Turn the brightness down; bad for the environment and your vision to leave it all the way up. - telegon, on 03/29/2008, -4/+32You know who's really gonna kick this up a notch? Homeless people. They don't have any lights - so they're all like "Psh, what's the big deal?"
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -9/+36lol, troll, lol
- Kratos76, on 03/29/2008, -0/+27Google, Earth Hour. Not Google Earth, hour. I'm just sayin.
- cranky71, on 12/01/2009, -1/+27Let's turn off ATM machines, hospitals, and runway lights too! Thank you for enlightening me.
- SKick, on 03/29/2008, -2/+28By killing just one American, you can save 11256 kWh per year! Just imagine the energy savings that abortions can offer.
- cranky71, on 12/01/2009, -1/+25You show your power bill who's boss
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -2/+25When i went to google today, i thought i had got pwn'd, but now i realize its earth hour
- ace1220, on 03/29/2008, -1/+23That is a keystroke to invert the screen on a mac.
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -7/+27How about we just kill each other until everyone is dead, that way we can all beat global warming.
- sharkd, on 03/29/2008, -0/+17Great time to suggest it -- during the NCAA tournament...
- jeriqo, on 03/29/2008, -1/+18Switches the screen to negative under Mac OS X.
- Chilian, on 03/29/2008, -1/+17Or black men
- jodofashodo, on 03/29/2008, -1/+16I've told my friends who have been using blackie that they're doing nothing, and finally the god known as GOOG finally puts it to rest, Blackie does *****...just recycle more instead, jeez..
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -0/+15But adds to the reserves if the reservoir gets lower in the future.. Ie, waste the energy you have now (it's not like they have big batteries they charge up) to ensure you can get some of that back in a time of need.
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -1/+16Yes, which is why the difference in energy usage is such a minute detail that it doesn't matter.
- Scheissen, on 03/29/2008, -0/+15Pure black would mean the monitor doesn't light the pixel up. I'm still waiting for OLED technology to arrive to do this.
It's been said that lighting black pixels takes just as much energy as white pixels on an LCD display. - ianthepetrock, on 03/29/2008, -1/+16Care to be the first killed?
- variant5, on 03/29/2008, -5/+20You show 'em, Regal. Who cares if you're the sole person in your 'hood with your lights on and your neighbours only ever look at you again with pity? You've got a mission and you should stick to it.
I say power to ya! (no pun intended) - Unriggable, on 03/29/2008, -0/+14Glasses, my friend. If you can't tell the difference betwwen a and p, glasses.
- mehan, on 03/29/2008, -0/+14don't forget to also turn on the washer, dryer, and the dishwasher. can you also turn on heating and air conditioning at the same time?
- rawrzzz, on 03/29/2008, -1/+14Michael Jackson...?
- icemanxp, on 03/29/2008, -0/+13ctrl + window key + (n or m) for compliz fusion
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -1/+14It also takes a lot more energy to raise a stupid kid than a smart one. Your poor, tired parents.
- jlmillstein, on 03/30/2008, -0/+12Mac users,
If you like the darker screen, check out this app.

Also for mac users: ctrl + option + command + 8 - dinostabOMG, on 03/29/2008, -0/+12Isn't Google solar-powered anyway?
- funkydude101, on 03/29/2008, -0/+12unfortunately, most of the population doesn't understand this metaphor- and will really think there is more power being "saved"
- theHM, on 03/29/2008, -3/+15It's not a "gesture" since they openly admit that it doesn't actually save energy; the point is that it raises awareness. Given how popular Google is, and how noticeable a change it is, it will probably remind an awful lot of people of the need to save energy.
- Girlieq3, on 03/29/2008, -3/+14...Obviously you've never heard the expression.
- FunkyLlama, on 03/29/2008, -3/+14Because they've given up hope for America ever giving a crap about the environment.
