"Methane levels in the atmosphere have more than tripled since pre-industrial times, accounting for around one-fifth of the human contribution to greenhouse gas-driven global warming. Until recently, the leveling off of methane levels had suggested that the rate of its emission from the Earth's surface was approximately balanced by the rate of its destruction in the atmosphere."
"Note the term: 'human contribution to greenhouse gas-driven global warming."
There will always be some human contribution to the environment as it is a ecosystem. However, what needs to be studied further -- and the point of the paper's authors -- is that there appears to be a self-regulating feedback loop where increased methane levels are reduced to tolerable levels by the action of OH radicals. Why this mechanism failed and there was a simultaneous rise in methane or if our understanding of this mechanism is faulty is what is to be studied.
No one can claim that the global climate is static or that man does not influence the ecosystem, what is disputed is that we need carbon sequestration using a carbon cap and trading system -- all of which is unlikely to influence global climate change in a significant way that will be measurable in our lifetime. In fact, it might not even be apparent in 600 - 1000 years when the climate could be entering another mini-ice age. Point being: you don't make public policy based on things you don't understand to produce results which are not measurable. - commenter10, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Can't wait for greenfyre's take ...
