- mickstephenson, on 07/13/2008, -1/+26***** those corals, they have been living it up for too long, eventually they have to realise life isn't spring break and some day they have to settle down and raise children, sex isn't about fun its about babies.
- inactive, on 07/13/2008, -3/+23Can I blame my lack of sexual activity on Global Warming too?
- DavidtheMavin, on 11/11/2008, -1/+18Looks like science might have to figure out a way to turn down the lights and put on some Marvin Gaye music for these coral?
I know that coral is the lifeblood of the oceans, if they go, the ocean will not be in good shape! - inactive, on 07/13/2008, -1/+16The day global warming stops me from wanting to have sex is the day I trade in my truck for a hybrid.
- squeakyarmadilo, on 07/11/2008, -1/+14This is interesting. I know that at one point I read an article stating that without coral the oceans would die fairly quickly. The two main things that several researchers agree on is that if coral dies, the ocean dies... and if the bees die, the earth itself would wither and die as well. Kind of a good reason to attempt to keep both species alive!
- mediaspree, on 07/13/2008, -0/+13Man, I went snorkeling on a guide boat in the Florida Keys last weekend and the number 1 thing threatening coral is douchebags standing on and kicking it apart with their flippers.
- jbrown101st, on 07/13/2008, -1/+10Agreed. But I'm still a fan of Corals Gone Wild...
- Pili, on 07/13/2008, -0/+8no, corals are technically invertebrates with a symbiotic bacteria inside that perform photosynthesis giving the corals food/energy/color/etc.
- Chainheart, on 07/13/2008, -0/+8I stopped asking that question when I walked into the living room one day and found my two dogs making sweet poochie love - everything gets more action than the average Digger
- psion01, on 07/13/2008, -0/+7Two replies to the same question. Note the difference in tone and educational value.
- Thorpe, on 07/13/2008, -1/+7How do they have sex?
Do they have more sex than Digg users? - schneid4323, on 07/13/2008, -4/+10Well then, we have one option left..
We must build a mirror in space to reflect the sun! - SimonTB, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4Okay it was amusing the first time. Now go away.
- CMiYC, on 07/13/2008, -2/+6So Global Warming is like WoW in the Sea?
- noonions, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4oh come on, that was funny! don't digg that down!
- Jareth86, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Here here fellow patriot!
Global warming is a liberal myth perpetrated to make people rich, just like evolution and gay marriage! Lets see so conclusive proof that these things exist! There are plenty of people who say they don't! - jakdracula, on 07/13/2008, -1/+4Continually Posting about 'Global Warming' threatens the Sex Life of Digg Geeks.
- dxgg, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Sex with coral is overrated.
- chrisinsocalif, on 07/13/2008, -17/+20First conclude that Global Warming is man made, since there is NO CONCLUSIVE PROOF that shows that humans cause any global warming whatsoever. The world does go on natural warming and cooling trends which species do die, but before people start tripping out and spending billions of dollars on green products, please prove its man made. (I will get dugg down by those who believe propaganda, especially from politicians like Al Gore..remember follow the dollar signs)
- inactive, on 07/13/2008, -2/+5without coral reefs coral would die
- dood, on 07/13/2008, -2/+5IMABEANER: Citations, please.
- paker, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Ouch.
- Chainheart, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Try satire, a light-hearted attempt at one, sheesh
- paker, on 07/13/2008, -1/+4The local news had a piece about dieing coral, but the cause was found to be sun screen, not global warming.
- jseres, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3Coral needs to learn a thing or two about abstinence.
- Jareth86, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2I go to Iqaluit, Nunavut every year up near the arctic circle. Trust me, this whole "Global warming myth" is ***** real. Arctic Countries are in the heart of the damage, and have to deal with it on a regular basis.
Most of you people arguing against it (in fear that if it is real, the government may act and you may be inconvenienced) need to get around more and open your damn eyes. Stop buying into the words of every Southpark episode and moron with an agenda that you come across. - SimonTB, on 07/13/2008, -6/+8Look at all the data from ice drilling and other ways of testing different levels of various gasses at different times in history. Now see how fast and how much the temperature has risen.
It is either a warming period that is influenced to be worse than others, or it is caused by humans. - thedinomeister, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2regardless of whether you believe it or not, this page is hilarious if you read through it! thanks for the link!
- replaysMike, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3Global Warming has been threatening my sex life for years... no news here.
- Chainheart, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2It wasn't directed at you or the original poster - how could it be a strawman argument?
- dood, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3I'm not a scientist, and I don't know if this is actually the case, but I believe it's possible for both global warming and sun screen to threaten corals in different ways.
- freqk, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2Wait. Corals have a "Sex Life"?
- Muyoso, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2I know I am off topic just like elvergudo, but seriously, how does an article make frontpage nearly 2 days after being posted with so few diggs?
- binky79, on 07/13/2008, -2/+4Viva Viagra!
- psion01, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2I'm not so sure. The temperature has been higher and lower in the past. Changes have been more dramatic and swifter. I fail to see how the cause (presumably human industry) makes any difference to coral mortality.
- Chainheart, on 07/13/2008, -6/+8Where have I seen that argument before? Somewhere from the right... it works surprisingly well (read: sadly) for evolution, too:
First conclude that evolution is real, since there is NO CONCLUSIVE PROOF that shows that we evolved from apes. The world does go on natural selection in which microevolution occurs, but before people start tripping out and spending billions of dollars on teaching it, please prove macroevolution. (I will get dugg down by those who believe propaganda, especially from professors like Richard Dawkins..remember follow the devil horns)
Echo chamber! - tehknotte, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2myvine gay
- MrBussi, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2where's the problem with this reasoning: greenhouse gases are known to heat up the atmosphere. the amount of green house gases are going up. we're noticing increases in temperature; seems pretty simple to me?
now it cant be solar activity responsible; thats only been increasing since 1970
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/sun_output_0 ...
you could argue we contribute a small amount to the total greenhouse gases. but we are responisible for most if not all of the increases in greenhouse gases.
if you think it's just part of a natural cycle; then please go ahead explain what causing it? why would a 35% increase in greenhouse gases (http://www.umich.edu/~gs265/society/greenhouse.htm ... not increase temperatures? Past variations are known to be caused by like the Milankovich cycles that caused the ice ages? - Evolutuon, on 07/12/2008, -2/+4When water levels rise enough, most of the coral will be gone anyway.
- SimonTB, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3Without coral, the ocean will get severely ***** up and many species will go extinct or become very rare, but some will survive.
- Damian91, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Maybe most of the corals are just gay...
- aserer511, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Male coral to humans: hey bro, stop cockblocking
- LucerinRed, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2Just to point out, there is conclusive proof that the water temperature hasn't risen at all over the past decade.
- malex, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Well, if that's what the nice people from the corporate think-tanks told you, I guess it must be so.
- slifty, on 07/13/2008, -3/+4Better safe than sorry dude. At any rate, there is plenty of proof that greenhouse gasses are... well.. greenhouse gasses. Go take a vacation on Venus if you need further evidence.
- DerangedPenguin, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2Theoretically, if the planet's surface cooled by radiation alone, then the greenhouse-induced surface temperature would be much warmer, about 350 K (77 °C). Atmospheric motion (convective towers carrying latent and sensible heat upwards and large scale circulation carrying it both upwards and polewards) circumvent much of the greenhouse effect and significantly increase the "escape" of energy to space, leaving Earth's surface more than 60 °C cooler than a static atmosphere would do.
Additionally, greenhouse gases are only able to absorb radiation in very specific electromagnetic frequencies and Earth does not radiate limitless amounts of energy in the appropriate bandwidths. This means there is 'competition' for available energy and significant greenhouse potential is unrealized (carbon dioxide could absorb more than 3 times the energy it currently does in the atmosphere were it not for competition from clouds and water vapor, clouds alone could absorb 50% of available energy but manage to capture just 14% and so on...).
So, despite there being far more greenhouse gas in the atmosphere than required to achieve the current greenhouse effect, something which has been true since before humans discovered fire, evapo-transpiration and thermals transport heat higher in the atmosphere where radiation to space is increased. This is why Earth remains about 15 °C (288 K) rather than about 77 °C (350 K).

- stonewall123, on 07/13/2008, -0/+11 in 5 may be an optimistic figure from what I've seen. Those large snorkeling boats are the worst offenders. However, those boat operators bring the swimmers to very few snorkelling/dive sites. They bring the snorkelers/divers who don't know what they are doing to the same places which are already heavily damaged. They never bring them to unspoiled areas. In that sense they are able to minimize damage to the rest of the reef by controlling where they bring people. Obviously it would be great if those people would be more careful and thoughtful of their surroundings but at least people can learn to appreciate the underwater world in a semi-controlled environment. If you want to do some nice diving (after one has skilled in controlling their bouyancy) you always want to go on a small boat with few other divers (no more than 6 people).
