- babychen, on 05/29/2008, -11/+135Not a bad thing, from an environment point of view. However, I would have been happier if fuel was saved due to conscious decisions rather than due to high prices.
- bixby1, on 05/29/2008, -3/+114I saw an analyst on CNN tell a reporter matter-of-factly that gas would hit $20 a gallon. The reporter laughed. Analyst didn't.
- FeargusMcDuff, on 05/30/2008, -2/+104See! Pirating movies is good for the environment!
- socialpyramid, on 05/29/2008, -12/+102My sister was going to drive from Chicago over to Indiana to see Indiana Jones in Indiana, but scraped that because of gas prices
- maddvibe, on 05/29/2008, -2/+784.3% = 11 billion less miles driven! That is insane.
- FirstDigg, on 05/29/2008, -9/+78Just filled up for $4.17/gal for regular. Ugh. At least I have a hybrid so I only needed 10 gallons and I'm good for another two weeks! :)
- CivicTV, on 08/14/2009, -5/+67Good. She would have been dissapointed. Now she can save money and be dissapointed. ***** George Lucas.
- wishninja, on 05/30/2008, -1/+46I work for an autoparts maker. Our truck exhaust lines have been setting idol for months now yet our small car lines have not been seeing much of an increase either. I do not think it is the gas driving the change overall it does have influence but I think the tanking dollar and rising inflation is causing most of it. I know it is all weakly linked but I think the whole economy is dragging and the first thing people do when they are poor is stay home.
- tifosiuno, on 05/30/2008, -0/+39I ride my motorcycle rain or shine, they call me hard core, I am just gas poor.
- indnxbllr21, on 05/30/2008, -2/+38Now i don't drive to the clubs and meet the ladies due to fear of gas....oh wait, i never did
- agentb111, on 05/29/2008, -2/+35$4.17 a gallon here too, ridiculous. carpooling and public transportation are rapidly becoming a much more viable alternative for me.
- blackgt93, on 05/30/2008, -1/+33I was gonna drive to Dallas (from KC) to watch some Dallas re-runs, but decided not to because I hate Dallas (the show) and I'm not stupid.
- bitterbug, on 05/30/2008, -4/+35The irony of calling it a sport utility vehicle is that most are not designed to function off a paved road. Even a little off-road use can seriously ***** them up. So what are people paying all the extra money for? Status.... oooooooh.
- itsthemechanic, on 05/30/2008, -5/+33I'm glad she did, that's an outrageous waste of energy anyway. That movie doesn't play in her state? WTF.
- Gnasche, on 05/30/2008, -3/+28Why do we drive almost twice as much as we did in 1983? I know the population didn't double.
- EenMadcat, on 05/30/2008, -1/+25Here in the Netherlands we pay 1.60 euro for a liter Euro95 (=regular, i guess), that converted to dollars/liters is 9.37 dollar per gallon.
- sublimemm, on 05/30/2008, -1/+25There aren't 300 million drivers in a the US
- ehasley, on 05/30/2008, -13/+36Hybrid's are over rated. Sorry man, but they are. If you want to see real full efficiency go get a diesel. Oh wait... you can't in our country because we have a gay perception that diesel is still dirty and sooty. Yea, diesel is more expensive but the mileage is better than your little hybrid. Not to mention the damn thing actually has something useful... POWER. What happens in a few years when your precious battery cells go dead? Or better yet, everyone thinking hybrids are green and eco-friendly when they are filled with POISONOUS lithium cells.
- decibelx, on 05/30/2008, -5/+28Awesome. Honestly, people need to stop wasting gas on stupid trips like that.
- liamvictor, on 05/30/2008, -6/+26If you had to buy fuel at UK prices you'd never drive again.
- sungoddess808, on 05/29/2008, -2/+22Unfortunately, most Americans do not think that way. High gas prices means fewer road trips to Reno/Tahoe or the Napa Valley.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -2/+22I have a Huffy. Suck tailwind beeeotches.
- chemrat, on 05/30/2008, -3/+22The biggest problem may be with food prices. I don't really feel like going to work, but I do have to eat.
This result makes me wonder who still takes the credit for destroying the railroads and subsidizing highways and trucking. That was planning ahead! - shankarganesh, on 05/30/2008, -3/+19gas prices are shooting up in India too
- gtluke, on 05/30/2008, -0/+16when gas hit $2.00 a coupe years ago i started to do the same thing.
until some camry driver decided his u-turn was more important than me riding through the intersection and he completely broadsided me..
now i walk funny - itsthemechanic, on 05/30/2008, -0/+15Well, enforce some ***** discipline among your carpool buddies (eg. you are late more than once = no ride to work) and get up an hour earlier. Life is tough, but hey. It's still peaches and cream compared to the life the people live that create the goods that stock your local Walmart.
- sirmcdiznuts, on 05/30/2008, -6/+20Time to buy an electric car soon. Thankfully I live in NYC and the transportation around here is easy.
- jasdf, on 05/30/2008, -1/+15The market doesn't think this is the right price, the speculators think this is the right price.
- Scynet, on 05/30/2008, -0/+13That's 23 000 times to Moon and back.
- PatrickA, on 05/30/2008, -6/+18In the UK it costs £65 to fill up the tank of my car. Outrageous.
- itsthemechanic, on 05/30/2008, -4/+16I'll trade you my 1.51eur per litre ($8.75 a gallon) for your $4.45.
Stop whining and get a motorcycle. - buddamus, on 05/30/2008, -5/+16People driving less can only be a good thing
- GoatMonkey2112, on 05/30/2008, -1/+12Between 300,000,000 people, it's not that much.
- richbradshaw, on 05/30/2008, -9/+20Indiana Jones just isn't the same when it's not in Indiana.
- ehasley, on 05/30/2008, -2/+13Furthermore...
I drive a sports coupe, a Pontiac GTO (Holden Monaro for you aussie's) with a 6.0 Liter engine and 400 horsepower, I can pretty much blow the doors off most cars on the road. I'm still able to get 30 miles to the gallon on the highway... So if my car with an engine OVER 3 times the size of yours can get 30... why aren't you closer to 80 or 90... - bxblox, on 05/30/2008, -2/+12How much of it is taxes? Stop comparing Denmark
- saltinekracka20, on 05/30/2008, -1/+11I don't know anyone with this mindset in America. You should probably get to know more Americans.
- viggooo, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1037 miles each
- hfactor, on 05/30/2008, -1/+11You might need to actually invest in public transportation... or move closer to work... It's not like "the other variables" were constants.
- dleesgeetar, on 05/30/2008, -3/+13was going to get a car after college because of convenience, but hell with it, bikes and buses for me
- GoatMonkey2112, on 05/30/2008, -4/+14Congratulations! You're clearly superior to everyone!
- edebolt, on 05/30/2008, -2/+12this is seriously cutting into my porn and dirty massage budget... Save me OPEC !!!
- 9bpm9, on 05/30/2008, -0/+10No, mostly speculators.
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -4/+13Yeah its going to get worse before it gets better but at least there are less drivers on the road.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -1/+10This is beyond true. Speculators are fueling a market that is already speculated to death....It's causing the price per barrel to spin out of control.
- richbradshaw, on 05/30/2008, -8/+17Thing is, it is more expensive in other countries, and public transport is just as expensive. In the UK gas is around 7-8 dollars per gallon.
On the other side though, most other countries put their citizens first and invest in infrastructure rather than in wars that have nothing to do with them. American really seems to be screwing the average citizen in pretty much every way possible.
Oh, and ***** the RIAA, and Ubuntu ftw and Apple is awesome, and M$ is rubbish and Ron Paul (whoever the hell he is) says "I can haz cheezburger!" and Kevin Rose is amazing. - millypede, on 05/30/2008, -0/+9You are joking, If we had decent transport system yeah great, if you dont live in Central london or any large city, you cant get from A-B with at least a few changes and more expense as you have to get there as most of them are on the outskirts of town, I used to live in the middle of the country and public transport was 1 bus every 2 hours, and one back every 1 and a half, I would have to catch a bus 3 hours before I started work to get me into the city, catch a second bus to get to the train-station which was on the other side of the city, then a hour journey on the train to work, then a good 40 min walk (as no regular buses from train to work), or get on the Motorway (Freeway) and be at work in 30 mins, yeah great if you have got public transport that works, but im afraid some of have to travel further to work than our local doorstep im afraid, I do a 54 miles round trip each day. I would love to have a better more regular system of transport, that was also affordable and quick, but im afraid in the UK it just doesn't happen outside of London.
- Tyfud, on 05/30/2008, -4/+13I really hope this would be the case. I've been hoping for a $10-20+ a gallon gas price for a while now. With gas that expensive, *everything* in America uses petrol fuel in some way to either get produced or distributed.
We'd be forced with two options 1.) Clean up our mess and look for alternative fuels 2.) Collapse the economy and start over, this time without such a complete dependence on foreign resources".
Either way, Sweden's looking like a nice place to visit...permanently... -
