- av4rice, on 04/16/2009, -0/+10You're on a lopsided birthday cake
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -1/+10Wow you learn something everyday.
- BoneStamp, on 04/16/2009, -1/+8So, half of what you're eating is still alive?
- fragmit, on 04/16/2009, -0/+6"To all my little Hulkamaniacs, say your prayers, make an effort to record and manage non-target species sustainably regarding large volumes of capture fish, and you will never go wrong!"
-Hulk Hogan, 1988 - swerwerwer, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5People who think that throwing back tons of dead fish into the sea will just go to feeding the rest of water creatures, its important to realize that living fish are a lot more useful to the ecosystem overall than dead ones.... A lot of creatures on the planet don't eat things that are already dead (that they didn't kill) and dead things obviously can't reproduce... This is just an important example of the waste that is going on in our food industry and that we need to put environmental principles before economic ones so that in the future we still have a large variety of fish to eat. The WWE jokes are kinda lame too... I don't mean to be a stickler but over fishing and unsustainable food practices is a really big deal that effects everyone because things like species becoming extinct is a domino effect and we humans are not really prepared.

- ureshiidesuka, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4the wwf should challenge those fishing fleets to a cage match. no holds barred.
- ww3ace, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4HEY! I WANTED TO EAT THOSE!
- BoneStamp, on 04/16/2009, -6/+10Although it would be better to avoid this, it's not entirely wasted -- it will obviously decompose in the ocean and be food for other species.
- frieddonuts, on 04/16/2009, -1/+5Maybe your family uses responsible fishing techniques. The worst types of fishing are bottom trawling (pulls up all natural corals and anything above them indiscriminately) and long-line fishing, which captures anything that grabs a hook (sharks, sea turtles, etc).
- EricAnderton, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4"The ULTIMATE WARRIOR knows about fish. He is a fish-like god. HE has this net, and that net is coming for you Hogan. And like that net, I have holes - holes that will catch you and throw you out like a tuna-trawler's by-catch. That's right HOGAN, I'm coming for you with these two meaty fish-hooks of awesomeness. There's something fishy in here, and it's your style, because you stink. But the ULTIMATE WARRIOR doesn't stink - he smells like power, like fury, and like thunder that will vaporize the very carcass that you'll leave in the ring."
-Ultimate Warrior, on serious amounts of *something*, 1988 - Sarthax, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Giant whales have baleen and eat krill not fish. Smaller whales have teeth and hunt fish. I doubt a small whale could eat a whole school at once.
- phosphite, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3WWF will now get WWE to enforce this!
- mavranos, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3No BS here. Shrimp trawlers toss 7-8 pounds of by-catch for every pound of shrimp they harvest.
- brad3378, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3It's hard to debait that they're Reely Hooked on the pier to pier Net work.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 04/16/2009, -4/+6It's true. For every two pounds of seafood you eat about one pound of something has to die.
- ringo380, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2I'm sorry my knowledge of wrestling news is still at least 8 years behind.
That and the image of wrestlers conducting a fish-study is amusing to me. - CedEx, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Four years old... about the same level of maturity here on digg.
- LilJimmyNordin, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Protip: THESE are GOOD "WWF" blended reference jokes. Just saying "SmackDown", "cage match" or "Gee, I didn't know the WWF blah blah blah" won't cut it. It's been nine years since the change, so we've pretty much covered all the basic WWF/WWE jokes.
- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Fishing fleets fritter away 45-50% of fish from once fevervent fairways
- unixfg, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1Define "Giant"...
Nom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quwebVjAEJA#t=42&am ... - ozziedog, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1For a start allot the fishermen tonnage allowances based literally on net weight. Whatever is pulled aboard is weighed then. If a fisherman had a quota of 20 tonnes of fish type x, but only 12 tonnes he could sell because the off catch counts as quota weight, he would do his level best to get as little of off catch as possible.
- jftitan, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1frogfish.... now that isn't a cute fish. Looks cool when it blends in, but not cute.
- grungemusic3001, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1you forgot owls! how could you?
- paterade724, on 04/16/2009, -1/+2met a giant fish...
- jtt123, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1what are fishers going to do with dead fish just let them keep the ones that they would throw over, its not like the really throw back alive undersized species they wanted to catch in the first place
- levitron, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1Ah- very good. Thank you.
- BossKey, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Old acronym is old

- swerwerwer, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1You are ignorant.
- Sarthax, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Baleen whales are called “filter feeders.” They eat small schooling baitfish, herring and pollack, and they also eat very tiny organisms like plankton and krill.
Toothed whales are hunters. They find, chase and then capture prey (fish, squid, crabs, starfish, and other ocean creatures) with their teeth. Once captured, the prey is swallowed whole.
Impressive but to be fair they don't eat whole schools at once though they sure do try.
I do stand corrected though on the fact they don't eat fish. Their diets consist primarily of krill and plankton though.
"Baleen whales feed mostly on plankton, which contains a variety of tiny crustaceans, such as krill and copepods. They normally feed by swimming with their mouths open or by racing forward and gulping in water and fish. A surprising fact: although these whales grow to a large size, their throat is only a few inches in diameter. " - jerbaker, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1"I find it amazing what people will believe just 'cause some troll tells them so."
Some troll on Digg perchance? - skintigh, on 04/16/2009, -2/+2Worst silver lining, ever.
Hey, if we drive this species - that is used to feed humans - to extinction at least they are biodegradable! - jerbaker, on 04/16/2009, -1/+1That's like saying serial killers aren't the problem, it's the idiots that are making serial killing illegal.
- funkwoo10, on 04/16/2009, -4/+4its not always the fishermen its the idiots that make up the quoter rules..I.e the stupid EU.
- BoneStamp, on 04/16/2009, -1/+1Like I said, "it would be better to avoid this." I agree that this is a problem, but exaggeration from you and the article doesn't help the cause... it just makes the message sound like an argument and people like to take sides in an argument.
- levitron, on 04/16/2009, -2/+2More alliteration!
Fishing fleets fritter away 45-50% of fish f........., um.... [help?] - inactive, on 04/16/2009, -2/+1I wonder if the WWF ever confronts Asian countries about their fishing. My guess would be yes, but I think preying on weaker minded countries like the U.S. is a lot better for them. That is because they don't stand any chance what so ever about changing behavior in any other part of the world. Japan still kills whales and the internaitonal community could not care. So I hope the WWF continues to give the U.S. hell for what it does, because really, no other country cares.
- FLUX, on 04/16/2009, -4/+2This is an out right lie
the wwf is just like Peta make up facts that side with your case and New scientist is just becoming a shill for these fringe group
http://www.fao.org/docrep/003/T4890E/T4890E00.htm
The authors provide a provisional estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27.0 million mt
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_industry
the estimated total catch for 2005 93,253,346mt
27 divided by 93 is no where near 1/2 - mysticpickle, on 04/16/2009, -4/+2I'm sorry I can't take anything the World Wildlife Foundation says seriously anymore. Everytime I see WWF all I think about is Bret Hart giving someone the Sharpshooter
- shutaro, on 04/16/2009, -3/+2Well, fish aren't exactly cute, are they?
- PurpleDingo, on 04/16/2009, -5/+1...which feeds the other fish in the sea, and the circle of life continues. What's the big deal?
- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -9/+5I come from a long line of commercial fisherman. while they do occasionally catch the odd fish once in a while, it's nowhere near the level that the idiot who wrote the article claims.
Half a load of crap fish is half pay, they WILL NOT waste their time doing such things.
Pure BS going on there.
If half of my cousins fish were unusable, he would not even come close to making a good living... He makes more cash than all my other cousins, by far.
I find it amazing what people will believe just 'cause some troll tells them so. - compgeek, on 04/16/2009, -6/+1Fishing quotas are obviously low in the EU they are throwing back 1/2 dead fish in some cases that aren't going to do anything in the ecosystem.
- shutaro, on 04/16/2009, -7/+2The WWF needs to spend more time putting the smack down and less time worrying about fish.
