- Intertron, on 11/06/2009, -0/+25Awesome! I wish they would've given Americans the money to start doing this instead of bailing out douchebag automakers and bankers.
- Eddie Temple, on 11/06/2009, -1/+24Actually in countries like Germany and Denmark, citizens who produce over a certain amt of green energy to power their home can sell any excess energy back to the power grid. So it is possible for a family to invest 50,000 on a turbine and eventually earn a profit. It just may take 2 or 3 decades.
- NBCLocal, on 11/06/2009, -0/+18This is the kind of thing that takes a lot more initiative than I'll ever have. Props to them for making such a large commitment to reducing their carbon footprint.
- thezoner, on 11/06/2009, -0/+18awesome-- charging a electric car by Turbines
- BossKey, on 11/06/2009, -1/+17If they can afford it, I want them to buy it. It's only thanks to rich early adopters that expensive gadgets reach a sales volume where they get cheap enough to produce for you and me to afford.
- Intertron, on 11/06/2009, -0/+12Start your own smaller versions! If you don't want to DIY, I was surprised how cheap some of these are at-

$1,249 for 2kw? Sounds good. - tonks01, on 11/06/2009, -0/+11Anyone know who manufactures that turbine, or one of that scale? The ones I look at look like they should be on a caravan. Even with a high cost initially it must be nice not to get a bill through the post every month, except the occasional cheque paying you for the excess electricity you produced! aw sweeeeet.
- PowderedToasty, on 11/06/2009, -1/+11newsflash. That's not the point.
- AndrewMoyer, on 11/06/2009, -0/+9"Props!" As in propellers...
- lindenwold, on 11/06/2009, -0/+9i know a family in south jersey that has one of these at their home by the bay.
it provides them more than enough electricity for their house, and they sell the excess back to the power company.
the ROI can take a while, but if you have the money, why not? - frequentFlyer, on 11/06/2009, -1/+8If you watch the video, you'll see a large wind turbine. Quoting from this source: http://gogreen.whatitcosts.com/wind-turbine-pg4.ht ...
"A 10 Kilowatt System - $80,000 to $125,000
Cost For A Residential Wind Turbine
This is a very substantial wind turbine system requiring a 90- to 120-foot tower, large-size turbine, special zoning and town permits to erect the structure, and hefty shipping and installation costs. Once up and running, this system will produce enough energy to completely satisfy the needs of a very large house, or possibly a business or large school. This price includes professional installation, before rebates and incentives."
It was that orifice. - Pyrallis, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Manufacturer is Gaia-Wind http://www.gaia-wind.com/
The turbine in the video is their sole product. Price is not listed on their website, but from my searching around the net, price for the turbine seems to be in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. Operational lifetime of the wind turbine is about 20 years, according to the Gaia-Wind FAQ. Also according to their website, their turbine's average annual electricity production ranges from 19,000 kWh in regions with an average annual wind speed of 4.5 m/s, to 40,000 kWh in regions with an average annual wind speed of 6.5 m/s. - FutureGuy, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Right, why would I ever spend my precious money for something like this, clean air is overrated. I would rather burn coal and let my children deal with the consequences.
/s - williegorilla, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6They have already! You can get 30% of cost of the system from tax rebates, which applies to solar, geothermal, and biomass as well. http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=tax_credits. ...
- ELWOOD_BLUES, on 11/06/2009, -2/+8What orifice did you pull that $100,000 number from? Complete turbine systems are not that much money. Costly? Yes. That much for that size? No.
- frequentFlyer, on 11/06/2009, -6/+11So, they spend $100,000 to get their turbine up to save $300/month on their electricity bills. Their ROI is a mere 27 years. I'm in!
- mcbarron, on 11/06/2009, -1/+6That's odd. A simple google search indicates that a 10 kw wind turbine costs (at most) 30k:
http://www.google.com/products?q=10+kw+home+wind+t ...
That's the price of a new car, which the majority of middle income individuals seem to be able to afford. Oh, except unlike a new car this turbine MAKES you money instead of costing you money. - cplusplus, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Europe's looking pretty good these days.
- akamad, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3This one: http://www.ecodirect.com/ProductDetails.asp?Produc ...
comes in at $30k. Don't know what the installation costs are like. But at that price the ROI becomes more reasonable. - shadowspawn, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4He's rich. I looked into it. Those windmills are expensive as anything, major $$$.
The only thing I do is use an abandoned well that wasn't capped. I fire it up to cool the house using solar; the water is pumped using PE panels and a few golf cart batteries and goes right back down, I use a couple of truck radiators and fans I found at a junkyard to blow the cool air from the well water around the place. I got the solar panels for free and I was lucky to have a place with the well. My next project is to do solar heating making a box with plexiglass and more radiators inside of it to heat water, a burned out electric water tank for heat storage, use the same "central" radiator contraption. (My friend owns a junkyard). I guess I could use an instant-on propane water heater for when there's no sun. Better than lighting fires in the wood stove.
It's a cabin, on a slab, not my home, but I work here. - PowderedToasty, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4Did the government force you to make that silly comment or did you do that all on your own?
- ramilehti, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3You have to take into account that this is in Denmark, where cost structure is very different.
Price of electricity is higher. Wind is abundant. Getting permits to build a wind turbine is cheap and easy.
When they sell electricity to the power grid they get a fixed price for it.
It really depends on where you are in the world.
Denmark and Germany are the most friendly nations on the planet when it comes to windpower.
I wish others would follow suit. - AlyxVance, on 11/06/2009, -4/+6newsflash. None of these wind turbines are cheaper than the energy you can buy otherwise.
- spunalot, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3Now if they would stop wearing wooden shoes and save our forests.
- smemily, on 11/06/2009, -3/+5God, you can't read anything without injecting "forced by the government" paranoia in it, can you?
Helpful hint: If it were forced by the government (ie, all Danish families have to do it) then it wouldn't be NEWS, would it? - akarsvp222, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1All of the related videos at the end were of wind turbine disasters.
- BluesFan, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Charging this overnight in a few years...
Tesla model S
http://autoanything.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/te ... - Dustmuffins, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Theirs was only 4 Kilowatt however.
Still probably a ***** of money. - ELWOOD_BLUES, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Ahh, you were confused by the article. The family has a single wind turbine. The video may have confused your orifice by showing the father with other turbines in the background. ;)
- frostbyt, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I would use wind to produce my electricity, but I don't want to turn into a douche bag.
btw PEOPLE make carbon dioxide too. - vivranaa, on 11/14/2009, -0/+0Wind and Solar energy will be a dominant source of energy in the near future. If you are interested , follow my blog at
http://blog.valopia.com - Delphium226, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1$100,000? If you're giong to make up numbers do it properly! $100,000,000,000,000.00!
- Cantholditdown, on 11/06/2009, -4/+2If they could do a cooperative with multiple farms it may start looking like a more attractive venture. But I am not sure how much power one of these creates. It would be great to market these to end of the world types though :)
- elizabethnunes, on 11/06/2009, -2/+0Europe's looking pretty good these days
www.evolsteelconexoes.com.br/index.html - Doubledown, on 11/06/2009, -9/+4I fully support this as long as it was a personal choice and one not forced by the government
- mogebier, on 11/06/2009, -15/+5I guarantee that cost them about $50,000 for that turbine. More money than they will ever save by making electricity themselves. But if you have the money to piss away, go for it. Just don't be a smug douche about it like ed begley is.
