- hollywoodphony, on 06/29/2008, -1/+10I wish we could just take the People Mover, like they used to have at Disneyland.
- jefuchs, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8I like the air car. If only they'd put it on the market!!!
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2008/0505/058.html - bosssmiley, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7It's alright for the New Zealanders with their ingenious home-built sheep-pulled chariots; but what about those of us who live in less ovine-rich countries?
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7This green insanity seems to me to be best described by the inverse of the Walmart motto:
"Spend more, live worse."
A vision of a diminished future. - gl77, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5eastlondoner? go see a ***** dentist you wrecked-grill *****. not only will you be able to eat sweet things, you might actually be able to get a date once in a while.
- jefuchs, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Not sure which hype you're talking about, but tens of thousands of people are being killed because we interfere with oil-producing countries.
Green considerations aside, if we stop importing oil, the Middle East will lose its power and influence, and those sheiks will have to go out and get a job. - RudeTurnip, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4If I bicycle to work, it's a 10-mile trip and I am going to be very sweaty and smelly once I get to work. If we had showers here, that wouldn't be a problem...but we don't. Something like a scooter or a SMART car is my best bet for a fuel-efficient ride.
- GiJoeBob, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I love getting to work all sweaty and dripping. The boss loves it.
- ohcoaster, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4I'd just like to say that in canada, there is no ***** green way. There is only gas. Now our gov wants to put a additional ***** 'carbon tax' on it which pisses me off because they aren't providing any alternatives, like 100% electric or hydrogen vehicles. Well it's obvious why they aren't. Money. They make a killing on gas tax in canada, and to have people generating their own hydrogen or electricity would cost them billions. It's pretty clear in canada money trumps the environment.
/rant - borez, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3OK different tangent, but I hear your point.
- beesaretasty, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Weaving through the traffic in DC on my bike was pretty exciting.
- dazparkour, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Walking. You accually get to see your surroundings.
People are so busy trying to get from A-Z that they forget there are 24 letters in between.
Side note: I noticed the privacy policy was updated recently. I noticed something:
It says cookies are "Alphanumeric" and I checked mine (enter: "javascript: alert(document.cookie)" into the address bar) and you'll see plenty non-alphanumeric data there. Which really, I don't care about but it is a strange lie.
Also, it says cookie data is not combined with screen names, but my cookie clearly has my screen name in it anyway. - serif69, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3They took it all the way to Florida.
- apeweek, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I bought a used electric car for just $2000 from eBay - it's 27 years old, but still surprisingly useful. Electricity costs me about a penny per mile.
Used electric cars: http://www.austinev.org/evtradinpost/

More links here: http://www.squidoo.com/cheap-electric-car - chrysrobyn, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Holy cow, their cheapest method is an electric skateboard? I've seen them, and they're pretty sweet, but are they really practical for most people? Take a look:
http://www.alteredelectricskateboards.com/boards.h ...
On the other hand, as soon as the commuter train starts up service here in Austin (this autumn), I'm going to pick up an electric Razor for about $250. That'll get me from home to the train stop in about 10 minutes and from the train stop to work in 5. Razor isn't going nuts putting in technology that doesn't belong, isn't unsustainably supported by tax credits, and has been in business for quite a while.
http://www.razor.com/products/e300-electric-scoote ... - topangea, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Same...I take a shower before leaving on the bike and I'm fine when I get into work. Sweat alone isn't smelly. Sweat + dirt + bacteria = smelly. Since most diggers don't shower it's easy to see why one would equate sweaty to smelly.
- Thrilltone, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2That writer is confused. It doesn't cost $3000 to convert a diesel to run biodiesel. He might be thinking of running waste vegetable oil, which would require a preheater for Britain's climate. The biodiesel process removes the gummy glycerine from the oil, so no preheater is necessary. All that you need is some extra small inline fuel filters, because biodiesel will clean the gunk out of your tank and lines. You might also want to upgrade to Viton fuel lines, because the rubber ones might degrade in a year or two.
I like the idea of the electric skateboard, because you could take it into stores with you, although you couldn't carry many groceries.
I'm afraid to leave my recumbent bike parked anywhere:
http://nonsai.com/pics/bikeandbabe.jpg - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3I bike to work, and I am plenty fat.
When its hot it sucks.
When its cold it sucks.
When its raining it sucks.
When its snowing it really ***** sucks.
I do it to avoid having to pay to park, and more importantly the pain in the ass of doing so. If you live close to work, who gives a ***** what gas costs? Its a 2 minute drive, a ***** sucking prius isnt going to save me much money over my Trans Am. - dazparkour, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2I was so glad you didn't say "YOU SOUND LIKE YOUR FROM LONDON!!!", but really - hardly anyone here in London walks or rides a bike, that is why the traffic is so bad and the M25 is a rolling carpark.
- scottykempf, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Just wait until gas is $50 a gallon at some point in the future. Then we can all ride our bikes on the roads and the freeways. Wohoo!
- WallyAnti, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2That's a pretty dumb thing to say in this day and age.
- allanmacaulay, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3exciting and green way to get around...on the hulks back!!!
- cazalive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2These scooters are every where. They are so much fun, we should see the youth driving them, might be good to do a couple of years without power, once they get their licence. Here i OZ the weather is perfect for a scooter. I love to walk but in some countries you get your lungs full of pollution while taking a walk.
Caz - noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Yeah I'm sure that's how it will happen when the Middle East collapses.
- topangea, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3If you don't take a shower you'll be smelly. If you have clean clothes and you take a shower you'll only be sweaty, not smelly. If you wear the appropriate clothing (water wicking) you'll have minimal sweat that will dry rather quickly. You'll likley be sweat from your helmet, but 5 mins in the bathroom and you're ready to go. I do it every day, 10 miles each way.
- noahhoward, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Sounds like a promotional opportunity.
- WallyAnti, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Move closer to work and ride your damn bike (if you physically able... and no you don't get a pass for being fat.) But seriously I think there's a relationship to the fact that I am skinny and I can only eat if I bike to the grocery store... and I can only carry about a weeks worth of food in my backpack. It kinda forces you to economize. A half gallon of ice cream looks less appealing when you realize you have to hault it home on your back.
- Flummoxer, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Tomorrowland Transit Authority now.
- mk3k, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2@ Knight
Dude I have an office, no freaken cramped cubicals where I have to smell my coworkers. Seriously I don't smell in the morning after the bike ride, I think people who are out of shape smell more after exercise.
Ow f*ck it I'm going to get buried anyway but try it and then get back to me. I actually bike to work so I can talk about it, you don't. - fulibs, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3WTF, exciting?? I don't know what kind of lame life you must be living to find an electric scooter or skateboard exciting, and electric cars are only exciting if you spend big $$.
- bosssmiley, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Pie-in-the-sky greeny madness! Seven League Boots are the only way to travel.
Seven League Boots are also a patriotic choice in that their manufacture (from all-organic magic cowhide) supports bootmakers in one's home country, not greedy Magic Leaf producers abroad.
Break the Magic Leaf cartel! - topangea, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2How dare you suggest something that would involve exercise!
- Trollhammaren, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Sheep-pulled chariots, haha. Wouldn't work in Auckland, all the yuppie business suits would need three or four lattés to get over the trauma of stepping in sheep ***** before riding their segways back to their desk jobs.
- Sunflare670, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Dugg for "motor car"
- pappyblueribs, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1
Here's a map for you. Pin-point your house and figure out how to make it to work.
http://www.mag.maricopa.gov/detail.cms?item=8884 - scottykempf, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Sweaty would depend on a lot of factors. Temperature, humidity, is there rain, how fast/hard are you riding? etc. etc.
- dpcamp, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1you better take a number for the SMART car.. theres like a year waiting list for those damn things last time i heard
- orangekid13, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1It sounds to me like you're making assumptions without even making the trip on a weekend at the same time of day to see what it's like, and not factoring in getting into shape biking the same trip repetitively. If you bike for a month, you'll be able to do it faster without exerting yourself as much at the end of the month.
- bcm79, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1It would be helpful if US states allowed these on permits, not just licenses. Give 16-18 year olds (in many states) the opportunity to be mobile without the power and danger of a full-sized car.
- DouchHalco, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Isnt it wierd how the number 11 reminds you of Doogie Howser
? - orangekid13, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1How about taking the bus, light rail, commuter train, subway or whatever form of mass transit in your city is already running every day? It's hard to be greener than riding a hybrid bus that's already making the trip...
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Lets hope Canadians hold their officials and their post-petroleum world fantasies to account on election day. You are right. There is no such thing as an electric car at -30.
- orangekid13, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1excuses, excuses. combine biking with mass transit. Ride to the bus stop, put your bike on the rack on the front of the bus and ride to work from the closest stop.
or when it's decent weather out, bike the whole way, here's a site that'll help you out
http://www.bikely.com/listpaths/srchkey/phoenix - PuterPrsn, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Now find me something that's safe on a freeway commute at 65 mph + with semi's as every 4th vehicle! That's my commute, and I'd go "greener" and especially cheaper except I like the protection of metal around me. Our freeways here aren't so clogged that they run at 45 mph or less. We've had smaller cycles sucked under semi's doing 70+. No thanks!
Mass transit? Doesn't go where I work. Car pool? No one lives close that works with me. I've tried it all. -
