- ncc74656m, on 08/27/2008, -9/+23I don't understand how it is that people can just decry these people as obstructionist treehuggers (it's ok Republicans, I know that first word was kinda big there) when they were hired by the government to enforce laws created by the government! They were then fired for enforcing said laws. It's natural that the Republicans would come out to bury this story, because it was their boys who did the firing so they could skirt the law and replace the enforcers with willing yes-men.
Who else reads about Cheney's enforcers and thinks of this: http://www.imperialchicks.com/profiles/images/ig_f ... - Tornado54, on 08/27/2008, -5/+16I could never understand what Republicans have against clean water and fresh air.
- SteveSgt, on 08/27/2008, -1/+9When the last living thing
has died on account of us,
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor
of the Grand Canyon,
“It is done.”
People did not like it here.
--Kurt Vonnegut - bhicks11, on 08/27/2008, -5/+12Sad to hear but not surprising.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -4/+11As opposed to swingers who were environmental. I always get those confused.
- bonshepherd, on 08/27/2008, -2/+8Judging by most of the comments here diggers obviously have no idea how screwed the world is.
- RetlawST, on 08/27/2008, -5/+11Protecting the environment is in our best interest. Why shouldn't companies be held responsible for cleaning up their own ***** messes? If the government didn't intervene, you know damned well companies wouldn't give two ***** about your health as long as you bought their product.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7Bushco did this with ALL government agencies upon coming to power. Usually the top person is an appointed figurehead who is supposed to act as a liaison between the administration and a given agency. The rest of the #2 and down employees are civil servants with decades of experience. But Bushco canned the top three (at a minimum) in EVERY agency, and the rest were forced to capitulate to the politicized agenda or were forced out.
So, when Katrina happened for example, good ole Brownie didn't have ANYONE under him who knew what they were doing.
So, when we get poisoned by tomatoes, jalapenos, etc. the FDA has NO IDEA what is going on.
So, when the EPA needs to clean the air, water, or even just uphold its own laws and charter, it has no one to do so.
So, when the Justice Department needs to police itself and all branches of government, it can't.
And when our intelligence agencies need to find Bin Laden and other criminals, they don't have a clue.
Etc. etc.
This is the main reason why every branch of the US government has been in a holding pattern for 7 1/2 years, having accomplished NOTHING whatsoever for the good of the nation or its citizenry. It is well documented and true and, of course, not sexy enough to have been given the coverage it was due by the MSM. Sigh. - Brutusfly, on 08/27/2008, -9/+15So the U.S. should be all about short term business interest? They make a Million trashing something and tax-payers loose a Billion trying to clean up the centuries of disastrous consequences? No thanks. Oil industry says screw the tourist industry. Sugar industry says screw the fishing industry. Stupid neo-con primate says screw everyone and bring me the proceeds!
- Smurph0404, on 08/27/2008, -3/+8I want one thousand tough guys, and I want one thousand soft guys to make the tough guys look tougher.
- nick111, on 08/27/2008, -0/+52 reasons
1) clean water and fresh air means that their funders (ie: corporations) would have to start acting responsiby
2) clean water and fresh air have always been liberal concerns... and they hate anything liberal. - ChefGroovy, on 08/27/2008, -3/+8They may have been real asshats.
I mean come on, a few fish die so people can have water in the desert. Thats part of reality.
humans are the top of the food chain don't forget. However they should have grilled the salmon before let them rot like that. - swicklund, on 08/27/2008, -4/+9WTF? Since when does Sierra club hurt America. Or is this just one of those right wing "opinion" pieces?

- jonshipman, on 08/27/2008, -1/+5Republicans don't hate fresh water, they sell it to you for $2.00 a bottle.
They're still working on charging you for the fresh air though... maybe a couple more years... - bonshepherd, on 08/27/2008, -1/+5I'm older and work for a living and know your wrong.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -4/+8Republicans hate the Earth

- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3And I forgot to mention that this is why the SEC etc. wasn't watching all those secret back door banking deals that led to the current collapse of housing mortgages, etc. etc.
It all comes back to the decapitation of all government agencies by Bushco to serve the White House political agenda.
LilRabbitFooFoo is speaking truth to power...until I get bonked on the head. 8P - phdude, on 08/27/2008, -8/+11The Bush administration sure ***** things up...
- brdsofprey, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I looked at some of your other comments.
Using words like "rightard" and spouting sensationalistic hatred doesn't support whatever argument you are trying to make.
In none of the comments of yours I read did you offer any information or data to support anything. Nor do you really offer a position on anything other than being angry. So, really, you're not doing anything but making yourself look like an uninformed idiot. - brdsofprey, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Wow. Someone is feeling angry.
It doesn't help your argument to talk like that. Unless you're pulling the insanity plea. - RangerGeoff, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I never thought I would be applauding someone who went by the name of LilRabbitFooFoo...
...but you really hit the nail right on the head with that comment! Nice job.
I am originally from New Orleans and used to work for the National Park Service. I am not a big fan of the Bush administration. - RainStreet, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I logged in at work to digg you up. Kurt Vonnegut is my favorite author. RIP.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -2/+5Your way of life is *****
- BOFH2, on 08/27/2008, -2/+5If you consider "I" a big word I think you have more to worry about then the republicans. :)
- oldhick, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3The first word was too tough for me.. Was that a lower case "L" or what???
I don't decry anyone, but I have yet to see evidence of hundreds of people 'forced out'. The link mentions one who resigned. In case you weren't aware, resigning means quitting. Quitting is for quitters. Stand and fight! Instead he took a lucrative private sector job ultimately proving that money rules all... ( a bit pessimistic I know ) - pault107, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Ban this troll, check his comment history:
http://zuubu.pcriot.com/?username=CoolStoryBro&sel ... - lisaawesome, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Clean water and fresh air are threats to our freedom and must be taken out.
- PinkFloydFan, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Mine too. I actually was going to reply to DeuceDiggalow to say that "Real republicans conserve resources" but the Kurt Vonnegut quote hit the nail on the head. RIP Kurt Vonnegut and Kilgore Trout.
- Herolint, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2You've obviously never worked for the government. This sort of thing is quite common. You get a job when somebody with one philosophical view is in power and you lose said job when somebody with a different philosophical point of view comes to power. That's how the game is played and both sides do it equally well.

- webyatri, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3yeah do opposite of sierra club and that traitor jimmy carter. You are not a patriot unless you drive hummers, consume GM food, eat nothing unless it has at least 5 carcinogens that can't be pronounced, should definitely have rGBH, support the destruction of natural habitat to enrich big corporates. That's what I am talkin about. U. S. A. U. S. A
- overtoke, on 08/27/2008, -7/+9They were fired for doing their job, moron.
- FlimBlimmer, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2One digg for Homer J.
- markcih, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I have truly come to hate the fact I have a degree in environmental science and have been in the profession for over 20 years, when it comes to dreck like some of the comments above.
Read the USGS report entitled "Klamath River Basin Hydrologic Conditions Prior to the September 2002 Die-Off of Salmon and Steelhead"
Abstract
More than 33,000 salmon and steelhead died in the lower Klamath River in late September 2002 on their way to spawning areas upstream. According to the California Department of Fish and Game, the cause of death was infection by protozoan and bacterial pathogens. Two factors that may have contributed to the disease incidence are low streamflow and high water temperature.
September streamflows throughout the Klamath Basin were low, among the four lowest September flows recorded on the main stem since 1960. The low streamflows were caused by below-average snowpack and long-term drought, with resulting reduced ground-water discharge to streams. - slapthemonkey, on 08/27/2008, -2/+3How can any sane person do such a thing..

- shutaro, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1...even the power of heart?
- Herolint, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I agree with you point of view as far as it suggests we are stewards over the Earth and need to take care of it and keep it clean. However, I strongly disagree with your assertion that Republicans are bad and stupid and Democrats are benevolent and smart.
Both Republicans and Democrats are retarded groups of evil hacks who are in politics for proceeds and power. The only real difference between the two is their strategies for deceiving you and squeezing those proceeds and power out of you.
One of their greatest victories, I think, was to pit common citizens against each other when in reality, we should be united against the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches and force them to once again be a government by and for the people.
We've all lost our way, unfortunately. - jonshipman, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Actually the first part was true, the online comic had Bennett head down and put a stop to it.
- shutaro, on 08/27/2008, -8/+8Captain Planet?
- shutaro, on 08/27/2008, -2/+2First you get the sugar, then you get the power, then you get the women...
- swrostmore, on 08/27/2008, -3/+3"our way of life" = crass consumerism. Take our constitutional liberties, but God help anyone who interferes with our god-given American right to limitless consumtion on bottomless junk-loan credit with no regard for consequences.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0I'm with swrostmore on this one. Not saying that the predatory lenders aren't scum, but there's also got to be some accountability for people who think the point of living is to purchase and consume all they can, live beyond their means and then throw up hands and cry "woe is me."
