- skintigh, on 09/23/2009, -3/+34Your bike is powered by the food you eat, which is grown thanks to nitrates and pesticides made with fossil fuel, and then harvested with fossil fuel, and transported with fossil fuel, and cooked with fossil fuel.
Why do you hate the Earth? - angryfirelord, on 09/23/2009, -2/+22I didn't realize battery life was measured in miles per gallon of gasoline.
- beelz, on 09/23/2009, -0/+20$13,995
0.o its cool but... - theberlindoctor, on 09/23/2009, -1/+19FTA: "When one of them is bought, the owner becomes part of an elite club of enthusiastic riders."
Because efficient, low emissions transportation should be reserved for the elite.
/s - depro9, on 09/23/2009, -0/+11Build your own e-bike for a third of the cost. http://www.electricrider.com/crystalyte/
- MacBookForMe, on 09/23/2009, -0/+9I badly need a sponsor for that cool mountain bike...
- kooch888, on 09/23/2009, -1/+10The most convient way to measure efficency in alternative fuel viehicles is to compare it to standard gas vehicles.
Thats why it says equivalent.
If the title gave it in MPW (watt) no one would care. - Scottamus, on 09/23/2009, -1/+9$13,995
- Colecoman1982, on 09/23/2009, -1/+7It's called math. Add in a pinch of physics and chemistry and you can figure out an equivalency. Unlike measuring things in "libraries of congresses" this relationship actually makes good sense considering the context of the article.
- Colecoman1982, on 09/23/2009, -0/+6No, hate the rich that need a tricked out, aluminum/carbon fiber, before they can jump on the electric bike bandwagon for the most shallow reason. Electric bikes have been around forever and are insanely popular in places like China. It's not an either-or situation, they don't have to be made from "super-trendy-um" before they become a good idea.
- hoffmann277, on 09/23/2009, -0/+6I love it. Problem I see though is, I currently see people get pissed when their cheapie $50 to $100 or whatever bike gets stolen. How are they going to feel if this ends up that way?
- shanealeslie, on 09/23/2009, -0/+6I ride 15 Km uphill to work every day on my ebike. Bought it for $800 Canadian. If you get an eBIKE (a stock bike frame with a brushless motor in the rear hub, battery back on the rack, and standard geared cranks and pedals) and not a eSCOOTER (with their godawful useless pedals sticking out of either side of a .75 m footrest that requires you to be bowlegged to use) you can get them pretty inexpensively. Not having to drive or take transit for 8-9 months of the past two years has saved me enough money that I can afford to buy a new one this year if I want, and still come out ahead on transit expenses. I decided to buy a MIG welder instead, now Imma gonna chop that mother into a semi-recumbent low rider and throw an 18 inch chain ring on the crank - instant torque from the motor to get started+monster chainring=ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM).
- ziplizard, on 09/23/2009, -0/+5so when does a electric mountain bike becomes a electric motorcycle?
- theNazz, on 09/23/2009, -0/+5If you don't mind ordering directly from China, you can do much better on costs:
http://www.goldenmotor.com/ - askantik, on 09/23/2009, -0/+5Seeing as how in the first paragraph of the article it tells you that one of the six models is called the "Commuter USV," I don't think it's meant for trail riding. The mountain bike probably provides more stability and bulk (front a rear shocks and disc brakes, plus it needs a large housing for electrical components).
- JEWestbrookJR, on 09/23/2009, -0/+5yes, but a normal mountain bike is much cheaper and gets infinity mpg
- ChikenShit, on 09/24/2009, -0/+4or for a miserly $2000, you could buy top of the line 150cc scooter that gets above 100 mpg and a sustained top speed of 80 to 90 mph. or you could get this ***** electric bike.
- pettdog78, on 09/23/2009, -0/+4Definitely sounds great however the 14k price tag does seem extreme. For that much I'd rather spend 5k on parts and attempt to make my own.
- JellyBean473, on 09/23/2009, -0/+4It might be just me, but when I go out for a ride on my mountain bike a large part of what makes it so fun and rewarding is the fact that I'm propelling myself and all I have to rely on is a couple simple mechanical systems and my own legs. I can see electric bikes for commuting, but for mountain biking?
Also what is with the carbon wheels? Good luck doing any serious trails on a 58 lb bike and having them hold up. - Cyberdropping, on 09/23/2009, -0/+4You can make your own ebike for a hell of a lot less. Maybe 1 - 2 grand. Sadly, you can not justify the cost. $13,000 that's insane! But, I have one and I love it! I ride it to work every nice day and this is about 15 miles round trip. If you think about how much gas you can buy for 2 grand though, I think I could go to work for 7 years on it.
An ebike can only be justified (like all electric vehicles that I have priced ) in your own mind - not financially. Gas has 150 times the energy per pound than even the best batteries. :( - shanealeslie, on 09/23/2009, -0/+4In Canada once you take off the pedals, or the vehicle can accelerate above 32Km/h on motor alone it becomes a motor vehicle, and requires license and insurance; until then it is considered an 'electric assist bicycle'. It's probably similar in the US <sarcasm>but with archaic units of measurement</sarcasm>.
- pmaxwell, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3Yes! I've always wondered what happens when you cross the finest mountain bike components money can buy, an 850w brushless DC motor and a 20ah lithium-ion battery with motocross styling and sensibilities!
- unlimitedmp, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3Currently thinking about picking up a pos target/walmart bike and drooled at the sight of this
- bdbr, on 09/24/2009, -1/+4Or maybe because $6,000+ bicycles are reserved for the "elite".
- TAGline, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3Hell the one being reviewed was $14,000.
Though I suppose it would be a pretty decent car replacement if you lived in an area where it never rains, never gets cold, and you never have to go on the highway. - MacBookForMe, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3no worries, I've got two as far as I know, fella...
- congnelius, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3That thing looks like a flying V guitar with handlebars and wheels attached to it.
- shanealeslie, on 09/23/2009, -0/+3<cough>bikegeek</cough>
I agree though. - buzaman, on 09/23/2009, -1/+3 100 bucks gets you a new mountain bike, 13k is ridiculous.
- Mnementh2230, on 09/25/2009, -0/+2What I want to see is a reasonably priced (ie $8-9 grand) electric motorcycle capable of highway speeds and with a range of 70+miles. If I could get that, I'd use it for my daily commute 3/4 of the year - sorry, not a fan of freezing my balls/ears/extremities off.
- HavocXphere, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2Agreed. MPW is useless. Kilometers per watt would be better.
- Litespeed, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2"finest mountain bike components"? Don't look any more fancy than what you'd get on a mid-level Giant - do they think Fox forks and Avid brakes are the pinnacle of mountain bike technology? The frame is a copy of the Trek Y bikes from the 90's even down to the unified rear triangle.
And besides, what's wrong with just buying a normal bike and pedaling it? Isn't that the whole point of cycle commuting - to get to work and get some exercise at the same time? - jtmedina, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2They´ll have to lower the price if they want to sell it.
Electric bicycles are a great idea. I would like to see one for $300 and 30 miles range.
Electric bicycles could relief the pollution in the cities.
A good example of massive use of bicycles for transportation is The Netherlands.
- Barackalypse, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2The $13,995 price tag of this bike will buy over 4600 gallons of $3 per gallon gas, enough to put 140,000 miles on a Honda Civic.
- buddamus, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2I want one but i would be to scared to take it anywhere encase it got nicked, its to pricey to replace
- planetidiot, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2Cool tech but something that stealable should not be that expensive. You basically can't stop a determined bike thief.
- HakonD, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2What's happened to the Digg comment section? And why is this getting dug up? Seriously...
- stuman77, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Hey...my vehicle gets 14 rods to the hogshead and I like it that way!
- FiberShift, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1That's almost two Kia Rio's!
- bdbr, on 09/24/2009, -2/+3100 bucks gets you a piece of junk that LOOKS like a mountain bike.
- skintigh, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Why do you have no sense of humor, nor the ability to realize that I was correct?
- bdbr, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Well, the first thing that happens is you part with a lot of money.
- buzaman, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1@shanealeslie
Any links for DIY tutorials? - Litespeed, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2We call that a "mountain style" bike.
- freakFlag, on 09/24/2009, -3/+4@skintigh
Why do you have ***** for brains? - Nickolassc, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1It's a cool bike, but it doesn't make any sense to me that the frame would be aluminum and not carbon fiber at that pricepoint and the tires are Maxxis and not Schwalbe like indicated in the article.
- hereticoftruth, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1When all these electric bicycles, motor cycles and cars get financially "efficient" then we will be switching over to electrics big time. A $14000 bicycle is nowhere near practical for the average man. Get it down to $1400 and you will see sales take off like a rocket.
- clippclop, on 09/23/2009, -0/+1probably classified in the same way scooters are. It varies from place to place.
- HavocXphere, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Working out "equivalents" using chemistry is a disaster. It's way too different from reality. e.g. Drop the temps a bit. That will have a huge effect on the battery but not on fuel. Equivalents are useful as a broad guideline at best, but its only a matter of time before the manufacturers start gaming the numbers. e.g. Max out the battery, put in one gallon of fuel and then claim that it gets 200miles/gallon.
