- Fingertips, on 04/14/2008, -8/+4very cool how it has adapted to trap the beetle in there. It reminds me of this lapse time video of the Fire Lily of Borneo which traps unsuspecting bees inside of it.

- McSwankypants, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3What sucks though are the damned porn videos on the right side of Dailymotion's site.. Sucks when you want to pass this on to your mother...or if you're at work.

- Tripw0l, on 04/14/2008, -1/+17Stunning, I love the complexity of nature and it's even more awe inspiring when it's captured properly on film.
- Hakonan, on 04/14/2008, -14/+5Fake, the video was obviously sped up.

- FeargusMcDuff, on 04/14/2008, -7/+2Please save that overused joke for when it is actually appropriate, so that perhaps that line may one day be funny again.

- Melenor, on 04/14/2008, -0/+22I particularly enjoyed that beetle's great escape at the end. I was worried there for a bit.
- eviljolly, on 04/14/2008, -0/+9Yeah, I totally thought that flower was gonna Om Nom Nom the beatle for a minute there.
- metallikop, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I'm truly a nerd since I thought the "prison" shared an uncanny resemblance to a sarlacc pit.
- WhiteMike87, on 04/14/2008, -2/+5those lilies are smarter then most of the kids I went to high school with.

- pat00783, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3love Attenborough - does anyone know where this footage is from? is it a new doc on the BBC?
- miko555, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2it's from the BBC Planet Earth Series. I suggest picking up in hi def. It's the most gorgeous series I've seen. Definitely worth every penny.
- pat00783, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1lol, thanks. I actually have the BBC's Planet Earth series but I guess I forgot this particular sequence... there's just so much goodness. Guess I'll be pulling out the "Jungles" episode tonight.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=igkjcuw_n_U- rayefrenzy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Do yourself a favour and google Tor. Its amazing for getting around those pesky work filters.
- hacman, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1they already thought of that. :)

- renagadex2, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Nature is *****' clever.
- SilverhammerMBA, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2David Attenborough is my hero. Incredible video.
- jondo85, on 04/14/2008, -0/+12I wonder if Attenborough would consider allowing the BBC to synthesise his voice to use for narrations after he is gone? Having to watch nature docs with someone else narrating would suck.
- ronk, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10How does the lighting stay constant throughout the entire video? Thanks.
- schizogony, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6You're welcome.
- Shivatron, on 04/14/2008, -0/+8They vary the exposure over the course of the footage. Video is like still photography -- you can control the exposure (amount of light in the frame) by varying the lens aperture or shutter speed (called shutter angle in video). Since this video is time-lapse, there is plenty of time between frames and it is trivial to add as much exposure time as required to make up for lack of daylight. (Obviously, in a more traditional continuous-video system where you are looking for 30 frames per second, you are limited to a maximum exposure time of 1/30th of a second without employing additional tricks.)
- thesonofdarwin, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1They likely didn't even need to do any tricks. The growth isn't so fast that taking one shot at dusk and then starting again in the morning would be a huge change. Most growth will occur during daylight hours. Then they simply increased the frame rate to catch the flowers opening and closing as that happens much, much faster than the plant growth, but still occurs during daylight.
- cerejota, on 04/14/2008, -8/+4Evolution is awesome!!!
- SLockhart, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1God is awesome. Evolution is merely one of his tools.
- SLockhart, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1What? Nobodies gonna tell me I'm one of His tools?
- SLockhart, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1God is awesome. Evolution is merely one of his tools.
- ecarver530, on 04/14/2008, -3/+2how does darwin account for that?
- antler, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Are you serious?
Sunlight = scarce resource, thus an arms race in which larger leaves capture more sunlight and survive to reproduce more, at the same time blocking smaller plants from getting the sunlight they need. this is the very definition of natural selection.
I'll let you pick up a book and discover the rest for yourself -- the world is an amazing place, and gaining understanding of it is an extremely rewarding process.- thesonofdarwin, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4It's a sad world we live in that you even needed to explain this. Asking how such an extreme, highly specialized species is explained by Darwin (natural selection) shows a complete lack of even basic understanding of his work and biology in general.
- cerejota, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Shut up you elitist!
[/sarcasm]

- fflis, on 04/14/2008, -1/+10I wanna watch the water lillies, but theres a f***ing fat cottage cheese covered woman on the right in her fricken undies. WTF? BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!!!
- schmitey, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3I seriously envy you Brits for having the BBC! I know you have to pay for it and all through taxes, but the content is extraordinary!
- disasterpiece, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Is it me or was the part where the flower opened to let the beetles out quite disturbing?
- gavinhudson, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1So cool. I always wanted to see these when they were fully opened in Golden Gate park at the Conservatory.
- MuffinPatrol, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Does that flower remind anyone of a sarlacc pit?
- charlesroper, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1it does. very eerie.
- Greenergrass, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1What a beautiful video, nice place to end one's life!
- recruz, on 04/14/2008, -1/+0beetle getting bukkake'd
- recruz, on 04/14/2008, -3/+2Let's examine this a little bit here ...
1. Predator matures (goes through puberty)
2. Predator lures prey into house- pretending to be a beautiful loving partner, able to provide food and shelter, but with plans to perform sexual acts upon said prey
3. Prey falls for trap, predator takes advantage of victim for 24 hours straight (god knows what goes on behind closed doors)
4. Predator releases prisoner after having its way with it (could potentially be a minor- predator has no preference)
5. Victim comes out filthy and scarred for life- now unhappy with his/her life, falls into a perpetual cycle of sex, drugs and alcohol, unable to be saved from new-found addictions
6. Predator reproduces and teaches offspring to follow same immoral values ...
I've seen this time and time again ... it's a vicious cycle ...- staffa, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1What?
- christoastdigg, on 09/04/2008, -0/+0yea i dont know
- staffa, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1What?
- doublehue, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I bet that beetle was pisssssed off
- samuraix98, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1These lillies look similar to the lillies that kung fu artitsts float about on. Wondering if they really could support an average human or its just for films sake?
- >mark, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2I know I'm going to be dugg down, but does everyone really think that evolution can explain something so complex as this?
- SLockhart, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Only if evolution is directed by God.
- TrinitronX, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irreducible_complexit ...
This is the argument of irreducible complexity, and it's really nothing new. It's all been accounted for.
- KingGorilla, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Water lilies are bitches. Hogging all the sunlight from other plants. Having special edges so that other lilies can't barge in. And holding up beetles for a day!
- djblac, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1it's a trap beetle!!
- kinneys, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2Can you imagine how awesome the Creator is? Worship the creator, not the creatures.
- SLockhart, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1God's beautiful creation amazes me more with every day.
- daidu42, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Tha'ts ***** incredible.
