- BXRWXR, on 11/04/2008, -0/+13That makes perfect sense. No need to waste resources when nobody's going to benefit from their expenditure. Next stop, Las Vegas.
- theberlindoctor, on 11/04/2008, -2/+14It will be most beautiful when its mostly dark and you can actually see the stars again.
- nonymous666, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4Somewhat coincidentally, there's a nice article in this month's National Geographic about light pollution.
- theberlindoctor, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4I'm used to clear northern michigan skies where you can see the milky way with the naked eye.
- 2of8, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4It won't be a tourist attraction if every city does it.
Also, what the ***** is so interesting about seeing lights on buildings? I'd much rather see the stars :-) - mofw, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3good
- ninjadave, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3In Philly, you can see stars. A dozen or so.
- oninbonin, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3Yeah I'm sure you'd see more stars in somewhere like Michigan or where I used to live in Leadville Colorado, you seriously understand then why they call it "The Milkyway Galaxy" because it does look like someone spilled a huge glass of milk across the sky! When you live in a big city, you don't really get to see the stars.
- asnider, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3Compared to the amount of stars you can see in the country, where there is very little artificial light at night, what you see in the city is not very much.
I don't even live in a particularly big city and I often can't see any stars at all because of all the lights in the downtown area (where I live). It's not as bad in the more suburban parts of the city, but in the core, it's pretty hard to see stars. - tschau, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3Gotham City is Chicago.
- Noncentz, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Oh lord people will actually get to see the night sky again. I visited a buddy down there and felt discombobulated to say the least.......
Denver sky FTW - gigsgtox, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Thats what the pitch black deserts right outside Vegas are for... or just travel down to the Grand Canyon. But yes, like moths the late night shenanigans are drawn to the pretty lights, and that is the exact point. Vegas uses the lights to be pretty rather than just random office buildings leaving their lights on.
- 2of8, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2I applaud them. Say what you will about climate change and big issues, but the truth is that using energy on needless things like lights at night in unoccupied buildings wastes resources. Nobody can deny that generating electricity with coal is bad for your health, or that it costs money to build additional electrical generation, or that these resources will one day run out. The less energy used in this regard, the better off everyone is.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Like moths?
- kingnutty, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1where is it? can't see anything!
- gigsgtox, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2Except the businesses in Vegas actually benefit from their late night lighting as it is both a tourist attraction and helpful for pulling in the gamblers.
- ninjadave, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Too soon? Well, I dugg you.
- isukeyo, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2Maybe you've never been to NYC on a clear night, but you can see stars just fine. I do star gazing off my bosses roof terrace all the time and Columbia University has there own observatory. While you won't be seeing anything looking up at the sky from a street in Times Square, any roof top on a clear night can give you a sky filled with stars.
- ngresonance, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1@ gigsgtox: The problem is, Las Vegas' lights are brightening up the sky and and shining out the stars for a hundred miles in every direction. It's a noticeable glow from Death Valley, for example.
- randumbusername, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1isn't nyc comprised of democrats. the same democrats which complain about wasting energy, saving the planet, etc. i always found it ironic those complaining about american extravagance come from extravagance and excess.
bible thumpers aren't the only hypocrites. - graemee, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2Manhattan is Metropolis
- NeonDistraction, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Jesus man, are you trying to start another nerd war?
- AbleX, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1I'd love to be able to see some stars in the sky here in Vegas. It never gets completely dark, just mostly dim.
- bellisimo, on 11/04/2008, -5/+5dimmed Manhattan = Gotham City?
- pathouston22, on 11/04/2008, -3/+2"Instead of tower after tower shining at all hours — the World Trade Center stayed aglow long after its occupants went home — the skyline is becoming a patchwork of sparsely sparkling buildings decorated with ornamentally lighted tops."
The World Trade Center use to be lit up at night...now its kinda dark. - AtraNoxVII, on 11/04/2008, -4/+2I am BATMAN!
- MalarkeyPN, on 11/04/2008, -7/+3This is only going to embolden the terrorists. Now they have more shadows to lurk in. Further proof that environmentalists hate America.
