- niradg, on 11/09/2009, -0/+12it's depressing that people will cut down something that is 1,000 years old to momentarily use it as firewood.
- St8ofmi9, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8This is one of the saddest things that we hear about on a the day to day basis. It wont be long until all over the world we have nothing.
- michirican123, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7It's disgraceful, that's what it is.
- Fleagleman, on 11/09/2009, -1/+6We feel your pain, Peru. We lost a key ally in 2002.
Her last name was McBeal. - ayeroxor, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5"The giant huarango tree [...] is coveted as a source of charcoal and firewood."
I think I figured out what's happening to it... - damnshoes, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4someone should engineer trees to eat meat.
- ozziedog, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Subsidize charcoal in the region and sell it for 1/10 of what you get for turning the trees to charcoal. Destroy the charcoal economy. Then pay locals x amount per tree that is there while you point out that the reason that they are poor people living in a wasteland is because they cut the trees in the first place. If that doesn't work, make a guarded tiny tree reserve, close the roads and let them starve themselves to extinction.
- InactiveUser, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1The problem is local villages are doing the damage. There is no national economy to support radical subsidies and yes they have nothing much and are doing away with what is left. The desert will eat them.
- ayeroxor, on 11/09/2009, -1/+1You think *that's* rough, you should look into Heat Death Theory. It's ALL OUR FAULT!
