Earth’s 10 Worst Current Environmental Disasters
rapingmothernature.com — Yes indeed, we as a species have spent the past two centuries polluting our way to prosperity without a care in the world, and only now – on the brink of multiple ecological catastrophes – are we forced to appreciate our symbiotic relationship with the natural world.

- upick, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5This is a great article well sourced.
It seems very negative but by the way we live our life on earth is in the Golden Years still another few decades and we'll be eating cloned animals, vegetables that don't look like vegetables and the worse thing of all we are all living longer which means only 1 thing "OVER POPULATION" - Junkey, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3When I was a kid I was like damn that radioactive logo is cool. I wonder whats in there?
- TheImaginator, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Dugg for mentioning depleted uranium as an environmental disaster - because no matter how much money can be made out of dumping nuclear waste all over the land of foreign countries, it is still not a good thing to do - and will obviously affect people's health in the long run.
- lurcher, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Great article to help us wake up! Will be writing about it on www.thegreenrepublic.co.uk if that's ok
- Eyesaw, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2sad but true. its disgusting how people can destroy something so beautiful like the rainforest and risk making animals extinct. serious problem!
- wootup, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Also: traffic, industrial manufacturing, AIDS, war, factory farming.
- BigManOnCampus, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1This article lost me at depleted uranium.
Unless you are directly inhaling vaporized DU, or sowing crops in fields where DU rounds were used, you can't damage yourself that much from this stuff.
For instance, lead is used in bullets much much more than DU. Comparing both elements, Lead is equally as toxic to the body when ingested. Lead poisoning is a serious issue, but noone writes about the use of lead in bullets? So what's the difference? Radioactivity!
For those who do not deal with radioactivity on a daily basis, allow me to educate you. Most radiation particles are stopped by clothing. MOST. For the really bad stuff, a small later of lead impregnation in a suit will stop it. The other thing that stops it is DISTANCE. So as long as you are not ingesting radioactive particles, or inhaling them, you're generally just fine. The reason why radioactive fallout is such a concern is you have large volumes of radioactive dust being spread over a wide area, making inhalation or ingestion much easier. I understand that DU in weapons creates some dust, but it is not high in the atmosphere (not spread out) and not a large mass since DU rounds are used to penetrate, and not explode.
Now, having said that, Let me be clear and say that I'm not saying, oh, yeah, DU is perfectly safe and I would sleep with it and drink it. NO. It is a dangerous substance. But perspective needs to be applied here. DU round usage is NOT a major environmental concern. IT JUST ISN'T. - D1ckFace, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1The truth about the Global warming Debate: http://digg.com/environment/Global_Warming_or_Glob ...
