Does Traffic Congestion Relief = Climate Change Relief?

sightline.org — We've recently heard the claim that adding lanes to crowded highways could reduce overall emissions by keeping cars from idling in traffic. But in reality, each extra one-mile stretch of lane added to a congested highway will actually *increase* climate-warming CO2 emissions by more than 100,000 tons over 50 years.

  • socialpyramid, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Plus, if we could build out of congestion, we'd be able to breeze through LA. It's very hard to build out of congestion with more roads, because studies show the more roads you build, the more people will drive on them.
