- rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -9/+32I don't think you understand the concept of a pollutant. Anything can be a pollutant in high enough quantities. Hell, oxygen is a pollutant in that it can be highly toxic to living tissue, it's just that we evolved to resist its effects as a result of its accumulation in the early Earth's atmosphere. Oh wait, never mind, you're clearly ***** ***** insane, it'd be useless trying to explain science to you. You don't really give a ***** about understanding science, all that matters are your deluded conspiracy theories.
- rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -3/+21Can we please just leave climate change to the scientists? Seriously, I'd greatly appreciate it if people like Al Gore and Jim Inhofe would kindly shut the ***** up and quit trying to make the issue political. They're politicians, and their only vested interest in the subject is how it affects their political careers. They may have opposite stances when it comes to global warming, but at the end of the day, their motivations are the same, and it's a disgrace.
- wrathchilde, on 06/28/2009, -1/+19"More and more of them are bailing away from the global warming bandwagon every day."

wtf does this article have to do with temperature or climate?
Jeez, it's almost as if you're trying to make people think you're overzealously trying to shoot down anything remotely and indirectly related to global warming or something... - ricker2005, on 06/28/2009, -3/+19First, your train of thought it ridiculous. It's like asking how a vitamin can be a poison if it's a vitamin. If the concentration of a chemical is out of whack, it's not a normal situation.
Second, if you're train of thought inevitably leads you to the conclusion that something is a "massive, global hoax"...well, you're usually wrong. And that's putting it mildly. - emjaymj, on 06/28/2009, -0/+13What's pathetic is getting all indignant because somebody used a word... lol
- rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -2/+14It's not evolution. A change in phenotype does not necessarily represent a change in genotype. Over the past century, the average American has gotten taller, not because of a change in genetic makeup, but simply because people today have access to better diets than people did a century ago, and diet is contributing factor in height.
In this particular example, phenotype was influenced by CO2 concentrations - there was no altering of the fish's DNA here. - ozydingo, on 06/28/2009, -1/+12Dude, chill. This article has nothing to do with cap & trade, taxes, or other proposed initiatives that may or may not be beneficial or harmful to the environment and/or the economy.
The article simply reports on an interesting finding published on Friday in Science (a pretty damn reputable source) about the development of the otolith in white sea bass in varying CO2 concentrations.
That you dislike what some politicians are trying to do with climate science bears no relevance on the claims of the article and the journal article referenced therein. - Hollow5, on 06/28/2009, -0/+11I guess you haven't heard
- ozydingo, on 06/28/2009, -1/+11I never understood how anyone could digg that argument up. That fact is rather disheartening.
- Cayfox, on 06/28/2009, -2/+12By your logic, drowning should be impossible because water is necessary for life.
- gumballer, on 06/28/2009, -4/+13Hey, what are you laughing at? It's my big ears, isn't it, kids? Well children, I can't help that!
- wrathchilde, on 06/28/2009, -1/+9I guess you don't hear it, because you are not listening.
You need only briefly examine any GCM to understand that water vapor is indeed included as a feedback, as are emissions from natural sources (in case next you wish to invoke volcanoes). - cabdirazzaq, on 06/28/2009, -1/+9Poor Moe...
- novenator, on 06/28/2009, -2/+10what?
- rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -5/+13Of course you didn't bother actually reading the article. It's a simple scientific experiment. They exposed fish to different concentrations of carbon dioxide, and got different ears sizes depending on the concentration. There's no ***** question about the cause here. But no, go ahead and use this article to further your idiotic agenda despite the fact that this has nothing to do with politics.
- rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -8/+15Scientific articles, please? I'm genuinely interested to see if your claims are backed up by data. Oh, and do they have a model worked out to explain temperature change? Because there has to be another factor at work other than solar activity. Temperature fluctuations in recent decades don't match up to solar activity fluctuations.
Also, please shut the ***** up about the Al Gore camp. Everyone knows that Al Gore is a charlatan and a hack. I'm interested in the science of climate change, not your politically motivated *****. I don't give a ***** about government regulation, cap and trade, and all that other *****, I simply genuinely want to have a better understanding of the Earth's climate. - wrathchilde, on 06/28/2009, -0/+7Appologies, I see that some of the referenced links are changed. For example, a good link for NASA is:
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/ - rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -1/+8What the ***** makes you assume that if someone believes in climate change, they support government regulation?
- rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -2/+8I find it fascinating. On one end of the spectrum, you have a fairly innocuous story about carbon dioxide making fish ears bigger. On the other end, you have a bunch of morons shouting "ZOMG THEY MENTIONED CO2 THEY'RE A BUNCH OF ZEALOTS OUT TO CONTROL OUR LIVES!!!" I don't even understand the assumption that if anyone says anything bad about carbon dioxide, they automatically support government regulation of it. That's just ***** stupid. I think seat belts are a good idea and save lives, but I don't support seat belt laws. No one would assume I supported seat belt laws if I told someone to buckle up. But when it comes to climate change, it's assumed that if I believe in it, I also support laws to try to regulate it, which is absolutely not the case.
- ozydingo, on 06/28/2009, -0/+6Why post it where it is off-topic? There is no claim being made regarding global warming in this article.
Moreover, what difference would it make what other reputable or non-reputable sources claim even if your list were relevant to the reference journal article? Sure, you can find someone online saying something crazy, wow that's impressive. What relevance do the claims of others bear on the validity of this set of experiments published in Science? - ozydingo, on 06/28/2009, -2/+8Do you have another explanation for why the experimenters' manipulation of CO2 in their controlled seawater samples caused the observed changes?
FYI, If you have access to Science, the article itself is only 1 page long and is rather straightforward. http://www.sciencemag.org.libproxy.mit.edu/cgi/sea ... - ozydingo, on 06/28/2009, -1/+7Who said anything about the greenhouse effect?
- wrathchilde, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5Finally, an excellent and appropriate question.
Good science tends to generate more questions as discoveries are made.
Sorry, though, not my field. We could discuss the nature of carbonate chemistry in the ocean all day, but once we move into a fish's head, I'm out of my depth. - inactive, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5http://tbitw.com/

- KingGorilla, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5tl;dr
- steven0451, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5Everyone, lay witness to two ends of the spectrum. I think the phrase "everything in moderation" seems to fit both the story and these commenters.
- youhurtgorgoar, on 06/28/2009, -3/+8And so Obama's evil plan to bioengineer all life on the planet in his own image begins to unfold... is their no end to his vanity!!!???
- rocknog, on 06/28/2009, -4/+8I reserve politeness for people deserving of respect. Artwhite is an ***** and a troll who couldn't even be bothered to read the article he was responding to with such righteous indignation.
- Xwhy, on 06/28/2009, -1/+5If there's too much CO2 in the atmosphere, shouldn't we just plant more trees and crops.
Hell, the weeds seem to plant themselves, you'd think that they'd multiply like gangbusters given the overabundant CO2.
Oversimplification, yes. But then, that's all I ever hear from this argument. - Trent1492, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4I do.
- Trent1492, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3Do you think that is all that is need to grow food? How about water and appropriate temperature and a lack of predatory insects and plants for a starter? Please get a clue.
- overtoke, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2look how brainwashed Me107 is.
stop watching billO - sampath3, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4If it true then what would be the reason behind ?
- cashmonkey, on 06/28/2009, -2/+5Global warming becomes political when it requires government action rocknog. Let the scientists tell us what the problem is and then it's a political process to find how to fix it.
- CaptnIgnit, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3HA! nice try MSNBC! Everyone knows fish don't have ears! Just another made up story to push your liberal agenda against global warming!
/impersonatecolbert - ozydingo, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4@icon
given that "species" is an arbitrary man-made term, could you explain how one can not believe in speciation? Given adaptation, all you need is to accumulate enough of it until taxonomists can agree that there exists a vast enough difference to warrant the naming of two unique species. - swiecki, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3you guys aren't even real.
- KingGorilla, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3Why the ***** would you want to make that point
- overtoke, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2the political process in the united states does not fix things. it only finds ways to ensure that the corporations currently paying to get their way continue to get their way.
- Scruffydan, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2"if anyone says anything bad about carbon dioxide"
They didn't even do that. They just said it makes white sea bass' ears bigger. They don't really know what effects that might have on the fish... yet. - overtoke, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2me107, now you're just lying. did history and common sense cause you to quote $4300?
- ozydingo, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3What anecdotal evidence are you talking about?
- ericthesalmon, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2They did a controlled experiment for exactly that reason. RTFA
- Xwhy, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3I don't think Obama has an evil plan ... I'm not sure that he has any plan at all. Just some ideas about what he wants.
- overtoke, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3We can't even manage to stop cutting them down.
And yes, plants do crave CO2 (they also crave O2) - but they also tend to stop growing when the temperature reaches a certain point (up or down.) - spriggig, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1It's just a guess, but you'd probably need a BS in Biology to "see" the link. I suspect you don't have a BS in Biology.
- ajsmth, on 06/28/2009, -2/+3Can it play Crysis?
