- angryredplanet, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Have you considered that Japanese whalers are "hunting" where they don't belong? They're a long way from home down there in Antarctic/Australian waters.
As most other tactics employed against the Japanese whalers have essentially worked to no avail, this uses a publicly recognised figurehead to reach the Japanese and international public in order to bring disrespect and dishonour to a nation that prides itself on both. Clearly it is working. - angryredplanet, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1It's not whale meat Daryl and everyone else is condemning - it may well be tasty and nutritious. It's the fact that the Japanese whalers are "hunting" in a whale sanctuary under the publicly sponsored guise of scientific research. This "research" involving biopsy has been demonstrated as being possible without killing the animal. What it amounts to is that the Japanese whalers have over-fished their own local waters and now are taking their exploitation to the world, or at least the parts of it they can pay off.
The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is where whales go during their breeding seasons to raise calves in safety from human contact, contact which oftentimes ends them up on Japanese menus via grenade tipped harpoon. The Japanese whalers have continuously been let off the hook by the economically blinded Australian government (areas of the sanctuary fall into official Australian waters), and it makes me ashamed to be one. What makes me proud is the efforts of Sea Shepherd, who have my praise and sponsorship dollars.
As an aside, human is quite tasty too when seasoned and cooked correctly, so, just where do we draw the line using your line of logic? - WordsnCollision, on 11/23/2008, -2/+3Another self-righteous "celebrity expert" sticking her unqualified nose where it doesn't belong.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -4/+3Maybe Daryl Hannah should actually try whale meat before condemning it. My job takes me to both Iceland and to Japan each year and I've enjoyed whale meat on several occasions. It's quite tasty.
