- myempyrean, on 09/30/2008, -1/+37Wrong, the easiest way to get an MP3 that isn't crippled by DRM is off of bittorrent or other illegal means.
- cheezintern, on 09/30/2008, -1/+28***** the RIAA
They're bad for the planet and humanity. - rivalius13, on 09/30/2008, -0/+21DRM also rapes children and kills puppies.
- cheezintern, on 09/30/2008, -0/+18CD's are digital, the music is stored as 1's and 0's optically.
- HarryRag, on 09/30/2008, -1/+17DRM is such unbelievable nonsense. It does absolutely nothing for the music industry OR the game industry. It just annoys legit buyers, who in turn are compelled to download ***** illegally instead.
***** the RIAA up their dumb ***** asses, and while I'm at it, ***** the game industry fat cats who think DRM actually does something to fight piracy. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+15what about something like Spore, where even buying the physical copy limits you?
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 09/30/2008, -0/+15It's true... DRM causes cancer, has been linked to teen suicide, and is responsible for ulcers around the world. DRM also hurts the trees and small furry forest animals. Seriously though, congress should enact legislation to amend the constitution to abolish DRM once and for all, before it causes another world war.
- hankmt, on 09/29/2008, -1/+12Yes...yes you did mean to be picky...
- SelfHomicide, on 09/30/2008, -1/+11The next element to call Captain Planet, DRM.

we are doomed - Jmn187, on 09/30/2008, -0/+10I kind of like amazon for drm free music.
- BOFH139, on 09/30/2008, -0/+9I bought about 200€ worth of DVD in a HMV sale last week and after trying to watch one of then "30 Days of Night" I remembered why I hate DVD's. It have 25mins of trailers that I could not skip or fast forward. FFS
- mykool, on 09/30/2008, -0/+8Okay..you got me.
- oboredone, on 09/30/2008, -1/+8There are none.
- darkism, on 09/30/2008, -1/+8Exactly. Why WOULDN'T you buy a physical copy or download a lossless one, if all they're willing to SELL you is DRM-laced lossy garbage?
- Clbull, on 09/30/2008, -1/+7***** the MPAA
They're bad for the planet and humanity... too - astrotrain, on 09/30/2008, -1/+7They are just bad for everyone and everything...period...
- Shananra, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6So THAT is their master plan, scare everyone away from downloadable music and make them purchase full albums on cds. Well I'll be damned.
- skidooer, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6DRMed music is mute. Their point is moot.
- holyreality, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5no, the easiest way to get mp3s without DRM is to download an album via rapidshare or soulseek.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -1/+6DRM increases stress levels in people.
Increased stress levels mean people drive much more aggressively, lowering fuel economy (source: http://mythbusters-wiki.discovery.com/page/Don%27t ... ). This results in more emissions.
Thus, DRM hurts the planet. - Scrappy1850, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5CDs can have DRM... so buying a CD isnt a fool proof way of avoiding DRM.
- MacParrot, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5NOT THE PUPPIES!
- JonForTheWin, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5"The real problem here is that the easiest way to get an MP3 that isn't crippled by some kind of DRM"
ThePirateBay.org , your argument is invalid, buried as inaccurate. - myempyrean, on 09/30/2008, -2/+7Wrong again, FLAC torrents are just as easy to find, which are both high quality and lossless.
Do a quick google search for Metallica Death Magnetic FLAC... and find your answer.
Don't argue, it's a sad fact but it's true...
PS: Buy the new Metallica album, its awesome and it comes in a cool case. - EasyTigerDon, on 09/30/2008, -1/+6***** Brussel Sprouts
- verifex, on 09/30/2008, -1/+6I wrote a story a couple years ago about the effects of DRM, sadly most of what I wrote is still very true.
Activation schemes are still hindering the ability of media to flow freely through society. And they add nothing to the conversation between the artist (including software) and the person that is experiencing the work of the artist. As I point out in my article, "To build artificial interdependencies between the content existing and the creator existing, requires that both must exist, eternally." I am very sad that some of the harsh DRM systems that inspired me to write the article have now come to fruition and are actually affecting people just as I said they would.
I guess my only wish is that companies involved in the production of new media did not have such a focus on accumulating wealth at any cost.
Here's that story: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2005/8/15/65325/3931 - SonnyW, on 09/30/2008, -1/+6So it's wrong when I download a game, like it and decide to buy? Please inform me of the horrible wrongness behind the way I purchase my games and movies.
- fireashes, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5Users who buy digital media must be allowed to use the media with whichever device they choose
- trdrstv, on 09/30/2008, -2/+7The customer loses their "Right to First Sale" and can't resell it (or loan it) to anyone else.
For a content provider, that's a Pro. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -6/+10I download FLAC torrents. I don't have to worry about DRM.
- illDecree, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4DRM for .ogg would probably be easier to create, being that is an open format.... but, the licensing would prevent it from happening. Good thing they haven't gotten their paws on it yet tho. I do wish someone would have Legal .ogg downloads.... that would be really nice. Maybe Dell, since they seem to support Linux and OSS???
who knows..... its not profitable, so no one is going to touch it.... - regeya, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Amazon sells watermarked MP3s. They work great on any platform which plays MP3s, and sound darn good, too.
- Typhoon2009, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4I try to buy CDs when possible. What I usually do is download an album to see if I like it. If I do, then I put it on my list of CDs to buy... sort of like taking out a loan. I like buying the CDs cause: 1) I like having the physical copy 2) I like being able to rip it in various formats 3) If my hard drive fails, I can just rip the CDs again rather than take ages downloading them since I don't have a rapidshare premium account, nor do I have membership with that music sharing site that came around after Oink.cd died
- astrotrain, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4... and BINGO was his name O!
Yeah Rootkit is like a SBD.... Silent But Deadly... it installs, and takes
over what you can do with the CD on your system. Especially if you use Windows Media Player, who also is Pro-RIAA. - momedefome, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5I know it's bad , but for the planet????? what the ***** are you smoking??????? does it like spoil the land and *****???
- Klink258, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Penny Arcade said it best:
DRM is the fight between the people trying to make money, and the people trying to steal the product. In the end, it hurts the innocent consumers.

And now, ladies and gentleman, sir Elton John. - illDecree, on 09/30/2008, -2/+6one more time
****** THE RIAA*
i feel better
why doesn't everyone put rockbox on their ipod and use ogg???
not so sure RIAA could even find a way to do anything about that one... - Lith25, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4They put DRM on dvds too, but it's still amazingly easy to rip the media off thanks to a few wonderful programmers.
- darkism, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Who needs an excuse?
- astrotrain, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5I wouldn't waste the bandwidth of even downloading an illegal copy for a game that the publisher supports DRM. They can just keep it, legal or illegally.
- astrotrain, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Yeah called RootKit... (thanks to Sony).....nasty bugger. But the good thing is, it will not install itself on a Linux based machine :)
- astrotrain, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Not all of them... ahem.. back in the day... they had a inidcation on how the music was processed. AAD (Analog Source, Analog Mix, and then to Digitla (CD).
There are that are 'DDD' which were recorded on Digital, Mixed on Digital and went to Digital.
Anymore, that whole thing flew out the window, the RIAA does not care how the sound is processed, just as long as they make the money and no one pirates it. - astrotrain, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4A pro to RIAA? Thats like having This Old House install a screen door on a submarine.
Bob: "Norm will be installing this wonderful Sears door on the USS Dallas
to allow fresh air to be distributed to the sailors."
Norm: "Bob, this is not a good idea **water rushing up** glub..glub..glubb" - BXRWXR, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4Enough DRM cons, what are the pros?
- sLydE, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3@myempyrean
Lars, is that you? - TaintBrush, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3I think this reasoning is a stretch, but I hate DRM so I'm digging it.
- MacParrot, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3illDecree
Just because no one has created DRM for oog doesn't make it impossible. Few people use it, no one has legal downloads for it, so no one has bothered. - darkism, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Or you can download FLAC for free, re-encode it to whatever format/bitrate you like AND have the benefit of no watermarks...
- MacParrot, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3And beets too!
- asnider, on 09/30/2008, -1/+3Wow, that's *****. I've never had the bad luck of purchasing a DVD where I couldn't skip past the trailers. I've rented a few like that, but never had the misfortune of buying one. I guess I've just been lucky.
