- ancalagon73, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3I'm guessing you don't live in Florida. It's nice to know if I can ride out the storm or if I should get the hell out of Dodge.
- mlc1138, on 04/10/2009, -2/+5Inconceivable. Only Al Gore can predict the intensity of hurricanes.
- chrisduser, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Angry Protective Polar Bear Mother == Cat5?
- Nev9, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1No, but my parents live in Texas and we had to evacuate from Hurricane Ike
- offrdbandit, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1It's an interesting idea to say the least.
Hurricanes do not produce much lightning, and I think that could be a problem with their method (keeping sample sizes relatively small). Perhaps they could find some correlation between changes in lighting frequency and changes in intensity (rather than a correlation between lightning frequency itself and intensity), but "intensity" of a storm is so ephemeral I think nailing it down would be difficult. - 10pins, on 04/10/2009, -1/+2I'm no meteorologist, but I do believe it is raining bitches up in here.

Except that we don't do that, at least not when trying to get people to evacuate. The warnings for Ike pointed not to the winds, but to the predicted high storm surges (made worse by the wide size of the storm). - gkiltz, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1Where we are missing the boat on Hurricanes is that we use ONLY wind speed as a measure of intensity!
We need to get more sophisticated!
We need to take into account the amount of rain, the propensity to spawn tornadoes, the number of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, and the amount of area the storm covers. All of these things contribute to it's danger.
It is really disingenuous to stick to the present system now that we have the knowledge base to do better! - mine4321, on 04/10/2009, -1/+0I thought hurricane intensity was directly related to the number of pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays and lesbians, and the ACLU in this country.
- semengilligan, on 04/10/2009, -3/+1Wind speed would be good
- RonADiSH, on 04/10/2009, -7/+3Israel isnt really known for hurricanes, but im sure they know what they are talking about
- Nev9, on 04/10/2009, -6/+1Who cares if a Hurricane is going to hit, it's going to hit.
- Robosol, on 04/10/2009, -5/+0Some of these science articles are dumb, too dumb. They can all be summarized as though they are two paragraph essays written by freshmen in highschool with little enough evidence you can kind of see where the title makes sense but at the same time the best conclusion they can give you is a very vague "might" in the end because the entire article seems to only exists just to get attention simply to get a hit for the website.
- ChileanGoD, on 04/10/2009, -7/+1No
- cmost, on 04/10/2009, -10/+0Did you know there was a correlation between eating ice cream and death by drowning? Statistics can be used to correlate anything. While this might be true, I would take it at face value.
